पितृदेवाप्सरःसिद्धैर्गन्धर्वोरगचारणैः। सम्भारैस्तु शुभैर्जुष्टं तैरेवेन्द्रसदो यथा
It was graced by ancestors, gods, apsarases, siddhas, gandharvas, serpents, and celestial beings, adorned with auspicious offerings, just like the assembly of Indra.
स्तोत्रसत्रग्रहैर्देवान् पितृन् पित्र्यैश्च कर्मभिः। आनर्चुश्च यथाजाति गन्धर्वादीन् यथाविधि
With hymns, sacrificial sessions, and offerings, they worshipped the gods and ancestors with ancestral rites, and honored the gandharvas and others according to proper order.
आराधयितुमिच्छन्तस्ततः कर्मान्तरेष्वथ। जगुः सामानि गन्धर्वा ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः
Desiring to worship, then, in other rites, the Gandharvas sang Sāman hymns, and the groups of Apsarases danced.
व्याजहुर्मुनयो वाचं चित्राक्षरपदां शुभाम्। मन्त्रादितत्त्वविद्वांसो जगदुश्च परस्परम्
The sages, knowing the essence of mantras and other truths, spoke auspicious words with varied and beautiful syllables, and conversed with one another.
वितण्डावचनाश्चैके निजघ्नुः प्रतिवादिनः। ऋषयस्तत्र विद्वांसः साङ्ख्यार्थन्यायकोविदाः
Some learned seers, skilled in Sāṅkhya meanings and logic, refuted their opponents with words resembling debates.
न तत्र दुरितं किंचिद्विदधुर्ब्रह्मराक्षसाः। न च यज्ञहनो दैत्या न च यज्ञमुषोऽसुराः
There, the Brahmarākṣasas did not commit any evil; nor did the Daityas destroy the sacrifice, nor did the Asuras steal it.
प्रायश्चित्तं दुरिष्टं वा न तत्र समजायत। शक्तिप्रज्ञा क्रियायोगैर्विधिरासीत् स्वनुष्ठितः
No expiation or evil act arose there; by the power of ability, wisdom, and proper action, the ritual was performed as prescribed.
एवं वितेनिरे सत्रं द्वादशाब्दं मनीषिणः। भृग्वाद्या ऋषयो धीरा ज्योतिष्टोमान् पृथक् पृथक्। चक्रिरे पृष्ठगमनान् सर्वानयुतदक्षिणान्
Thus, the wise seers, beginning with Bhṛgu, performed the twelve-year sacrificial session, each conducting separate Jyotiṣṭoma rites, each with countless gifts.
समाप्तयज्ञास्ते सर्वे वायुमेव महाधिपम्। पप्रच्छुरमितात्मानं भवद्भिर्यदहं द्विजाः। प्रणोदितश्च वंशार्थं स च तानब्रवीत्प्रभुः
When all those with self-restraint had completed the sacrifice, they asked Vāyu, the great lord, 'O twice-born, as you have prompted us for the sake of lineage,' and the lord spoke to them.
शिष्यः स्वयम्भुवो देवः सर्वप्रत्यक्षदृग्वशी। अणिमादिभिरष्टाभिरैश्वर्यैर्यः समन्वितः
He is the disciple of self-born God, who sees all directly and is master, endowed with the eight powers beginning with aṇimā.
तिर्यग्योन्यादिभिर्धर्मैः सर्वलोकान्बिभर्त्ति यः। सप्तस्कन्धादिकं शश्वत् प्लवते योजनाद्वरः
He upholds all worlds by means of the duties of animals and others; he always crosses the seven continents and more, surpassing the yojana measure.
विषये नियता यस्य संस्थिताः सप्तका गणाः। व्यूहांस्त्रयाणां भूतानां कुर्वन् यश्च महाबलः। तेजसश्चात्त्युपध्यानन्दधातीमं शरीरिणम्
In his domain, the seven groups are established; he, of great strength, arranges the formations of the three kinds of beings, and surpasses the embodied by the energy, subtlety, and joy of the elements.
प्राणाद्या वृत्तयः पञ्च करणानां च वृत्तिभिः। प्रेर्यमाणाः शरीराणां कुर्वते यास्तु धारणम्
The five vital functions, beginning with prāṇa, along with the activities of the senses, being impelled, support the bodies.
आकाशयोनिर्हि गुणः शब्दस्पर्शसमन्वितः। तैजसप्रकृतिश्चोक्तोऽप्ययं भावो मनीषिभिः
He is said to be born of space, possessing the quality of sound and touch; this nature is also declared by the wise to be of fiery origin.
तत्राभि मानी भगवान् वायुश्चातिक्रियात्मकः। वातारणिः समाख्यातः शब्दशास्त्रविशारदः
There, the venerable Vāyu, of exceedingly active nature, is called Vātāraṇi, expert in the science of sound.
भारत्या श्लक्ष्णया सर्वान् मुनीन् प्रह्लादयन्निव। पुराणज्ञः सुमनसः पुराणाश्रययुक्तया
With gentle speech, as if delighting all the sages, knowing the Purāṇas, of good mind, endowed with the support of the Purāṇas.
सूत उवाच।। महेश्वरायोत्तमवीर्यकर्मणे सुरर्षभायामितबुद्धितेजसे। सहस्रसूर्यानलवर्च्चसे नमस्त्रिलोकसंहारविसृष्टये नमः
Sūta said: Salutation to Maheśvara, of supreme heroic deeds, the foremost among gods, of immeasurable intellect and brilliance, whose radiance equals a thousand suns and fires; salutation to him who creates and dissolves the three worlds.
प्रजापतीन् लोकनमस्कृतां स्तथा स्वयम्भुरुद्रप्रभृतीन् महेश्वरान्। भृगुं मरीचिं परमेष्ठिनं मनुं रजस्तमोधर्ममथापि कश्यपम्
To the Prajāpatis, revered by the worlds, to Svayambhū, Rudra and the other great lords, to Bhṛgu, Marīci, Parameṣṭhin, Manu, to those of the qualities of passion and darkness, and also to Kaśyapa.
वसिष्ठदक्षात्रिपुलस्त्यकर्द्दमान् रुचिं विवस्वन्तमथापि च क्रतुम्। मुनिं तथैवाङ्गिरसं प्रजापतिं प्रणम्य मूर्ध्ना पुलहं च भावतः
To Vasiṣṭha, Dakṣa, Atri, Pulastya, Kardama, Ruci, Vivasvat, and also Kratu; likewise, bowing with the head to the sage Aṅgiras, the Prajāpati, and Pulaha by nature.
तथैव चुक्रोधनमेकविंशतिं प्रजा विवृद्ध्यार्पितकार्यशासनम्। पुरातनानप्यपरांश्च शाश्वतांस्तथैव चान्यान् सगणानवस्थितान्
Likewise, to Cukrodhana and the twenty-one, to those entrusted with the task of increasing the peoples, to the ancient and the later, to the eternal ones, and to others established with their groups.
तथैव चान्यानपि धैर्यशोभिनो मुनीन् बृहस्पत्युशनःपुरोगमान्। तपःशुभाचारऋषीन् दयान्वितान् प्रणम्य वक्ष्ये कलिपापनाशिनीम्
In the same way, after bowing to other sages adorned with steadfastness—foremost among them Bṛhaspati and Uśanas—ascetics of pure conduct, endowed with compassion, I shall speak of that which destroys the sins of the Kali age.
प्रजापतेः सृष्टिमिमामनुत्तमां सुरेश देवर्षिगणैरलंकृताम्। शुबामतुल्यामनघामृषिप्रियां प्रजापतीनामपि चोल्बणार्च्चिषाम्
O lord of the gods, I shall recount this supreme creation of Prajāpati, adorned by hosts of gods and sages, auspicious, unequalled, flawless, beloved of the seers, and even cherished by the most radiant of the progenitors.
तपोभृतां ब्रह्मदिनादिकालिकीं प्रभूतमाविष्कृतपौरुषश्रियम्। श्रुतौ स्मृतौ च प्रसृतामुदाहृतां परां पराणामनिलप्रकीर्त्तिताम्
This creation, arising from the ascetics from the very beginning of Brahmā’s day, manifesting abundant and splendid power, is set forth and cited in both the Veda and the Smṛti, and is proclaimed as supreme among the supreme by Vāyu.
समासबन्धैर्नियतैर्यथातथं विशब्दनेनापि मनःप्रहर्षिणीम्। यस्याञ्च बद्धा प्रथमा प्रवृत्तिः प्राधानिकी चेश्वरकारिता च
Bound together with concise and regulated expressions, and even with words that delight the mind, in which the first and principal activity was established, and which was accomplished by the Lord.
यत्तत्स्मृतं कारणमप्रमेयं ब्रह्म प्रधानं प्रकृतिप्रसूतिः। आत्मा गुहा योनिरथापि चक्षुः क्षेत्रं ततैवामृतमक्षरञ्च
That which is remembered as the immeasurable cause—Brahman, the chief principle, the source of nature, the self, the cave, the womb, also the eye, the field, and likewise the immortal and the imperishable.
शुक्रं तपः सत्त्वमतिप्रकाशं तद्व्यष्टि नित्यं पुरुषं द्वितीयम्। तमप्रमेयं पुरुषेण युक्तं स्वयम्भुवा लोकपितामहेन
That which is pure, asceticism, sattva, exceedingly radiant, that is the individual, the eternal, the second Puruṣa, that which is immeasurable, united with the Puruṣa, by the self-born, the grandsire of the worlds.
उत्पादकत्वाद्रजसोतिरेकात् कालस्य योगान्निगमावधेश्च। क्षेत्रज्ञयुक्तान् नियतान्विकारान् लोकस्य सन्तानाविवृद्धिहेतून्। प्रकृत्यवस्था सुषुवे तथाष्टौ सङ्कल्पमात्रेण महेश्वरस्य
Because of its productive nature, the predominance of rajas, the conjunction with time, and the limit set by the Veda, the modifications joined with the knower of the field, fixed and determined, which are the causes of the growth and expansion of the world—these eight states of nature were produced by the mere will of the great Lord.
देवासुराद्रिद्रुमसागराणां मनुप्रजेशर्षिपितृद्विजानाम्। पिशाचयक्षोरगराक्षसानां ताराग्र हार्क्कर्क्षनिशाचराणाम्
Of gods, asuras, mountains, trees, oceans, Manus, lords of progeny, seers, ancestors, twice-born, piśācas, yakṣas, serpents, rākṣasas, stars, planets, hārkkarkṣas, and night-wanderers—
मासर्त्तु संवत्सररात्र्यहानां दिक्कालयोगादियुगायनानाम्। वनौषधीनामपि वीरुधाञ्च जलौकसामप्सरसां पशूनाम्
Of months, seasons, years, days and nights, directions, times, yugas, ayanas, of forest plants and herbs, of creepers, of aquatic beings, of apsarases, and of animals—
विद्युत्सरिन्मेघविहङ्गमानां यत्सूक्ष्मगं यद्भुवि यद्वियत्स्थम्। यत्स्थावरं यत्र यदस्ति किञ्चित् सर्वस्य तस्यास्ति गतिर्विभक्तिः
Of lightning, rivers, clouds, birds, whatever is subtle, whatever is on earth, whatever is in the sky, whatever is stationary, whatever exists anywhere—of all these, there is a course and a distinction.
