दक्ष कन्या तवेयं वै जनयिष्यति सुव्रता। चतुरो वै मनून् पुत्रांश्चातुर्वर्ण्यकराञ्छुभान् ।। ३८.
Brahma said to Daksha, 'This daughter of yours, Suvrata, will give birth to four sons, the Manus, who will establish the four orders and be auspicious.'
ब्रह्मणो वचनं श्रुत्वा दक्षो धर्मो भवस्तदा। तां कन्यां मनसा जग्मुस्त्रयस्ते ब्रह्मणा सह ।। ३८.
Hearing Brahma's words, Daksha, Dharma, and Bhava, together with Brahma, mentally approached that maiden.
सत्याभिध्यायिनां तेषां सद्यः कन्या व्यजायत। सदृशानुरूपांस्तेषां चतुरो वै कुमारकान् ।। ३८.
Through their truthful contemplation, the maiden immediately gave birth to four sons, each resembling their respective fathers.
संसिद्धाः कार्यकरणे सम्भूतास्ते श्रियान्वितः। उपभोगसमर्थैश्च सद्योजातैः शरीरकैः ।। ३८.
Perfected in action and creation, they were born endowed with prosperity, possessing bodies capable of enjoyment and immediately manifest.
ते दृष्ट्वा तान् स्वयम्बुद्ध्वा ब्रह्मा व्याहाहिणस्तदा। संरब्धा वै व्यकर्षन्त मम पुत्रो ममेत्युत ।। ३८.
Seeing them and recognizing them as his own, Brahma then spoke, and they eagerly claimed, 'He is my son, he is mine.'
अभिध्यानान्मनोत्पन्नानूचुर्वै ते परस्परम्। यो यस्य वपुषा तुल्यो भजतां स तु तं सुतम् ।। ३८.
Born from their thoughts, they said to each other, 'Let each take as his son the one who matches him in form.'
यस्य यः सदृशश्चापि रूपे वीर्य च नामतः। तं गृह्णातु सुभद्रं वो वर्णतो यस्य यः समः ।। ३८.
Whichever one is similar in appearance, strength, and name, let each of you take that excellent one as your son, according to the similarity of order.
ध्रुवं रूपं पितुः पुत्रः सोऽनुरुध्यति सर्वदा। तस्मादात्मसमः पुत्रः पितुर्मातुश्च जायते ।। ३८.
A son always resembles his father in form; therefore, a son is born similar to both his father and mother.
एवं ते समयं कृत्वा सवर्णान् जगृहुः सुतान्। यस्मात् सवर्णास्तेषां वै ब्रह्मादीनां कुमारकाः ।। ३८.
Thus, having made this agreement, they took sons of their own order; therefore, the sons of Brahma and the others were of the same order.
सवर्णा मनवस्तस्मात् सवर्णत्वं हि ते यतः। मननान्माननाच्चैव तस्मात्ते मनवः स्मृताः ।। ३८.
Because the Manus were of the same order, their similarity is due to this; from their thinking and honoring, they are called Manus.
चाक्षुषस्यान्तरेऽतीते प्राप्ते वैवस्वतस्य ह। रुचेः प्रजापतेः पुत्रो रौच्यो नामाभवत्सुतः ।। ३८.
After the interval of Chakshusha and upon the arrival of Vaivasvata, Ruchi, the son of Prajapati, had a son named Rauchi.
भूत्यामुत्पादितो यस्तु भौत्यो नामाभवत्सुतः। वैवस्वतेऽन्तरे राजा द्वौ मनू तु विवस्वतोः ।। ३८.
The one born from Bhuti was called Bhauti; during the interval of Vaivasvata, there were two Manus, both sons of Vivasvat.
वैवस्वतो मनुर्यश्च सावर्णो यश्च विश्रुतः। ज्येष्ठः संज्ञासुतो विद्वान् मनुर्वैवस्वतः प्रभुः ।। ३८.
Vaivasvata Manu, renowned, and Savarni, were both sons of Vivasvat; the eldest, born by name, was the wise Manu Vaivasvata, the lord.
सवर्णायाः सुतश्चान्यः स्मृतो वैवस्वतो मनुः । सवर्णा मनवो ये च चत्वारस्तु महर्षिजाः ।। ३८.
Another son of Savarni is remembered as Vaivasvata Manu; the four Manus born from great sages are also Savarni.
तपसा सम्भृतात्मानः स्वेषु मन्वन्तरेषु वै। भविष्येषु भविष्यन्ति सर्वकार्यार्थसाधकाः ।। ३८.
Having perfected themselves through austerity, in their own Manvantaras, they will exist in the future, accomplishing all purposes.
प्रथमं मेरुसावर्णेर्दक्षपुत्रस्य वै मनोः। पुत्रा मरीचिगर्भाश्च सुशर्माणश्च ते त्रयः । सम्भूताश्च महात्मानः सर्वे वैवस्वतेऽन्तरे ।। ३८.
The first, Merusavarni, son of Daksha's Manu, and the three sons born from Marichi's lineage, Su Sharma and the others, all great souls, were born during the interval of Vaivasvata.
दक्षपुत्रस्य पुत्रास्ते रोहितस्य प्रजापतेः। भविष्यस्य भविष्यस्तु एकैको द्वादशो गणः ।। ३८.
The sons of Daksha's son, Rohita, the lord of creatures, are each a group of twelve, and there will be future ones as well.
ऐश्वर्यसंग्राहो राहो बाहुवशस्तथैव च। पारा द्वादश विज्ञेया उत्तरांस्तु निबोधत ।। ३८.
Aiśvaryasaṃgrāha, Rāha, Bāhuvaśa, and Pārā are twelve to be known; now listen to the names of the northern ones.
वाजियो वाजिजिच्चैव प्रभृतिश्च ककुद्यथ। दधिक्रावायपक्वाश्च प्रणीतो विजयो मधुः ।। ३८.
Vājīya, Vājijic, Prabhṛti, Kakud, Dadhikrāva, Āyapakva, Praṇīta, Vijaya, and Madhu are among them.
तेजस्मान्नथवो द्वौ तु द्वादशैते मरीचयः। सुशर्म्माणस्तु वक्ष्यामि नामतस्तु निबोधत ।। ३८.
From Tejasmān, two leaders arise; these twelve are the Marīcayas. I will now speak of the Suśarmāṇas; listen to their names.
वर्णस्तथाप्यङ्गविश्वौ मुरण्यो व्रजनो मतः। अमितो द्रवकेतुश्च जम्भोस्थाजस्रशक्रकाः ।। ३८.
Varṇa, Apyaṅga, Viśva, Muraṇya, Vrajana, Amita, Dravaketu, Jambhosthā, Ajasra, and Śakraka are considered their names.
सुनेमिर्द्युतपाश्चैव सुशर्म्माणः प्रकीर्त्तिताः। तेषामिन्द्रस्तदा भाव्यो ह्यद्भुतो नाम नामतः ।। ३८.
Sunemi and Dyutapā are also named among the Suśarmāṇas. Their Indra will be called Adbhuta by name.
स्कन्दः सोमप्रतीकाशः कार्तिकेयस्तु पावकः। माघातिथिश्च पौलस्त्यो वसुः काश्यप एव च ।। ३८.
Skanda, resembling Soma, Kārtikeya, Pāvaka, Māghātithi, Paulastya, Vasu, and Kāśyapa are included.
ज्योतिष्मान् भार्गवश्चैव द्युतिमानङ्गिरास्तथा। वसितश्चैव वासिष्ठ आत्रेयो हव्यवाहनः ।। ३८.
Jyotiṣmān, Bhārgava, Dyutimān, Aṅgiras, Vasita, Vāsiṣṭha, Ātreya, and Havyavāhana are also named.
सुतपाः पौलवश्चैव सप्तैते रोहितान्तरे। धृतिकेतुदीप्तिकेतुशापहस्ता निरामयः ।। ३८.
Sutapā and Paulava, these seven are within Rohita's line: Dhṛtiketudīptiketu, Śāpahasta, and Nirāmaya.
पृथुश्रवास्तथा नाको भूरिद्युम्नो बृहद्रथः। प्रथमस्य तु सावर्णेर्नव पुत्राः प्रकीर्तिताः ।। ३८.
Pṛthuśravas, Nāka, Bhūridyumna, Bṛhadratha—these are the nine sons named for the first Sāvarṇi.
दशमे त्वथ पर्याये धर्मपुत्रस्य वै मनोः। द्वितीयस्य तु सावर्णेर्भाव्यस्यैवान्तरे मनोः ।। ३८.
In the tenth cycle, the sons of Dharma's son, Manu; in the second Sāvarṇi, and in the interval of the future Manu.
सुखामना विरुद्धाश्च द्वावेव तु गणौ स्मृतौ। त्विषिवन्तश्च ते सर्वे शतसङ्ख्याश्च ते समाः ।। ३८.
Sukhāmanā and Viruddha are the two groups remembered; all of them are Tviṣivanta, numbering a hundred.
प्राणा नायच्छतः प्रोक्त ऋषिभिः पुरुषेषु वै। देवास्ते वै भविष्यन्ति धर्मपुत्रस्य वै मनोः ।। ३८.
The Prāṇas, who do not lead, are spoken of by the sages among men; these will be the gods of Dharma's son, Manu.
तेषामिन्द्रस्तथा विद्वान् भविष्यः शान्तिरुच्यते। हविष्मान् पौलहः श्रीमान् सुकीर्तिश्चापि भार्गवः ।। ३८.
Among them, Indra, the wise, will be called Bhaviṣya and Śānti; Haviṣmān, Paulaha, Śrīmān, and Sukīrti, also Bhārgava.
