With the right side as his heart, a yogi, composed of the great sacrifice, all-pervading, resplendent in the preliminary rites, adorned with the wealth of the Pravargya ceremony.
With various meters as his paths, seated upon the secret Upanishads, accompanied by his shadow-wife, exalted like a jeweled horn—thus did the Lord, having become the sacrificial boar, enter the waters.
The Lord of creatures, having approached, swiftly lifted up the earth, which was covered by the waters, and set those waters aside.
The oceanic rivers in the seas, and the bestowing rivers on the land, which had sunk to the bottom of the netherworld—he, the Lord, for the welfare of the worlds, raised up the earth with his tusk.
Then, having brought the earth to its proper place, the supporter of the earth released her, after first holding her in his mind.
Upon that mass of water, she stood like a great ship; and because of the Lord's action, the earth does not sink.
Then, having raised the earth, the Lord, wishing to establish the world, conceived in his mind the division of the earth; and having arranged the earth, he placed the mountains upon her.
Previously, all the mountains had been burned by the fire of dissolution; by that fire, the mountains were shattered everywhere on earth.
Because of the cold, the waters were gathered in the single ocean by the wind; wherever they were deposited, there a mountain arose.
Because they became fixed and unmoving, they are called 'acala' (immovable); and because they are heaped up with peaks, they are known as mountains; and since some were swallowed within, they are called heaps of rocks.
Then, when those worlds, oceans, and mountains were shattered, Viśvakarman divides them again and again at the beginning of each cycle.
He arranged this earth with its oceans, seven continents, and mountains, as well as the four worlds beginning with Bhū; and after establishing the worlds, he created the generations of beings.
Brahmā, the self-born, the blessed one, desiring to create various beings, produced a creation of that very form, just as in previous cycles.
As he contemplated creation at that time, a creation arose, born of intention, simultaneously with primordial matter, and consisting of darkness.
Darkness, delusion, great delusion, Tamas, and what is called Andha—this fivefold ignorance arose from the great soul.
This creation, fivefold, arose from the one meditating, who was full of self-conceit; everywhere enveloped by darkness, like a lamp covered by a pot, pure and without awareness, shining within and without.
Because by these, intellect and the chief senses were covered, therefore those with covered selves are called the chief trees.
Seeing that the primary creation was thus ineffective, Brahmā was displeased in mind, and then considered renunciation.
As he contemplated, there arose there a stream flowing sideways; because it turned aside, it is called the sideways-flowing stream.
Because of the abundance of darkness, all of them are said to be full of ignorance; they are led astray, and, though meditating, are proud of their meditation.
Seeing the sideways-flowing stream, the Lord created a second world, consisting of self-assertion and self-regard, made up of twenty-eight kinds.
There are eleven kinds of senses, nine kinds of urges, and eight, beginning with the stars; their powers are said to be of these kinds.
Therefore, all these are luminous, yet again covered on the outside; because they move sideways, they are called the sideways-flowing beings.
Seeing the sideways-flowing beings, the Lord created a second world; perceiving the intention that had arisen, and seeing all as thus named, as he contemplated, a sattvic creation arose.
The third is the upward-flowing stream, which is established above; because it moves upward, it is called the upward-flowing stream.
They are full of happiness and delight, covered both within and without; luminous within and without, they are said to arise from the upward-flowing stream.
By this, those beings whose nature is established should be known; the upward-flowing stream is the third, and that creation is so called.
When the upward-flowing beings, the gods, were created, then Brahmā, full of joy, desired another; the Lord created another creation, one that is effective.
Then, as he contemplated, being truthful in his meditation, there appeared from the unmanifest a downward-flowing stream, well-suited for creation; since it moves downward, it is called the downward current.
These are abundant in light, dominated by darkness, sattva, and rajas; therefore, they are mostly sources of suffering and repeatedly active.
