Those Merusāvarṇi, whom you have seen with divine vision, are the grandsons of Dakṣa, the sons of his beloved daughter.
Endowed with great asceticism and mighty energy upon Mount Meru, they were created by Brahmā and others, as well as by the wise Dakṣa.
Having attained the Maharloka, they will reside on Meru in the future; due to their great nature, they were previously born in the Cākṣuṣa interval.
The sages said: How were sons born by Dakṣa in his own daughter, and likewise by Brahmā and the great-souled Dharma?
Sūta said: Now I shall speak of the future Sāvarṇa Manus, their birth and power, after offering reverence to Pracetasa.
When the Vaivasvata is completed and a little remains of the Cākṣuṣa, the Manus of the future and coming interval are born.
Those Manus, grandsons of Prācetasa Dakṣa, are known as Sāvarṇa by name; five and four are born from supreme sages.
Sāvarṇa is the son of Saṃjñā, and likewise Vaivasvata; the eldest, named Manu, is the lord Vaivasvata, born of Saṃjñā.
When the Vaivasvata interval arrives, their auspicious birth occurs; these fourteen Manus are renowned, increasers of fame.
In the Vedas, Śruti, and Purāṇas, all these powerful ones are mentioned; they are the lords of all creatures, the rulers of all beings.
By them, this entire earth, with its seven continents and mountains, is protected for a full thousand ages by the kings of men.
Their progeny and asceticism will be described in detail among them; these fourteen creations, beginning with Svāyambhuva, are to be known.
Within the jurisdiction of each Manvantara, they exist again and again; when their authority ends, they take refuge in Maharloka.
Of those who have passed, eight and six are the others; among the former and present, this peace belongs to the lord Vaivasvata.
I shall declare those who remain, together with the divine sages and Dānavas, along with the creation of progeny, all those future twice-born.
Through the creation of Vaivasvata, their details are to be known; none are less or more, for all are from Vivasvat.
Because of repetition and abundance, I will not elaborate on them; in the future Manvantaras and likewise among the beings.
In each lineage, the creations will be described further in detail; for the sake of those who remain, their particulars will be given in order.
Daksha's daughter, renowned as Dharmishtha, steadfast in virtue and vows, was the best among all remaining maidens, devoted to righteousness. Her father took her and went to the presence of Brahma.
Vairaja, seated near Dharma and Bhava, who were close to Dharma, was addressed by Brahma in the presence of Daksha.
Brahma said to Daksha, 'This daughter of yours, Suvrata, will give birth to four sons, the Manus, who will establish the four orders and be auspicious.'
Hearing Brahma's words, Daksha, Dharma, and Bhava, together with Brahma, mentally approached that maiden.
Through their truthful contemplation, the maiden immediately gave birth to four sons, each resembling their respective fathers.
Perfected in action and creation, they were born endowed with prosperity, possessing bodies capable of enjoyment and immediately manifest.
Seeing them and recognizing them as his own, Brahma then spoke, and they eagerly claimed, 'He is my son, he is mine.'
Born from their thoughts, they said to each other, 'Let each take as his son the one who matches him in form.'
Whichever one is similar in appearance, strength, and name, let each of you take that excellent one as your son, according to the similarity of order.
A son always resembles his father in form; therefore, a son is born similar to both his father and mother.
Thus, having made this agreement, they took sons of their own order; therefore, the sons of Brahma and the others were of the same order.
Because the Manus were of the same order, their similarity is due to this; from their thinking and honoring, they are called Manus.
