Vayu Purana

पद्मोत्पलदलोन्मिश्रं फेनाद्यावर्त्तविग्रहम्। जलं मणिदलप्रख्यमावहन्ति सरिद्वराः ।। ३९.

The excellent rivers bring water resembling jewels, mixed with lotus and water-lily petals, swirling with foam and eddies.

न तु ब्रह्मर्षयो देवा नासुराः पितरस्तथा। न खल्वन्येऽप्रमेयस्य विदुरीशस्य तत्पुरम् ।। ३९.

But neither Brahmarṣis, nor gods, nor Asuras, nor ancestors, nor indeed any others know the city of that immeasurable Lord.

तत्र ये ध्यानमव्यग्राः सुयुक्ता विजितेन्द्रियाः। पश्यन्तीह महात्मानः पुरन्तद्गोवृषात्मनः ।। ३९.

There, those who are unwavering in meditation, well-disciplined and self-controlled, see the great souls—the forms of Govṛṣātmā—in this very place.

मध्ये पुरवरेन्द्रस्य तस्याप्रतिमतेजसः। सुमहान्मेरुसङ्गाशो दिव्यो भद्रश्रिया वृतः ।। ३९.

In the center of that peerless city, of unrivaled splendor, stands a great and divine peak like Meru, adorned with auspicious beauty.

सहस्र पादः प्रासादस्तपनीयमयः शुभः। अनुपमेयै रत्नैश्च सर्वतः स विभूषितः ।। ३९.

A thousand-pillared palace, splendid and made of gold, is there, adorned on all sides with incomparable jewels.

स्फटिकैश्चन्द्रसङ्काशैर्वैढूर्यैः सोमसंप्रभैः। बालसूर्य्यप्रभैश्चैव सौवर्णैश्चाग्निसंप्रभैः ।। ३९.

It shone with crystals like the moon, with beryl stones bright as the moon, with gems radiant as the young sun, with gold glowing like fire.

राजतैश्चापि शुशुभे इन्द्रनीलमयैः शुभैः। दृढैर्वज्रमयैश्चैव इत्येवं सुमहाहितैः ।। ३९.

It also gleamed with silver, with beautiful sapphires, and with strong diamonds—thus, with these great and splendid gems.

जलैश्च विविधाकारैर्दीप्यद्भिरधिवासितम्। चन्द्ररश्मिप्रकाशाभिः पताकाभिरलंकृतम् ।। ३९.

Perfumed with waters of various kinds, shining brightly, adorned with banners gleaming with the radiance of moonbeams.

रुक्मघण्टानिनादैश्च नित्यप्रमुदितोत्सवः। किन्नराणामधीवासैः सन्ध्याभ्राकारराजितैः ।। ३९.

Ever joyful with the resounding tones of golden bells, and the dwellings of Kinnaras, radiant like the colors of the evening clouds.

परिवारसमन्तात्तु हेमपुष्पोदकप्रभैः। यथा हि मेरुशैलेन्द्रो हेमश्रृङ्गैर्विराजते ।। ३९.

All around, surrounded by attendants whose brilliance rivals golden flowers and water; just as Mount Meru shines with its golden peaks.

चामीकरमयीभिस्तु पताकाभिस्तथा पुरम् । एवं प्रासादराजोऽसौ भूमिकाभिर्विराजते ।। ३९.

The city is likewise adorned with banners made of pure gold; thus does that palace of many stories shine forth.

वसन्तप्रतिमा यत्र त्र्यम्बकस्य निवेशने। लक्ष्मीः श्रीश्च वपुर्म्माया कीर्त्तिः शोभा सरस्वती ।। ३९.

There, in the abode of Tryambaka, reside the forms of Spring, Lakshmi, Shri, Beauty, Illusion, Fame, Splendor, and Sarasvati.

देव्या वै सहिता ह्येता रूपगन्धसमन्विताः। नित्या ह्यपरिसङ्ख्याताः परस्परगुणाश्रयाः । भूषणं सर्वरत्नानां योन्यः कान्तिविलासयोः ।। ३९.

Together with the goddess, these are endowed with beauty and fragrance, countless and eternal, mutually dependent in their qualities, the adornment of all jewels, each the source of charm and delight for the other.

कोटिशतं महाभागा विभज्यात्मानमात्मना। भगवन्तं महात्मानं प्रतिमोदन्त्यतन्द्रिताः। ।। ३९.

Hundreds of millions of these noble ones, dividing themselves by their own power, ceaselessly delight in the great Lord of immense soul.

तासां सहस्रशश्चान्याः पृष्ठतः परिचारिकाः। रूपिण्यश्च श्रिया युक्ताः सर्वाः कमललोचनाः ।। ३९.

And thousands more, their attendants, stand behind them—beautiful in form, endowed with splendor, all with lotus-like eyes.

लीलाविलाससंयुक्तैर्भावैरतिमनोहरैः। गणैस्ताः सह मोदन्ते शैलाभैः पावकोपमैः ।। ३९.

With gestures full of playful grace and most enchanting moods, they rejoice together with hosts resembling mountains and blazing fire.

कुब्जा कामनिकामैश्च वरगात्रा हयाननाः । पुण्ड्राश्च विकटाश्चैव करलाश्चिपिटाननाः ।। ३९.

There are hunchbacked women, those with passionate desires, those of excellent limbs, horse-faced ones, dwarfs, grotesque ones, those with large hands, and flat-faced women.

लम्बोदरा ह्रस्वभुजा विनेत्रा ह्रस्वपादिकाः। मृगेन्द्रवदनाश्चान्या गजवक्रोदरास्तथा ।। ३९.

Some have pendulous bellies, short arms, are one-eyed, or have short feet; others have lion-like faces, and some have elephant trunks and bellies.

गजाननास्तथैवान्याः सिंह व्याघ्राननास्तथा। लोहिताक्षा महास्तन्यः सुभगाश्चारुलोचनाः ।। ३९.

Others have elephant faces, or faces of lions and tigers; red-eyed, large-breasted, fortunate, and with beautiful eyes.

ह्रस्वकुञ्चितकेशाश्च सुन्दर्य्यश्चारुलोचनाः। अन्याश्च कामरूपिण्यो नानावेषधराः स्त्रियः ।। ३९.

Some have short, curly hair, some are beautiful with lovely eyes; others are shape-shifters, women adorned in various costumes.

अभ्यन्तरपरिस्कन्धा देवावासगृहोचिताः। रराम भगवांस्तत्र दशबाहुर्महेश्वरः ।। ३९.

Within the inner chambers, suited to the dwellings of the gods, the blessed ten-armed Maheshvara delighted there.

नन्दिना च गणैः सार्द्धं विश्वरूपैर्महात्मभिः। तथा रुद्रगणैश्चापि तुल्यौदार्य्यपराक्रमैः ।। ३९.

Together with Nandi and the hosts of attendants, of universal forms and great souls, as well as with the Rudra hosts, equal in generosity and valor.

पावकात्मजसङ्काशैर्यूपदंष्ट्रोत्कटाननैः। वन्द्यमानो विमानश्च पूज्यमानश्च तत्परैः ।। ३९.

Surrounded by those resembling the sons of Fire, with fierce faces and protruding fangs, he was honored and worshipped by those devoted to him, even in the aerial chariot.

सर्वर्तुकुसुमां मालां जिघ्रमाणोरसि स्थितान् । नीलोत्पलदलश्यामं पृथुताम्रायतेक्षणम् ।। ३९.

He inhaled a garland of flowers from all seasons, resting on his chest; his complexion dark as a blue lotus petal, with large, coppery, wide eyes.

ईषत्कराल्लम्बोष्ठं तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रा गणाञचितम्। षडूर्द्ध्वनेत्रं दुष्प्रेक्ष्यं रुचिरञ्चीरवाससम् ।। ३९.

With slightly raised hands, thick lips, sharp fangs, surrounded by hosts, six eyes above, difficult to behold, clad in a beautiful garment of bark.

आहवेष्वपरिक्लिष्टं देवानामरिनाशनम्। बाहुना बाहुमावेश्य पार्श्वे सव्येऽन्तरे स्थितम् ।। ३९.

In battle, unwearied, the destroyer of the gods’ enemies, he stands with one arm entwined around another, positioned at his left side.

रराजापदिशन्तस्य वामाग्रकरगोचरम्। महाभैरवनिर्घोषं बलेनाप्रतिमौजसम्। दशवर्णधनुश्चैव विचित्रं शोभतेऽधिकम् ।। ३९.

He shone forth, indicating the direction, within reach of his left hand; his bow, ten cubits long, wondrous and resounding with a terrible roar, gleamed with unmatched strength and power.

त्रिशूलं विद्युताभासममोघं शत्रुनाशनम्। जाज्वल्यमानं वपुषा परमं तत्त्विषा युतम् ।। ३९.

His trident, shining like lightning, unfailing and destructive to enemies, blazed with supreme brilliance and was endowed with the highest energy.

असिश्चैवौजसां श्रेष्ठः शीतरश्मिः शशी तथा। तेजसा वपुषा कान्त्या देवेशस्य महात्मनः। शुशुभेऽभ्यधिकं तत्र वेद्यामग्निशिखा इव ।। ३९.

And his sword, best among the powerful, cool-rayed like the moon, with radiance, form, and splendor, belonging to the great-souled Lord of the gods, shone there exceedingly, like a flame upon the altar.
