देवीनामविकाराणि इत्येतानि यथाक्रमम्। भद्रकाल्यास्तवोक्तानि देव्या नामानि तत्त्वतः
These, in order, are the unchanging names of the Goddess, as declared in the hymn to Bhadrakālī, the true names of the Goddess.
ये पठन्ति नरास्तेषां विद्यते न पराभवः। अरण्ये प्रान्तरे वापि पुरे वापि गृहेऽपि वा
Those men who recite these have no defeat, whether in the forest, at the edge of the wilderness, in the city, or even at home.
रक्षामेतां प्रयुञ्जीत जले वापि स्थलेऽपि वा। व्याध्रकुम्भीरचौरेभ्यो भूतस्थाने विशेषतः। आधिष्वपि च सर्वासु देव्या नामानि कीर्त्तयेत्
One should apply this protection in water or on land, especially against tigers, crocodiles, thieves, and in haunted places; in all afflictions, one should recite the names of the Goddess.
अर्भकग्रहभूतैश्च पूतनामातृभिः सदा। अभ्यर्दितानां बालानां रक्षामेतां प्रयोजयेत्
For children afflicted by spirits, demons, or the mothers Pūtanā and others, one should always employ this protection.
महादेवी कुले द्वे तु प्रज्ञा श्रीश्च प्रकीर्त्त्यते। आभ्यां देवीसहस्राणि यैर्व्याप्तमखिलं जगत् ॥१.९.
In the lineage of the Great Goddess, two are renowned: Wisdom and Prosperity; by these, thousands of goddesses pervade the entire world.
साऽसृजद् व्यवसायन्तु धर्मं भूतसुखावहम्। सङ्कल्पञ्चैव कल्पादौ जज्ञिरेऽव्यक्तयोनितः
She created resolve and dharma, which brings happiness to beings; and at the beginning of the kalpa, intention was born from the Unmanifest Source.
मानसश्च रुचिर्न्नाम विज्ञेयो ब्रह्मणः सुतः। प्राणात् स्वादसृजद्दक्षञ्चक्षुर्भ्याञ्च मरीचिकम्
And the mind-born son named Ruci is to be known as the son of Brahmā; from breath he created Dakṣa, and from the eyes, Marīci.
भृगुस्तु हृदयाज्जज्ञे ऋषिः सलिलजन्मनः। शिरसोऽङ्गिरसञ्चैव श्रोत्रादत्रिन्तथैव च
Bhṛgu, the sage born of water, was born from the heart; from the head, Aṅgiras, and from the ears, Atri likewise.
पुलस्त्यञ्च तथोदानाद्य्वानाच्च पुलहं पुनः। समानजं वसिष्ठन्तु अपानान्निर्ममे क्रतुम्
Pulastya was born from the outgoing breath, and from the vital wind, Pulaha again; Vasiṣṭha was born from the equalizing breath, and from the downward breath, Kratu.
अभिमानात्मकं भद्रं निर्ममे नीललोहितम्। इत्येते ब्रह्मणः पुत्राः प्राणजा द्वादश स्मृताः
He created Bhadra, of the nature of ego, and Nīlalohita; thus these twelve, born of breath, are remembered as the sons of Brahmā.
इत्येते मानसाः पुत्रा विज्ञेया ब्रह्मणः सुताः। भृग्वादयस्तु ये सृष्टा ना चैते ब्रह्मवादिनः
Thus these mind-born sons are to be known as the children of Brahmā; but those beginning with Bhṛgu, though created, are not expounders of Brahman.
गृहमेधिनः पुराणास्ते धर्मस्तैः प्राक् प्रवार्त्तितः। द्वादशैते प्रवर्त्तन्ते सह रुद्रेण वैप्रजाः
Those ancient householders established dharma in former times; these twelve, along with Rudra, are the progenitors.
ऋभुः सनत्कुमारस्तु द्वावेतावूर्द्ध्वरेतसौ। पूर्वोत्पन्नौ पुरा तेभ्यः सर्वेषामपि पूर्वजौ
Ṛbhu and Sanatkumāra—these two are of upward-flowing seed; born before the others, they are the eldest of all.
व्यतीते प्रथमे कल्पे पुराणे लोकसाधकौ। वैराजे तावुभौ लोके तेजः संक्षिप्य चास्थितौ
In the first ancient kalpa that has passed, those two, who accomplished the worlds, remained in the realm of Virāj, having withdrawn their brilliance.
तावुभौ योगधर्माणावारोप्यात्मानमात्मनि। प्रजाधर्मञ्च कामञ्च वर्त्तयेतां महौजसा ॥१.९.
Having established themselves in the two paths of yoga and dharma, they sustain progeny and desire with great energy.
यथोत्पन्नस्तथैवेह कुमार इति चोच्यते। तस्मात्सनत्कुमारोयमिति नामास्य कीर्तितम्
Just as he was born, he is called Kumāra here; therefore, his name is renowned as Sanatkumāra.
तेषां द्वादश ते वंशा दिव्या देवगुणान्विताः। क्रियावन्तः प्रजावन्तो महर्षिभिरलंकृताः
Among them, twelve lineages are divine, endowed with the qualities of the gods, active in deeds and progeny, adorned by great sages.
इत्येष करणोद्भूतो लोकान् स्रष्टुं स्वयंभुवः। महदादिविशेषान्तो विकारः प्रकृतेः स्वयम्
Thus, this transformation arising from the instrument, from the great to the particular, is the modification of Prakṛti for the creation of worlds by the self-born.
चन्द्रसूर्यप्रभालोको ग्रहनक्षत्रमण्डितः। नदीभिश्च समुद्रैश्च पर्वतैश्च समावृतः
Illuminated by the radiance of the moon and sun, adorned with planets and stars, surrounded by rivers, oceans, and mountains.
पुरैश्च विविधाकारैः प्रीतैर्ज्जनपदैस्तथा। तस्मिन् ब्रह्मवनेऽव्यक्ते ब्रह्मा चरति शर्वरीम्
Also encircled by cities of various forms and joyful peoples; in that unmanifest Brahma forest, Brahmā wanders through the night.
अव्यक्तबीजप्रभवस्तस्यैवानुग्रहोत्थितः। बुद्धिस्कन्धमयश्चैव इन्द्रियाङ्कुरकोटरः
Originating from the seed of the unmanifest, arising by its grace, composed of the aggregate of intellect, with the cavity of the sprouting senses.
महाभूतप्रशाखश्च विशेषैः पत्रवांस्तथा। धर्माधर्मसुपुष्पस्तु सुखदुःखफलोदयः
With branches of the great elements, bearing leaves of particulars, flourishing with the blossoms of dharma and adharma, yielding the fruits of pleasure and pain.
आजीवः सर्वभूतानामयं वृक्षः सनातनः। एतद्ब्रह्मबलं चैव ब्रह्मवृक्षस्य तस्य ह
This eternal tree is the livelihood of all beings; this is the power of Brahma, the strength of that Brahma tree.
अव्यक्तं कारणं यत्तन्नित्यं सदसदात्मकम्। इत्येषोऽनुग्रहः सर्गो ब्रह्मणः प्राकृतस्तु यः
The unmanifest cause, which is eternal and of the nature of both existence and non-existence; thus, this is the creation arising from grace, the primordial creation of Brahma.
मुख्यादयस्तु षट्सर्गा वैकृता बुद्धिपूर्वकाः। त्रैकाले समवर्तन्त ब्रह्मणस्तेऽभिमानिनः ॥१.९.
The principal and other six creations are modifications preceded by intellect; they occur in three times, belonging to those who identify with Brahma.
सर्गाः परस्परस्याथ कारणं ते बुधैः स्मृताः। दिव्यौ सुपर्णौ सयुजौ सशाखौ पटविद्रुमौ
The creations are mutually causes of each other, so the wise declare; the two divine birds, united, with branches, are the silk-cotton and coral trees.
द्यौर्मूर्द्धानं यस्य विप्रास्तुवन्ति खन्नाभिं वै चन्द्रसूर्यौ च नेत्रे। दिशः श्रोत्रे चरणौ चास्य भूमिः सोऽचिन्त्यात्मा सर्वभूत प्रसूतिः
He whose head is the sky, whom the Brahmins praise, whose navel is space, whose eyes are the moon and sun, whose ears are the directions, whose feet are the earth—he is the inconceivable self, the origin of all beings.
वक्राद्यस्य ब्राह्मणाः संप्रसूता यद्वक्षस्तः क्षत्रियाः पूर्वभागे। वैश्याश्वोरोर्यस्य पद्भयां च शूद्राः सर्वे वर्णा गात्रतः संप्रसूताः
From whose mouth the Brahmins are born, from whose chest the Kṣatriyas in the eastern part, from whose thighs the Vaiśyas, and from whose feet the Śūdras—all castes are born from his body.
महेश्वरः परोऽव्यक्तादण्डमव्यक्तसंभवम्। अण्डाज्जज्ञे पुनर्ब्रह्मा येन लोकाः कृतास्त्विमे
The great lord, beyond the unmanifest, the egg born from the unmanifest; from the egg, Brahmā was again born, by whom these worlds were created.
एवंभूतेषु लोकेषु ब्रह्मणा लोककर्तृणा। यदा ता न प्रवर्त्तन्ते प्रजाः केनापि हेतुना ।। १०.
When, in such worlds, Brahmā, the creator of worlds, does not set the creatures in motion for some reason—
