When the interval of Vaivasvata Manu arrived, those Adityas, having been worshipped, gathered together and spoke among themselves.
Entering this same illustrious Aditi, in the present Vaivasvata interval, through yoga and with half their consciousness—
"Let us go to become her sons; that will be our highest good. Those born from Aditi will attain the status of Adityas."
Having spoken thus, all of them, in the interval of Chakshusha Manu, were born again as the twelve Adityas from Kashyapa, son of Marichi.
Indra and Vishnu were also born again, and in this Vaivasvata interval, the divine Nara and Narayana as well.
For these gods too, creation and dissolution are described, just as in this world the sun rises and sets, and so it is for Prajapati, Vishnu, and the great-souled Bhava.
Because they are supreme in hearing and are endowed with the qualities of sound and the like, and possess the eightfold powers beginning with Anima, therefore those gods were born.
Thus, this attachment in the world is said to be the cause of creation. By the curse of Brahma, the Jayas were born in the Swayambhuva Manvantara and were conquered.
In the Svarocisha Manvantara, they were the Tusitas; in the Uttama, the Satyas; in the Tamasa, the Haris; in the Charishnava, the Vaikunthas; in the Chakshusha, the Sadhyas; and now, in the present, the Adityas.
Dhata, Aryaman, Mitra, Varuna, Aṃśa, Bhaga, Indra, Vivasvan, Pusha, and Parjanya are remembered as the ten.
Then Tvashta, then Vishnu, the youngest and the eldest; thus these twelve Adityas are remembered as the sons of Kashyapa.
From Surabhi and Kashyapa were born eleven Rudras, sanctified by great austerity and by the grace of Mahadeva.
Angaraka, Sarpa, Nirriti, Sadasaspati, Ajaikapada, Ahirbudhnya, Urdhvaketu, and also Jvara—
Bhuvaneshvara, Mrityu, and the renowned Kapala—these eleven gods are the Rudras, lords of the three worlds; Surabhi gave birth to them through her great austerity.
Then, two other daughters were born to Surabhi: Rohini, shining like Rudra, and the illustrious Gandhari.
From Rohini were born four daughters, renowned in the worlds: Surupa, Hamsakila, Bhadra, and Kamadugha; and Kamadugha gave birth to two daughters, Surupa and Tanaya.
O King, Hamsakila gave birth to the Mrishis, and from Bhadra were born the illustrious and greatly fortunate Gandharvas, the sons of Vajin.
Then were born the Uchchaihshravas, swift as the mind and moving in the sky; white, tawny, and dappled horses, deer, green and white; these horses of Gandharva lineage were nourished by the gods and Rudra.
Again, from Surabhi was born the glorious Candrabhāsuprabha, adorned with a garland, bearing a crest, radiant, born from the abode of nectar; given by Surabhi's favor, he became the Maheśvara banner.
Thus have the Rudras and Adityas, sons of Kashyapa, been described; the Sadhyas, Visvedevas, and Vasus are also known as sons of Dharma.
Here, the wives of Arishtanemi bore sixteen children; among the learned, four are known as Vidyuts; the best were born from Angiras, hymns honored by the Brahmarshis.
The weapons of the gods are said to be the offspring of the devarshi Krishashva; these are born again at the end of each thousand ages.
All the groups of gods, O Brahmins, and thirty-three born of the mind, for these gods too, both dissolution and creation are declared.
Just as, in this world, the sun rises and sets, so too do these hosts of gods come into being age after age.
The Sadhyas, Vasus, Visvedevas, Rudras, and Adityas are renowned for their noble birth, power, and deeds.
We wish to know the distinction between Prajapati, Vishnu, and the great-souled Bhava, and who among them excels over whom.
Who arises from whom, and in whom does each abide? Who among them is greater, who is intermediate, and who is lesser?
Who among them is foremost, who is subordinate, and who is great by deeds, birth, and power? Tell us all this, for you truly know it as it is.
On this matter, I will describe to you what is remembered regarding their mutual distinctions; listen to what I wish to say about Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra.
The forms of the self-born, known as rajasic, tamasic, and sattvic, are said to arise in each age.
