दारा ग्रिहोत्रसंयोगे मिथ्यामारभतेति च। एवमुक्त्वा तु तं व्रह्मा तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ।। ६.
In the union of wife and household sacrifice, he began wrongly; having said this, Brahma disappeared right there.
ततस्ते नाभ्यनन्दन्त तद्वाक्यं परमेष्ठिनः। सत्यस्येह तु कर्माणि वाङ्मनः कर्मजानि तु ।। ६.
Then they did not welcome the words of the Supreme Lord; here, the actions of truth are those born of speech, mind, and action.
य एवाप्यवतिष्ठन्ते दोषं दृष्ट्वा तु कर्मसु। क्षयातिशययुक्तन्तु ते दृष्ट्वा कर्मणां फलम् ।। ६.
Those who remain, seeing fault in actions, seeing the result of actions as mixed with decrease and excess.
जुगुप्सन्तः प्रसूतिञ्च निस्तन्द्रा निर्ममाभवन्। अजस्रं कांक्षमाणास्ते विरक्ता दोषदर्शिनः ।। ६.
Despising birth, they became tireless and free from possessiveness; always desiring, they became detached, seeing faults.
अर्थं धर्मञ्च कामञ्च हित्वा ते वै व्यवस्थिताः। पौरुषं ज्ञानमास्थाय तेजः संक्षिप्य चास्थिताः ।। ६.
Having abandoned wealth, righteousness, and desire, they remained steadfast, relying on their own strength and knowledge, restraining their energy.
तेषाञ्च तमभिप्रायं ज्ञात्वा ब्रह्मा चुकोप ह। तानब्रवीत्तदा ब्रह्मा निरुत्साहात् सुरानथ ।। ६.
Knowing their intention, Brahmā became angry; then, without enthusiasm, Brahmā spoke to those gods.
प्रजार्थमिह यूयं वै प्रजास्रष्टाऽस्मि नान्यथा। प्रसूयध्वं जयघ्वञ्चेत्युक्तवानस्मि यत् पुरा ।। ६.
For the sake of creation, you are here; I am the creator of beings, not otherwise. I had previously told you: 'Procreate and conquer.'
यस्माद्वाक्यमनादृत्य मम वैराग्यमास्थिताः। जुगुप्समानाः स्वं जन्म सन्ततिं नाभि नन्दथ ।। ६.
Because, disregarding my words, you have embraced detachment, despising your own birth, you did not rejoice in your progeny.
कर्मणाञ्च कृतो न्यासो ह्यमृतत्त्वाभिकांक्षया। तस्माद्यूयमनादृत्य सप्तकृत्वस्तु यास्यथ ।। ६.
And having renounced action out of desire for immortality, therefore, disregarding me, you shall depart seven times.
ते शप्ता ब्रह्मणा देवा जयास्तं वै प्रसादयन्। क्षमास्माकं महादेव यदज्ञानात् कृतं विभो ।। ६.
Cursed by Brahmā, the gods sought to appease Jayā, saying, 'Forgive us, great lord, for what was done out of ignorance.'
प्रणिपत्य सानुनयं ब्रह्मा तानब्रवीत् पुनः। लोके मयाननुज्ञातः कः स्वातन्त्र्यमिहार्हसि ।। ६.
Having bowed with humility, Brahmā again spoke to them: 'In this world, who deserves independence without my permission?'
मया परिगतं सर्वं कथमच्छन्दतो मम। प्रतिपत्स्यन्ति भूतानि शुभं वा यदि वाऽशुभम् ।। ६.
Since everything has been encompassed by me, how will beings act according to their own will, whether for good or for ill?
लोके यदस्ति किञ्चिद्वै सत्त्वासत्त्वव्यवस्थितम्। बुद्ध्यात्मना मया व्याप्तं को मां लोकेऽतिसन्धयेत् ।। ६.
Whatever exists in the world, whether with essence or without, is pervaded by me through intellect and self; who in the world can surpass me?
भूतानां तर्कितं यच्च यच्चाप्येषां विधारितम्। तथा विचारितं यच्च तत्सर्वं विदितं मम ।। ६.
Whatever is reasoned by beings, and whatever is ordained for them, and whatever is considered— all that is known to me.
मया स्थितमिदं सर्वं जगत् स्थावरजङ्गमम्। आशामयेन तत्त्वेन कथं छेत्तुमिहोत्सहे ।। ६.
This entire world, both moving and unmoving, is established by me in its true nature; how could I wish to destroy it?
यस्माच्चाहं विवृत्तो वै सर्गार्थमिह नान्यथा। इह कर्माण्यनारभ्य को मे छन्दाद्विमोक्ष्यते ।। ६.
And because I have manifested here for the sake of creation, not otherwise, who, without undertaking actions here, will be released by my will?
परिभाष्य ततो देवान् जयान् वै नष्टचेतसः। अब्रवीत्स पुनस्तान् वै धृतान् दण्डे प्रजापतिः ।। ६.
Then, reproaching the gods, whose minds were lost, Jayā again spoke to them, held under discipline by the Lord of Creatures.
यस्मान्ममाभिसन्धाय सन्न्यासो वः कृतः पुरा। यस्मात्स विफलोऽयन्नो ह्यपारस्त्वेष यः कृतः। भविताऽतः सुखोदर्को देवा भावेषु जायताम् ।। ६.
Because you previously undertook renunciation with me in mind, and because that was fruitless and incomplete, therefore, O gods, in future births, happiness will result.
आत्मच्छन्देन वो जन्म भविष्यति सुरोत्तमाः। मन्वन्तरेषु संमूढाः षट्सु सर्वे गमिष्यथ ।। ६.
By your own will, O best of gods, your birth will occur; but in six manvantaras, you will all become deluded.
वैवस्वतान्तेषु सुरास्तथा स्वायम्भुवादिषु। तान् ज्ञात्वा ब्रह्मणा तत्र श्लोको गीतः पुरातनः ।। ६.
At the end of the Vaivasvata and other manvantaras, knowing this, Brahmā recited there an ancient verse.
त्रयीं विद्यां ब्रह्मचर्यं प्रसूतिं श्राद्धमेव च । यज्ञञ्चैव तु दानञ्च एषामेव तु कुर्वताम्। स हि स्म विरजा भूत्वा वसतेऽन्यप्रशंसया ।। ६.
Those who practice the threefold Veda, celibacy, procreation, śrāddha, sacrifice, and charity— having become free from passion, he dwells without seeking praise from others.
स एवं स्लोकं दृष्ट्वा तु जया देवानथाब्रवीत्। वैवस्वतेऽन्तरेऽतीते मत्समीपमिहेष्यथ ।। ६.
Having seen this verse, Jayā spoke to the gods: 'At the end of the Vaivasvata manvantara, you will come to me here.'
ततो यूयं मया सार्द्धं सिद्धिं प्राप्स्यथ शाश्वतीम्। एवमुक्त्वा तु तान् ब्रह्मा तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ।। ६.
Then, together with me, you shall attain eternal accomplishment. Having spoken thus to them, Brahmā vanished there itself.
ततो देवास्तिरोभूते ईश्वरे ह्यकुतोभयम्। प्रपन्ना अणिमाद्यैश्च युक्ता योगबलान्विताः ।। ६.
After the Lord had disappeared, the gods, fearless and endowed with the powers beginning with aṇimā, took refuge, strengthened by the force of yoga.
ततस्तेषान्तु यास्तन्वस्ताऽभवन् द्वादश ह्रदाः। जया इति समाख्याता जाता श्चोदधिसन्निभाः ।। ६.
Then, from their bodies, twelve lakes arose, known as the Jayās, vast like oceans.
ततः स्वायम्भुवे तस्मिन् सर्गेते जज्ञिरे सुराः। अजितायां रुचेः पुत्रा अजिता द्वादशात्मकः ।। ६.
Thereafter, in that creation of Svāyambhuva, the gods were born: the sons of Ruci by Ajitā, Ajita of twelve forms.
विधिश्च मुनयश्चैव क्षेमो नन्दोऽव्ययस्तथा। प्राणोऽपानः सुधामा च क्रतुशक्तिव्यवस्थिताः । इत्येते मानसाः सर्वे अजिता द्वादश स्मृताः ।। ६.
Vidhi, the sages, Kṣema, Nanda, Avyaya, Prāṇa, Apāna, Sudhāmā, Kratu, Śakti, and Vyavasthita—these twelve, all mind-born, are remembered as the Ajitās.
ते च यज्ञे सुरैः सार्द्धं यज्ञभाजस्तदा स्मृताः। स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे पूर्वे ततः स्वारोचिषे पुनः। तुषितायां समुत्पन्नाः पुनः पुत्राः स्वरोचिषः ।। ६.
They, together with the gods, were then known as participants in the sacrifice during the first Svāyambhuva Manvantara; afterwards, in the Svārociṣa Manvantara, the sons of Svarociṣa were again born from Tuṣitā.
तुषिता नाम ते ह्यासन् प्राणाख्या यात्रिकाः सुराः। पुनस्ते तुषिता देवा उत्तमे त्वन्तरे स्वयम् ।। ६.
They were called Tuṣitās, gods known as Prāṇas, travelers; again, in the Uttama Manvantara, the Tuṣitā gods themselves appeared.
उत्तमस्य तु ते पुत्राः सत्यायां जज्ञिरे शुभाः। ततः सत्याः स्मृता देवा उत्तमे चान्तरे तदा ।। ६.
Then, in the Uttama Manvantara, the auspicious sons of Uttama were born from Satyā; therefore, the gods in that period were called Satyās.
