६२.५० मेधा मेधातिथिश्चैव सत्यमेधास्तथैव च । पृश्रिमेधाल्पमेधाश्च भूयोमेधादयः प्रभुः
Medhā, Medhātithi, Satyamedhā, Pṛśrimedhā, Alpamedhā, Bhūyomedhā, and others—these are the lords among the Sumedhas.
दीप्तिमेधा यशोमेधाः स्थिरमेधास्तथैव च । सर्वमेधाश्वमेधाश्च प्रतिमेधाश्च यः स्मृतः । मेधावान् मेधहर्त्ता च कीर्त्तितास्तु सुमेधसः
Dīptimedhā, Yaśomedhā, Sthiramedhā, Sarvamedhā, Aśvamedhā, Pratimedhā, Medhāvān, and Medhahartā—these are also named among the Sumedhas.
विभुरिन्द्रस्तदा तेषामासीद्विक्रान्तपौरुषः । पौलस्त्यो वेदबाहुश्च यजुर्नामा च काश्यपः
Vibhu was their Indra at that time, powerful in valor; Paulastya was Vedabāhu, and Kāśyapa was called Yajur.
हिरण्यरोमाङ्गिरसो वेदश्रीश्चैव भार्गवः । ऊर्द्ध्वबाहुश्च वासिष्ठः पर्जन्यः पौलहस्तथा । सत्यनेत्रस्तथात्रेय ऋषयो रैवतान्तरे
Hiraṇyaroma was Āṅgirasa, Vedaśrī was Bhārgava, Ūrddhvabāhu was Vāsiṣṭha, Parjanya was Paulaha, and Satyanetra was Ātreya—these were the sages in the Raivata interval.
महापुराणसम्भाव्यः प्रत्यङ्गपरहा शुचिः । बलबन्धुर्निरामित्रः केतुभृङ्गो दृढव्रतः । चरिष्णवस्य पुत्रास्ते पञ्चमञ्चैतदन्तरम्
He is esteemed as a great Purāṇa, devoted to each limb, pure, strong, without enemies, bearing the banner, firm in his vows; these are the sons of Cariṣṇava, the fifth in this sequence.
स्वारोचिषोत्तमश्चैव तामसो रैवतस्तथा । प्रियव्रतान्वया ह्येते चत्वारो मनवस्तथा
Svārociṣa, Uttama, Tāmasa, and Raivata—these four Manus are of the lineage of Priyavrata.
षष्ठे खल्वथ पर्याये देवा ये चाक्षुषेऽन्तरे । आद्याः प्रसूता भाव्याश्च पृथुकाश्च दिवौकसः । महानुभावलेखाश्च पञ्च देवगणाः स्मृतः
In the sixth cycle, the gods who exist in the Cākṣuṣa interval—the first-born, those yet to be born, and the Pṛthukas among the celestial beings, as well as the mighty Lekhās—are remembered as five groups of gods.
दिवौकसः सर्ग एष प्रोच्यते मातृनामभिः । अत्रेः पुत्रस्य नप्तार आरण्यस्य प्रजापतेः । गणाश्च तेषां देवानामेकैको ह्यष्टकः स्मृतः
This creation of the celestial beings is spoken of by the names of the Mothers; the grandsons of Atri's son, the progeny of Āraṇya, the lord of creatures; and each group of these gods is reckoned as eight.
अन्तरिक्षो वसुहयो ह्यतिथिश्च प्रियवतः । श्रोता मन्ता सुमन्ता च आद्या ह्येते प्रकीर्त्तिताः
Antarikṣa, Vasuhaya, Atithi, Priyavata, Śrotā, Mantā, Sumantā—these are the first ones enumerated.
श्येनभद्रस्तथा पश्यः पथ्यनेत्रो महायशाः । सुमनाश्च सुवेताश्च रैवतः सुप्रचेतसः । द्युतिश्चैव महासत्त्वः प्रसूताः परिकीर्त्तिताः ॥२.१.
Śyenabhadra, Paśya, Pathyanetra, Mahāyaśā, Sumanā, Suvetā, Raivata, Supracetasa, Dyuti, and Mahāsattva—these are the offspring proclaimed.
६२.६० विजयः सुजयश्चैव मनोद्यानौ तथैव च । सुमतिः सुपरिश्चैव विज्ञातोऽर्थपतिश्च यः । भाव्या ह्येते स्मृता देवाः पृथुकांस्तु निबोधत
Vijaya, Sujaya, Manodyāna, Sumati, Supari, Vijñāta, Arthapati—these are remembered as the future gods; now hear of the Pṛthukas.
अजिष्टः शाक्यनो देवो वानपृष्ठस्तथैव च । शाङ्करः सत्यधृष्णुश्च विष्णुश्च विजयस्तथा । अजितश्च महाभागः पृथुकास्ते दिवौकसः
Ajiṣṭa, Śākyana, Vānapṛṣṭha, Śāṅkara, Satyadhṛṣṇu, Viṣṇu, Vijaya, and Ajita the illustrious—these are the Pṛthukas among the celestial beings.
लेखांस्तथा प्रवक्ष्यामि ब्रुवतो मे निबोधत । मनोजवः प्रघासस्तु प्रचेतास्तु महायशाः
I will now speak of the Lekhās; listen as I tell: Manojava, Praghāsa, Pracetā, and Mahāyaśā.
वातो ध्रुवक्षितिश्चैव अद्भुतश्चैव वीर्यवान् । अवनो बृहस्पतिश्चैव लेखाः सम्परिकीर्त्तिताः
Vāta, Dhruvakṣiti, Adbhuta the mighty, Avana, and Bṛhaspati—these Lekhās are enumerated.
मनोजवो महावीर्यस्तेषामिन्द्रस्तदाभवत् । उन्नतो भार्गवश्चैव हविष्मानङ्गिरःसुतः
Among them, Manojava of great strength became Indra; Unnata, Bhārgava, and Haviṣmān, son of Aṅgiras.
सुधामा काश्यपश्चैव वासिष्ठो विरजस्तथा । अतिमानश्च पौलस्त्यः सहिष्णुः पौलहस्तथा । मधुरा त्रेय इत्येते सप्त वै चाक्षुषेऽन्तरे
Sudhāmā, Kāśyapa, Vāsiṣṭha, Viraja, Atimāna, Paulastya, Sahiṣṇu, Paulaha, Madhurā, and Treya—these seven belong to the Cākṣuṣa interval.
ऊरुः पूरुः शतद्युम्नस्तपस्वी सत्यवाक् कृतिः । अग्निष्टुदतिरात्रश्च सुद्युम्नश्चेति ते नव
Ūru, Pūru, Śatadyumna, Tapasvī, Satyavāk, Kṛti, Agniṣṭuda, Atirātra, and Sudyumna—these are the nine.
अभिमन्युश्च दशमो नाद्वलेया मनोः सुताः । चाक्षुषस्य सुता ह्येते षष्ठं चैव तदन्तरम्
Abhimanyu is the tenth; these are the sons of Manu, born of Nādvālī; these are the sons of Cākṣuṣa, the sixth in order.
वैवस्वतेन सङ्ख्यातस्तस्य सर्गो महात्मनः । विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्या च कथितं वै मया द्विजाः
The creation of Vaivasvata, the great soul, has been enumerated; I have described it in detail and sequence, O twice-born.
चाक्षुषस्य तु दायादः सम्भूतः कश्यपान्वये । तस्यान्ववाये येऽप्यन्ये तन्नो ब्रूहि यथातथम् ॥२.१.
The heir of Cākṣuṣa was born in the lineage of Kaśyapa; tell us truly of those others who arose in his succession.
६२.७० सूत उवाच॥ चाक्षुषस्य निसर्गन्तु समासाच्छ्रोतुमर्हथ । तस्यान्ववाये सम्भूतः पृथुर्वैन्यः प्रतापवान्
Sūta said: You should hear briefly of the creation of Cākṣuṣa; in his lineage, Pṛthu, son of Vena, was born, renowned for his prowess.
प्रजानां पतयश्चान्ये दक्षः प्राचेतसस्तथा । उत्तानपादं जग्राह पुत्रमत्रिः प्रजापतिः
Other lords of creatures were Dakṣa and Prācetasa; Atri, the lord of creatures, accepted Uttānapāda as his son.
दक्षकस्य तु पुत्रोऽस्य राजा ह्यासीत् प्रजापतेः । स्वायम्भुवेन मनुना दत्तोऽत्रेः कारणं प्रति
Daksha's son became king, indeed, of the progeny of Prajapati; by Svayambhu Manu, he was given to Atri for a certain purpose.
मन्वन्तरमथासाद्य भविष्यं चाक्षुषस्य ह । षष्ठं तदनुवक्ष्यामि उपोद्घातेन वै द्विजाः
When the future Manvantara of Cākṣuṣa arrives, I will recount the sixth in detail, O twice-born, with an introduction.
उत्तानपादाच्चतुरा सूनृता वित्तभाविनी । उत्पन्ना चाधिधर्मेण ध्रुवस्य जननी शुभा । धर्मस्य पत्न्यां लक्ष्म्यां वै उत्पन्ना सा शुचिस्मिता
From Uttānapāda four daughters were born: Sūnṛtā, Vittabhāvinī, and also Adhidharma, the auspicious mother of Dhruva; from Lakṣmī, wife of Dharma, was born Śucismitā, radiant with purity.
ध्रुवञ्च कीर्त्तिमन्तञ्च अयस्मन्तं वसुं तथा । उत्तानपादोऽजनयत् कन्ये द्वे च शुचिस्मिते । मनस्विनीं स्वराञ्चैव त्रयोः पुत्राः प्रकीर्त्तिताः
Uttānapāda begot Dhruva, Kīrttimanta, Ayasmanta, and Vasu, as well as two daughters, Śucismitā and Manasvinī; Svarā was also born, thus three sons are mentioned.
ध्रुवो वर्षसहस्राणि दश दिव्यानि वीर्यवान् । तपस्तेपे निराहारः प्रार्थयन् विपुलं यशः
Dhruva, powerful, practiced austerity for ten divine years without food, desiring great fame.
त्रेतायुगे तु प्रथमे पौत्रः स्वायम्भुवस्य सः । आत्मानं धारयन् योगात् प्रार्थयन् सुमहद्यशः
In the first Treta Yuga, the grandson of Svāyambhuva, sustaining himself through yoga, sought exceedingly great renown.
तस्मै ब्रह्मा ददौ प्रीतो ज्योतिषां स्थानमुत्तमम् । आभूतसंप्लवं हृद्यमस्तोदयविवर्जितम्
To him, Brahmā, pleased, granted the highest place among the stars, free from the rising and setting, delightful and beyond dissolution.
तस्यातिमात्रामृद्धिं च महिमानं निरीक्ष्य ह । दैत्यासुराणामाचार्यः श्लोकमप्युशना जगौ॥२.१.
Beholding his extraordinary prosperity and greatness, the teacher of the Daityas and Asuras, Uśanas, sang a verse.
