Waters indeed arose from fire when fire was lost from the surface of the earth; when all that is stationary and moving was destroyed in the interval of dissolution.
Then, in that one ocean, nothing at all could be perceived; at that time, the blessed Brahma, thousand-eyed and thousand-footed—
The thousand-headed Purusha, golden in hue, beyond the senses, Brahma known as Narayana, then slept upon the waters.
Awakened by the predominance of sattva, he beheld the world as void; and here they recite this verse about Narayana.
The waters are indeed called 'nara,' and thus we have heard the name of the waters; because he lies in the waters, therefore he is remembered as Narayana.
Having passed a night equal to a thousand yugas in meditation, at the end of the night, he assumes the state of Brahma for the purpose of creation.
Then Brahma, in those waters, moved about as Vayu, like a firefly in the night, here and there during the rainy season.
Then, in those waters, perceiving the earth submerged within, he, not deluded, inferred the means for the earth's raising.
He then assumed another form, as in previous kalpas, and the great-souled one conceived in his mind a divine form.
Seeing the earth completely submerged in water, he thought, 'By assuming what great form might I raise the earth?'
He remembered the delightful boar form, pleasing in water-sports, invincible to all beings, composed of speech, and known as Dharma.
Ten yojanas wide, a hundred yojanas tall, resembling a dark cloud, with a roar like thunder.
Of vast mountain-like form, white, with sharp and terrible fangs, eyes shining like lightning and fire, possessing the brilliance of the sun—
With thick, rounded, and broad shoulders, moving with the stride of a lion, with a robust and prominent waist, smooth and bearing auspicious marks—
Assuming this immense and boundless boar form, Hari entered the netherworld for the purpose of raising up the earth.
He was the overseer of Vedic chants, the embodiment of sacrificial rites, with a mouth like the altar, tongue of fire, hair of sacred grass, head of Brahma, and of great austerity.
Bearing the eyes of day and night, adorned with the limbs of the Vedas and sacred sounds, with ghee for his nose, the sacrificial ladle for his snout, and a mighty voice like the chant of the Sāma Veda.
He was composed of truth and righteousness, glorious, established in the power of dharma, devoted to expiation, formidable, compassionate to animals, and of great form.
With limbs raised upward, marked by the signs of sacrifice, the seed of stability, the great herb, the inner soul of the altar, with mantras as his haunches, touching ghee, and with soma and blood.
His shoulders were the Vedas, his fragrance that of offerings, surpassing in speed both oblations to gods and ancestors, his body facing east, radiant, endowed with various initiations.
With the right side as his heart, a yogi, composed of the great sacrifice, all-pervading, resplendent in the preliminary rites, adorned with the wealth of the Pravargya ceremony.
With various meters as his paths, seated upon the secret Upanishads, accompanied by his shadow-wife, exalted like a jeweled horn—thus did the Lord, having become the sacrificial boar, enter the waters.
The Lord of creatures, having approached, swiftly lifted up the earth, which was covered by the waters, and set those waters aside.
The oceanic rivers in the seas, and the bestowing rivers on the land, which had sunk to the bottom of the netherworld—he, the Lord, for the welfare of the worlds, raised up the earth with his tusk.
Then, having brought the earth to its proper place, the supporter of the earth released her, after first holding her in his mind.
Upon that mass of water, she stood like a great ship; and because of the Lord's action, the earth does not sink.
Then, having raised the earth, the Lord, wishing to establish the world, conceived in his mind the division of the earth; and having arranged the earth, he placed the mountains upon her.
Previously, all the mountains had been burned by the fire of dissolution; by that fire, the mountains were shattered everywhere on earth.

Because they became fixed and unmoving, they are called 'acala' (immovable); and because they are heaped up with peaks, they are known as mountains; and since some were swallowed within, they are called heaps of rocks.
