पश्यामि न जगत्यस्मिन्सर्वज्ञं सर्वदर्शनम्। अज्ञात्वाऽन्यतमं लोके सन्देहविनिवर्त्तकम् ।। ४२.
I do not see in this world anyone who is all-knowing and all-seeing, nor anyone who can dispel doubt without knowing another in the world.
मेरोः कुहरिणीं गत्वा चचार परमं तपः। यत्र कार्त्तस्वरक्फूर्जज्ज्योत्स्नाजालैर्निरन्तरम् ।। ४२.
He went to a cave on Mount Meru and performed supreme austerity there, where the golden palm trees are ever illuminated by streams of moonlight.
सदा प्रबाधते विष्वक्तमःस्तोमं दृशन्तुदम्। चकास्ते यत्र परमं कान्तारमतिसुन्दरम् ।। ४२.
There, the light always dispels the mass of darkness in every direction, and there shines a supremely beautiful forest.
नानाद्रुमलत ---त्पक्षिनिनादितम्। क्षुत्पिपासाभयक्रोधतापग्लानिविवर्जितम् ।। ४२.
Resounding with the cries of many kinds of birds among various trees and creepers, it is free from hunger, thirst, fear, anger, fatigue, and exhaustion.
जलाशयैर्बहुविधैः पद्मिनीखण्डमण्डितैः । जातरूपशिलानद्धतटसञ्चारपाक्ष ।। ४२.
Adorned with many kinds of lakes, filled with clusters of lotuses, its banks lined with golden stones.
युक्तमम्भोज पवनैः सेव्यमानं समन्ततः। शिवैरध्यासितम्भावैर्हिंस्रैः सत्त्वैः समुज्झितम् ।। ४२.
Filled everywhere with breezes from lotuses, attended on all sides, inhabited by auspicious beings, and devoid of violent creatures.
निर्जनं दिव्यलतिकाप्रियखण्डवराजितम्। शूकैः पारावतै र्हृद्यैरुन्मदन्मत्तकोकिलम् ।। ४२.
A secluded place, adorned with beloved clusters of divine creepers, delightful with the calls of partridges and pigeons, and intoxicated, maddened cuckoos.
उत्पतत्पद्मरजसां पटलामोददिङ्मुखम्। तत्रापि काञ्चिनी दिव्या गुहा परमशोभना ।। ४२.
The quarters there were fragrant with layers of rising lotus pollen; in that place too was a certain wondrous cave, supremely beautiful.
तां प्रविश्य जिता हारो जितचित्तो जितासनः। सस्मार वेदांश्चतुरस्तदेकाग्रमना मुनिः ।। ४२.
Entering that cave, the sage—master of his senses, mind, and posture—recollected the four Vedas with one-pointed mind.
त्रयी जगाम शरदां शतस्य स्मरतोऽस्य हि । प्रादुरासंस्ततो वेदाश्चत्वारश्चारुदर्शनाः ।। ४२.
As he meditated thus, a hundred autumns passed; then, the four Vedas, of charming appearance, became manifest before him.
स्फुरत्पद्मपलाशाक्षा जटामुकुटधारिणः। कुशमुष्टिकराम्भोजा मृगत्वङ्मण्डितांसकाः ।। ४२.
Their eyes shone like lotus petals, their hair matted in crowns, holding lotus-like hands with sacred grass, and their shoulders adorned with deer skins.
स्वरैः षोडशभिः क्लृप्त वदनाः प्रणवान्तराः। कचवर्गोद्भवैर्वर्णैः पञ्चावयवपाणयः ।। ४२.
Their faces were formed with sixteen notes, containing the sacred syllable Om; their hands had five parts, arising from the guttural group of sounds.
पवर्गदक्षचरणा वामपादास्तवर्गतः। आतरन्त्यन्तवर्णाश्च येषां कुक्षिद्वयात्मकौ ।। ४२.
Their right feet were from the labial group, their left from the dental group; their bodies were composed of the final letters, and their two sides formed the abdomen.
नाभिनिद्राः कान्तपृष्ठा मोदरा यरलवोत्कचाः। अग्निदक्षांशरुचिरा धराग्रीवा भृतासकाः ।। ४२.
Their navels were the nasal sounds, their backs the palatal group, their bellies the semi-vowels, their necks radiant with the fire and lunar groups, and their shoulders well-formed.
अन्तस्थसन्धिसंस्थाना वैखरीवाग्विजृम्भिताः। अपश्यन्मथुरामेषां हृदयाम्भोजकल्पिताम् ।। ४२.
With their inner joints and articulations, their speech unfolded as articulated words; they saw Mathurā established in the lotus of their hearts.
हरेर्भगवतः साक्षादाविर्भावस्थली हि सा। काशीमपश्यद्भ्रूमध्ये मायामाधारसंस्थिताम् ।। ४२.
For that is truly the manifest place of Hari, the Blessed Lord; in the space between the brows, he saw Kāśī, established as the support of Māyā.
लिङ्गदेशे ततः काञ्चीमवन्तीं नाभिमण्डले । कण्ठस्थां द्वारकामेषां प्रयागं प्राणगं तथा ।। ४२.
Then, in the region of the liṅga, he saw Kāñcī; Avantī at the navel; Dvārakā at the throat; and Prayāga at the place of the breath.
सव्यापसव्ययोस्तेषां गड्गाऽपि यमुना नदी । मध्ये सरस्वती साक्षाद्गयाक्षेत्रं तथानने ।। ४२.
On their right and left sides were the Gaṅgā and Yamunā rivers; in the middle, Sarasvatī herself, and Gayā-kshetra at the mouth.
हनुग्रीवामध्यगतं प्रभासक्षेत्रमुत्तमम्। बदर्य्याश्रममेतेषां ब्रह्मरन्ध्रे ददर्श ह ।। ४२.
At the junction of the chin and neck was the supreme holy place Prabhāsa; at the crown of the head, he saw the hermitage of Badarī.
पौण्ड्रवर्धननेपालपीठं नयनयोर्युगे। पीठं पूर्णगिरिंनाम ललाटे समदृश्यत ।। ४२.
At the pair of eyes was the seat of Pauṇḍravardhana and Nepāla; on the forehead appeared the seat called Pūrṇagiri.
कण्ठे च मथुरापीठं काञ्चीपीठं कटिस्थितम्। जालन्धरं तथा पीठं स्तनदेशेष्वदृश्यत ।। ४२.
At the throat was the seat of Mathurā, at the waist the seat of Kāñcī; likewise, the seat of Jālandhara was seen at the breasts.
भृगुपीठं कर्णदेशे ह्ययोध्यां नासिकापुटे। ब्रह्मरन्ध्रे स्थितं ब्राह्यं शैवं सीमन्तसीमनि ।। ४२.
At the ears was the seat of Bhṛgu, at the tip of the nose Ayodhyā; at the crown of the head was the Brāhma seat, and the Śaiva seat at the hair parting.
शाक्तं जिह्वाग्र धिषणं वैष्णवं हृदयाम्बुजे। सौरं चक्षुःप्रदेशस्थं बौद्धञ्छायासु सङ्गतम् ।। ४२.
The Śākta seat was at the tip of the tongue, the Dhiṣaṇa seat at the palate, the Vaiṣṇava seat in the lotus of the heart, the Saura seat at the region of the eyes, and the Bauddha seat united with the shadows.
सौत्रामणिं कण्ठदेशे पशुबन्धमथोरसि। वाजपेयं कटितटे ह्यग्निहोत्रं तथानने ।। ४२.
The Sautrāmaṇi seat was at the throat, the Paśubandha at the chest, the Vājapeya at the waist, and the Agnihotra at the mouth.
अश्वमेधं कटितटे नरमेधमथोदरे। राजसूयं शिरोदेशे आवसथ्यं तथाऽधरे ।। ४२.
The Aśvamedha is on the throat, the Naramedha within the belly; the Rājasūya is on the head, and the Āvasathya likewise below.
ऊर्द्ध्वोष्ठे दक्षिणाग्निञ्च गार्हपत्यं मुखान्तरे। हव्यं श्रुतौ मन्त्रभेदांस्तथा रोमस्ववस्थितान्। भृत्यैरिव महाराजं पुराणैर्न्यायमिश्रितैः ।। ४२.
On the upper lip is the Dakṣiṇāgni, the Gārhapatya within the mouth; the oblation is in the ear, the variations of mantras are on the hairs, as attendants to a great king, accompanied by ancient and just rites.
संहिताभिश्च तन्त्रैश्च पृथक्पृथगुपासितान्। कर्म ज्ञानोपासनाभिर्जनानुग्रहकारकान् ।। ४२.
By the Saṃhitās and Tantras, worshipped separately, these are the acts, knowledge, and meditations that bring about the welfare of people.
दृष्ट्वा सुविस्मितमना मुनिः कृष्णो बभूव तान् । ब्रह्मतेजोमयान्दिव्यांस्तपतोऽर्कानिवच्युतान्। ज्लतोऽग्नी निवोदर्कान्कोटीन्दुसमदर्शनान् ।। ४२.
Seeing them, the sage Kṛṣṇa was filled with wonder; they were radiant with divine Brahman-light, blazing like suns born of ascetic heat, resembling fires rising from fuel, and shining like millions of moons.
ववन्दे सहसोत्थाय दण्डवत्पतितो मुनिः। कृतार्थोऽहं कृतार्थोऽहं कृतार्थोऽहमितीरयन् ।। ४२.
The sage immediately rose, bowed down in prostration, and said, 'I am fulfilled, I am fulfilled, I am fulfilled.'
अद्य मे सफलं जन्म अद्य मे सफलं मनः। अद्य मे सफलञ्चायुर्यद्भवन्तोऽक्षिगोचराः ।। ४२.
Today my birth is fruitful, today my mind is fruitful, today my life is fruitful, for you have come within the range of my sight.
