स तु गर्भाद्विनिःसृत्य मातुर्वै उदरात्तदा। उपक्लृप्तासनं यत्तु होतुरर्थे हिरण्मयम्। निषसाद सगर्भोऽत्र तत्रासीनः शशंस च ।। ६.
Then, emerging from his mother's womb, he sat upon the golden seat prepared for the Hotṛ priest, still in the womb, and there, seated, he spoke.
आक्यानपञ्चमान् वेदान् महर्षिः काश्यपो यथा। तं दृष्ट्वा मुनयस्तस्य नामाकुर्वंस्तु तद्विधम् ।। ६.
The great sage Kasyapa, as in the five narrations of the Vedas, was seen by the sages, who then named him accordingly.
हिरण्यकशिपुस्तस्मात् कर्मणा तेन विश्रुतः। हिरण्याक्षोऽनुजस्तस्य सिंहिका तस्य चानुजा। राहोः सा जननी देवी विप्रचित्तेः परिग्रहात् ।। ६.
Thus, Hiranyakashipu became renowned for that act; his younger brother was Hiranyaksha, and Simhika was their sister; she became the mother of Rahu, having been taken by Vipracitti.
हिरण्यकशिपुर्द्दैत्यश्चचार परमं तपः। शतं वर्षसहस्राणां निराहारो ह्यधःशिराः ।। ६.
Hiranyakashipu, the Daitya, performed severe austerities for a hundred thousand years, fasting and standing with his head downward.
तं ब्रह्मा छन्दयामास दैत्यं तुष्टो वरेण तु। सर्वामरत्वं विप्रेभ्यः सर्वभूतेभ्य एव च। योगाद्देवान् विनिर्जित्य सर्वदेवत्वमास्थितः ।। ६.
Brahma, pleased, granted the Daitya a boon; he received immortality among Brahmins and all beings, and, through yoga, having conquered the gods, he assumed supremacy over all deities.
दानवाश्चासुराश्चैव देवाः समा भवन्तु वै। मारुतेर्यन्महैश्वर्यमेष मे दीयतां वरः ।। ६.
Let the Danavas, Asuras, and Devas be equal; grant me, as a boon, the great power of the wind-god.
एवमुक्तोऽथ ब्रह्मा तु तस्मै दत्त्वा यथेप्सितम्। दत्त्वा तस्मै वरान् दिव्यान् तत्रैवान्तरधीयत। हिरण्यकशिपुर्दैत्यः श्लोकैर्गीतः पुरातनैः ।। ६.
Thus addressed, Brahma granted him his desired boons, gave him divine gifts, and vanished there; Hiranyakashipu, the Daitya, was celebrated in ancient verses.
राजा हिरण्यकशिपुर्यां यामाशां निषेवते। तस्यास्तस्या दिशो देवा नमश्चक्रुर्महर्षिभिः ।। ६.
Wherever King Hiranyakashipu resides, the gods of that region, along with the great sages, offer him their salutations.
एवंप्रभावो दैत्येन्द्रो हिरण्यकशिपु र्द्विजाः। तस्यासीन्नरसिंहः स विष्णुर्मृत्युः पुरा किल। नखैस्तु तेन निर्भिन्नस्ततः शुद्धा नखाः स्मृताः ।। ६.
Such was the power of the lord of the Daityas, Hiranyakashipu, O twice-born. Long ago, Narasimha, who was Vishnu and death for him, arose. By his claws was he torn apart; therefore, claws are regarded as pure.
हिरण्याक्षसुताः पञ्च विक्रान्ताः सुमहा बलाः। उत्कुरः शकुनिश्चैव कालनाभस्तथैव च ।। ६.
Hiranyaksha had five sons, mighty and valiant: Utkura, Shakuni, and Kalanabha as well.
महानाभश्च विक्रान्तो भूतसन्तापनस्तथा। हिरण्याक्षसुताः ह्येते देवैरपि दुरासदाः ।। ६.
And there were Mahanabha, powerful, and Bhutasantapana too; these were the sons of Hiranyaksha, formidable even for the gods.
तेषां पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च बाडेयः सगणः स्मृतः। शतन्तानि सहस्राणि निहतास्तारकामये ।। ६.
Their sons and grandsons, known as the Badeya clan, along with their followers—hundreds of thousands—were slain in the Tarakamaya war.
हिरण्यकशिपोः पुत्राश्चत्वारस्तु महाबलाः। प्रह्लादः पूर्वजस्तेषामनुह्लादस्तथैव च। संह्रादश्च ह्रदश्चैव ह्रदपुत्रान्निबोधत ।। ६.
Hiranyakashipu had four mighty sons: Prahlada, the eldest among them, and Anuhlada as well; also Samhrada and Hrada. Now hear of Hrada's sons.
ह्रादो निसुन्दश्च तता ह्रदपुत्रौ बभूवतुः। सुन्दोपसुन्दौ विक्रान्तौ निसुन्दतन यावुभौ ।। ६.
Hrada had two sons: Hrada and Nisunda. Sundā and Upasunda, both valiant, were the sons of Nisunda.
ब्रह्मघ्नस्तु महावीर्यो मूकस्तु ह्रददायिनः। मारीचः सुन्दपुत्रस्तु ताडकामुपपद्यते ।। ६.
Brahmaghna, of great might, and Muka were the sons of Hrada; Maricha, son of Sunda, was born to Tadaka.
ताडका निहता साऽथ राघवेण बलीयसा। मूको विनिहतश्चापि किराते सव्यसाचिना ।। ६.
That Tadaka was slain by the mighty Raghava; and Muka too was killed by the archer among the Kiratas.
उत्पन्ना महता चैव तपसा भाविताः स्वयम्। तिस्रः कोट्यस्तु तेषां वै मणिवर्त्तनिवासिनाम्। अवध्या देवतानां वै निहताः सव्यसाचिना ।। ६.
Born through great austerity and self-discipline, there were thirty million of those dwelling at Manivarta; though invulnerable to the gods, they were slain by the left-handed archer.
अनुह्लादसुतो वायुः शिनीवाली तथैव च । तेषान्तु शतसाहस्रो गणो हालाहलः स्मृतः ।। ६.
Anuhlada's son was Vayu, and also Shinivali. Their host, numbering a hundred thousand, is known as Halahala.
वैरोचनस्तु प्राह्लादिः पञ्च तस्यात्मजाः स्मृताः। गवेष्ठी कालनेमिश्च जम्भो बाष्कल एव च। शम्भुस्तु अनुजस्तेषां स्मृताः प्राह्लादिसूनवः ।। ६.
Virochana was the son of Prahlada; he had five sons: Gaveshthi, Kalanemi, Jambha, Bashkala, and Shambhu, who was the youngest. These are remembered as the sons of Prahlada's line.
यथाप्रधानं वक्ष्यामि तेषां पुत्रान् दुरासदान्। शुम्भश्चैव निशुम्भश्च विष्वक्सेनो महौजसः ।। ६.
I will now recount, in order, their sons, who were formidable: Shumbha, Nishumbha, and Vishvaksena of great energy.
गवेष्ठिनः सुता ह्येते जम्भस्य शतदुन्दुभिः। तथा दक्षश्च खण्डश्च त्रयस्तु जम्भसूनवः ।। ६.
These were the sons of Gaveshthi; Jambha's sons were Shatadundubhi, Daksha, and Khanda—three sons of Jambha.
विरोधश्च मनुश्चैव वृक्षायुः कुशलीमुखः। बाष्कलस्य सुता ह्येते कालनेमिसुतान् श्रृणु ।। ६.
Virodha, Manu, Vriksayu, and Kushalimukha—these were the sons of Bashkala. Now hear of the sons of Kalanemi.
ब्रह्मजित् क्षत्रजिच्चैव देवान्तकनरान्तकौ । कालनेमिसुता ह्येते शम्भोस्तु श्रृणुत प्रजाः ।। ६.
Brahmajit and Kshatrajit, as well as Devantaka and Narantaka—these were the sons of Kalanemi. Now hear of the offspring of Shambhu.
धनुको ह्यसिलोमा च नाबलश्च सगोमुखः। गवाक्षश्चैव गोमांश्च शम्भोः पुत्राः प्रकीर्त्तिताः ।। ६.
Dhanuka, Asiloma, Nabala, and Sagomukha, as well as Gavaksha and Gomans—these are named as the sons of Shambhu.
विरोचनस्य पुत्रस्तु बलिरेकः प्रतापवान्। बलेः पुत्रशतं जज्ञे राजानः सर्व एव ते ।। ६.
Virochana's son was Bali, renowned for his might. Bali had a hundred sons, all of whom were kings.
तेषां प्रधानाश्चत्वारो विक्रान्ताः सुमहाबलाः। सहस्रबाहुर्ज्येष्ठस्तु बाणो द्रविणसम्मतः। कुम्भनाभो गर्द्दभाक्षः कुशिरित्येवमादयः ।। ६.
Among them, four were foremost, valiant and exceedingly strong: Sahasrabahu, the eldest, Bana, esteemed by the Dravidas, Kumbhanabha, Gardabhaksha, and Kushi—these were the principal ones.
शकुनी पूतना चैव कन्ये द्वे तु बलेः सुते। बलेः पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।। ६.
Śakunī and Pūtanā, the two daughters of Bali, and the sons and grandsons of Bali, were born by the hundreds and thousands.
बलिर्यो नामविख्यातो गणो विक्रान्तपौरुषः। बाणस्य चन्द्र मनसो लौहित्यमुपपद्यते ।। ६.
Bali, renowned by name, was a host of great valor and strength; from Bāṇa, Candra, and Manas, the lineage of Lauhitya arises.
दितिर्विनष्टपुत्रा वै तोषयामास कश्यपम्। स कश्यपः प्रसन्नात्मा सम्यगाराधितस्तया । वरेण च्छन्दयामास सा च वव्रे वरं ततः ।। ६.
Diti, having lost her sons, sought to please Kaśyapa; Kaśyapa, his mind appeased and properly honored by her, offered her a boon, and she then chose her desired blessing.
स तु तस्यै वरं प्रादात् प्रार्थितं भगवन् प्रभुः। किमिच्छसि मयि शुभ्रे मारीचस्तामभाषत ।। ६.
To her, the blessed and mighty Lord granted the boon she requested, saying, 'What do you desire from me, O pure one?' Thus spoke Mārīca.
