But when those beings are conceived by mind alone, each is born once, pure in the objects of sense such as sound, each possessing five characteristics.
Thus, in the beginning, the creation of Prajāpati was by mind; from his lineage arose those by whom this world is filled.
Rivers, lakes, oceans, and even mountains are attended; at that time, neither excessive cold nor heat prevails, and beings move freely in that age.
The creatures then consume food arising from the earth; they act according to their desires, established in mental accomplishment.
Righteousness and unrighteousness do not exist among them; those beings are undifferentiated, possessing equal lifespan, happiness, and form in that Krita age.
Righteousness and unrighteousness do not exist among them at the beginning of the cycle, in the Krita age; each is born in the Krita age according to their own domain.
They declare the first Krita age to be four thousand years by divine reckoning, and four hundred years as its twilight periods.
Then, even among those widely renowned beings numbering in thousands, there is no opposition, no conflict, nor any sequence.
Those beings dwell among mountains and oceans, without fixed abodes; free from sorrow, abundant in purity, they are entirely happy.
Indeed, they act as they wish, their minds always joyful; at that time, there were neither animals nor birds, nor reptiles.
There were neither those born from eggs nor those of hellish origin, who arise from unrighteousness; neither roots, fruits, nor flowers, nor seasons existed.
The time was filled with all desired pleasures, neither excessively hot nor cold; their wishes, conceived in mind, were fulfilled everywhere and always.
Substances arising from the earth, meditated upon by them, rise up; that accomplishment, which gives strength and color, destroys disease for them.
With bodies not requiring purification, those beings possess enduring youth; from their pure intentions, offspring are born in pairs.
Birth and form are equal, and they die equally; then truth, absence of greed, patience, satisfaction, happiness, and self-control prevail.
All are made undifferentiated in form, lifespan, character, and actions; conduct arises spontaneously among the beings, without deliberation.
In the Krita age, there is no engagement in actions, whether auspicious or inauspicious; the system of castes and stages of life exists, but there is no intermingling.
They interact with each other, endowed with neither desire nor aversion; all are equal in form and lifespan, without distinction of inferior or superior.
Mostly happy and free from sorrow, they are born in the Krita age; their minds are always delighted, possessing great purity and strength.
Gain and loss do not exist, nor friend and foe, nor beloved and unlovable; for those without desire, sense objects arise only in the mind; they neither covet nor support one another.
Meditation is supreme in the Krita age; knowledge is declared in Treta; ritual sacrifice is practiced in Dvapara; charity is best in Kali.
Sattva prevails in Krita, rajas in Treta, and in Dvapara both rajas and tamas; in Kali, tamas alone is to be understood, according to the nature of the ages.
Now, in the Krita age, time is as follows: listen to its reckoning—four thousand years constitute the Krita age.
Its twilight portions are eight hundred divine years in number; then, during those times, Vayu existed, and there was no suffering or calamity.
After the twilight portion of the Krita age has passed, only one quarter remains of the age's virtue, and all its qualities.
When the twilight has ended, at the close of the age, only a quarter of the twilight's virtue remains; thus, in Krita, perfection entirely disappears at that time.
When that perfection is lost, another perfection arises in the Treta age, in place of the mental perfection.
At the beginning of creation, eight mental perfections were proclaimed by me; those eight, in order, diminish gradually.
At the start of a cycle, this mental perfection exists in Krita; in all manvantaras, divided by the four ages, perfection arises from actions performed according to caste and stage of life.
By a portion of the twilight of Krita, and by a portion of its twilight, these three quarters of the twilight of Krita diminish, along with the virtues of the ages—asceticism, scriptural strength, and longevity.
