Whether in one's own lineage or another's, the offering of rice-balls for a married couple, if not done separately, makes the śrāddha and the offerings of rice-balls and water fruitless.
Having placed sesame seeds in the rice-ball vessel, filled it with pure water, and sprinkled it three times, one should bow to all and complete the rite.
Having dismissed the ancestors and sipped water, one should make the gods bear witness, saying: 'May the gods, beginning with Brahmā and Īśāna, be my witnesses; having reached Gayā, I have fulfilled my obligation to the ancestors.'
'I have come to Gayā, O God, for the sake of the ancestral rite, O wielder of the mace; you alone are witness, O Lord, that I am freed from the three debts.'
In all places, O Nārada, the offering of rice-balls should be done in this way, beginning from the Pretaparvata and then in the holy places in order.
Then, on the Pretaparvata, one should place cakes mixed with sesame, turning counterclockwise and facing south, O sage among the gods.
May all my ancestors, whoever exist in the form of departed spirits, be fully satisfied with offerings of flour mixed with sesame seeds.
May all beings, moving and unmoving, from Brahma down to a blade of grass, be completely satisfied by the water I have offered.
By this, O Nārada, his ancestors are freed from the state of being spirits; through his greatness, that condition does not arise in his lineage.
The stone known by name as Pretaśilā, on the summit of Gayā, is famous for granting liberation, and the staff-bearing one abides there in the form of a sacred place, mantra, and so on.
First, at the five sacred waters and then at the northern Mānasa, one should perform the rite: after sipping water for purification, with kuśa grass in hand, one should sprinkle water on the head.
One should go to the northern Mānasa and bathe there with the mantra: 'I bathe in the northern Mānasa for the purification of myself.'
For attainment of the solar world and other realms, for the liberation of ancestors, after offering water to the gods and others, one should then perform the śrāddha with rice-balls.
Here is the lake called Mānasa, and beyond it is the northern Mānasa; after bowing to and worshipping the Sun there, one leads the ancestors to the solar world.
Salutations to the blessed Lord, who takes the forms of Soma, Bhūma, and Jñāna, who is the essence of life, Bhṛgu, the Sun, the Moon, Rāhu, and Ketu.
From the northern Mānasa, the silent one should proceed to the southern Mānasa; that is called the northern sacred ford, which grants liberation. Whoever bathes there ascends to heaven with his own body.
In the middle is the sacred ford Kanakhala, renowned in the three worlds; one who bathes there shines like gold and attains purity.
To the south of it is the sacred ford called southern Mānasa; therefore, Kanakhala is known in the world as the supreme sacred ford.
At the southern Mānasa, three sacred fords are mentioned; after bathing in them according to the rite, one should perform śrāddha separately at each.
I bathe in the southern Mānasa for the purification of myself, for attainment of the solar world and other realms, and for the liberation of the ancestors.
O Sun, I bathe here in the southern Mānasa for release from the torments of the mass of sins such as brahminicide.
I bow to the Sun for the satisfaction of the ancestors, for their deliverance, for sons, grandsons, wealth, sovereignty, long life, health, and increase.
Having performed bathing, worship, and so on, and having performed the śrāddha with rice-balls, after bowing to the silent Sun, one should recite this mantra.
From there, one should go to the Phalgu sacred ford, the best of all sacred fords; by performing śrāddha there, liberation is always attained for the performers and their ancestors.
At Brahmā's request, Viṣṇu once became Phalgu; in the southern fire, the offering made there became known as Phalgu Tīrtha.
There, in Phalgu, the wish-fulfilling cow yields water and earth; because it is hidden from sight, Phalgu Tīrtha is never fruitless.
All the sacred bathing places that exist throughout the worlds come together, along with the gods, to Phalgu Tīrtha for bathing.
The water at Viṣṇu's feet is the Gaṅgā; Phalgu, the foremost, the wielder of the mace, himself appears there in liquid form—therefore, it is considered greater than the Gaṅgā.
Even one who performs a thousand horse sacrifices a thousand times does not obtain the merit that is gained at Phalgu Tīrtha.
With devotion, I bathe in Viṣṇu's water at Phalgu Tīrtha for the sake of my ancestors, so they may attain Viṣṇu's world, and for the sake of enjoyment and liberation.
