Vayu Purana

अष्टाविंशद्युगाख्यास्तु गता वैवस्वतेऽन्तरे। एता राजर्षिभिः सार्द्धं शिष्टा यास्ता निबोधत ।। ३७.

Twenty-eight yugas have passed in the Vaivasvata interval; these, along with the royal sages, have been described—now hear of those that remain.

चत्वारिंशच्च ये चैव भविष्याः सह राजभिः। युगाख्यानां विशिष्टास्तु ततो वैवस्वतक्षये ।। ३७.

And forty more, together with their kings, are yet to come; these yugas are distinguished until the end of the Vaivasvata period.

एतद्वः कथितं सर्व्वं समासव्यासयोगतः। पुनरुक्तं बहुत्वाच्च न शक्यन्तु युगैः सह ।। ३७.

All this has been told to you, both in summary and in detail; because of their multitude, it is not possible to recount them all, even with the yugas.

एते ययातिपुत्राणां पञ्चविंशा विशां हिताः। कीर्त्तिताश्चामिता ये मे लोकान् वै धारयन्त्युत ।। ३७.

These twenty-five sons of Yayati, renowned among peoples, have been mentioned; they, indeed, uphold the worlds for me.

लभते च वरेण्यञ्च दुर्लभानिह लौकिकान्। आयुः कीर्त्तिं धनं पुत्रान् स्वर्गं चानन्त्यमश्नुते ।। ३७.

One attains desirable and rare worldly rewards: long life, fame, wealth, sons, and endless heaven.

धारणाच्छ्रवणाच्चैव ते लोकान् धारयन्त्युत। इत्येष वो मयो पादस्तृतीयः कथितो द्विजाः। विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्वी च किम्भूयो वर्त्तयाम्यहम् ।। ३७.

By reciting and hearing this, they indeed uphold the worlds; thus, O twice-born, I have told you the third section in order and in detail—what more shall I relate?

श्रुत्वा पादं तृतीयन्तु क्रान्तं सूतेन धीमता। ततश्चतुर्थं पप्रच्छुः पादं वै ऋषिसत्तमाः ।। ३८.

Having heard the third section recited by the wise Suta, the foremost sages then inquired about the fourth section.

ऋषय ऊचुः।। पादः क्रान्तस्तृतीयोऽयमनुषङ्गेण यस्त्वया। चतुर्थं विस्तरात्पादं संहारं परिकीर्त्तय ।। ३८.

The sages said: The third section has been recounted by you in sequence; now, narrate in detail the fourth section concerning dissolution.

मन्वन्तराणि सर्वाणि पूर्वाण्येवापरैः सह। सप्तर्षीणामथैतेषां साम्प्रतस्यान्तरे मनोः ।। ३८.

All the previous Manvantaras, together with the later ones, and the Saptarshis, as well as those of the present interval of Manu—

विस्तरावयवञ्चैव निसर्गस्य महात्मनः। विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्या च सर्वमेव ब्रवीहि मे ।। ३८.

And the detailed aspects of the great nature, its components—tell me everything in order and in detail.

सूत उवाच।। भवतां कथयिष्यामि सर्वमेतद्यथातथम्। पादं त्विमं ससंहारं चतुर्थं मुनिसत्तमाः ।। ३८.

Suta said: I shall relate all this to you exactly as it is, O best of sages, including this fourth section with dissolution.

मनोर्वैवस्वतस्येमं सांप्रतस्य महात्मनः। विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्या च निसर्गं श्रृणुत द्विजाः ।। ३८.

Now, O twice-born, listen in detail and in order to the account of the present Manu, Vaivasvata, the great-souled one.

मन्वन्तराणां संक्षेपं भविष्यैः सह सप्तभिः। प्रलयञ्चैव लोकानां ब्रुवतो मे निबोधत ।। ३८.

Hear from me the summary of the Manvantaras, along with the seven future ones, and also the dissolution of the worlds.

एतान्युक्तानि वै सम्यक् सप्तसप्तसु वै मया। मन्वन्तराणि संक्षेपाच्छृणुतानागतानि मे ।। ३८.

These have been properly described by me in groups of seven; now listen to the summary of the Manvantaras yet to come.

सावर्णस्य प्रवक्ष्यामि मनोर्वैवस्वतस्य ह। भविष्यस्य भविष्यन्ति समासात्तु निबोधत ।। ३८.

I shall declare the coming Manvantara of Sāvarṇi, the son of Vaivasvata; listen in brief to what will be.

अनागताश्च सप्तैव स्मृतास्त्विह महर्षयः। कौशिको गातवश्चैव जामदग्न्यश्च भार्गवः ।। ३८.

Here, the seven great sages who are yet to come are remembered: Kauśika, Gālava, Jāmadagnya Bhārgava,

द्वैपायनो वसिष्ठश्च कृपः शारद्वतस्तथा। आत्रेयो दीप्तिमांश्चैव ऋष्यश्रृङ्गस्तु काश्यपः ।। ३८.

Dvaipāyana, Vasiṣṭha, Kṛpa the son of Śāradvat, Ātreya the radiant, and Ṛṣyaśṛṅga Kāśyapa.

भारद्वाजस्तथा द्रौणिरश्वत्थामा महायशाः। एते सप्त महात्मानो भविष्याः परमर्षयः ।। ३८.

Bhāradvāja and Drauṇi, the illustrious Aśvatthāman—these seven great souls will be the eminent seers of the future.

सुतपा श्चामिताभाश्च सुखाश्चैव गणास्त्रयः। तेषां गणास्तु देवानां एकैको विंशकः स्मृतः ।। ३८.

Sutapas, Amitābhās, and Sukhās—these three groups of gods; each group of the gods is said to be twenty in number.

नामतस्तु प्रवक्ष्यामि निबोधध्वं समाहिताः। रितस्तपश्च शुक्रश्च द्युतिर्ज्योतिः प्रभाकरौ ।। ३८.

Now I shall declare their names; listen attentively: Ṛta, Tapas, Śukra, Dyuti, Jyotis, Prabhākara,

प्रभासो भासकृद्धर्म्मस्तेजोरश्मिऋतुर्विराट्। अर्चिष्मान् द्योतनो भानुर्यशकीर्त्तिर्बुधो धृतिः। विंशतिः सुतपा ह्येते नामभिः परिकीर्तिताः ।। ३८.

Prabhāsa, Bhāsakṛt, Dharma, Tejas, Raśmi, Ṛtu, Virāṭ, Arciṣmān, Dyotana, Bhānu, Yaśa, Kīrti, Budha, Dhṛti—these twenty are renowned as the Sutapas by name.

प्रभुर्विभुर्विभासश्च जेता हन्ताऽरिहा रितुः। सुमतिः प्रमतिर्दीप्तिः समाख्यातो महोमहान् ।। ३८.

Prabhu, Vibhu, Vibhāsa, Jetā, Hantā, Arihā, Ṛtu, Sumati, Pramati, Dīpti—these are proclaimed as the great and mighty ones.

देहो मुनिर्नयो ज्येष्ठः समः सत्यश्च विश्रुतः। इत्येते ह्यमिताभास्तु विंशतिः परिकीर्त्तिताः ।। ३८.

Deha, Muni, Naya, Jyeṣṭha, Sama, Satya, and Viśruta—thus these twenty Amitābhās are named.

दमो दाता विदः सोमो वित्तवैद्यौ यमो निधिः। होमं हव्यं हुतं दानं देयं दाता तपः शमः ।। ३८.

Dama, Dātā, Vida, Soma, Vittavid, Yama, Nidhi, Homa, Havya, Huta, Dāna, Deya, Dātā, Tapas, Śama—

ध्रुवं स्थानं विधानञ्च नियमश्चेति विंशतिः। मुख्या ह्येते समाख्याताः सावर्णे प्रथमेऽन्तरे ।। ३८.

Dhruva, Sthāna, Vidhāna, Niyama—these twenty are the chief ones declared in the first Sāvarṇi Manvantara.

मारीचस्यैव ते पुत्राः कश्यपस्य महात्मनः। साम्प्रतस्य भविष्यन्ति सावर्णस्यान्तरे मनोः ।। ३८.

They are the sons of Mārīca, of the great-souled Kaśyapa; in the coming Sāvarṇi Manvantara, they will be present.

तेषामिन्द्रो भविष्यस्तु बलिर्वैरोचनः पुरा। वीरवांश्चावरीयांश्च निर्मोहः सत्यवाक् कृती ।। ३८.

Among them, the Indra will be Bali, the son of Virocana, renowned of old, heroic, powerful, unwavering, truthful, and accomplished.

चरिष्णुराज्यो विष्णुश्च वाचः सुमतिरेव च। सावर्णस्य मनोः पुत्रा भविष्यन्ति नवैव तु ।। ३८.

Cariṣṇu, Ājya, Viṣṇu, Vāc, Sumati—these will be the nine sons of Manu Sāvarṇi.

नव चान्येषु वक्ष्यामि सावर्णेश्चान्तरेषु वै। सावर्णमनवश्चान्ये भविष्या ब्रह्मणः सुताः ।। ३८.

I shall also declare nine others in the other Sāvarṇi Manvantaras; the other Sāvarṇi Manus will be the sons of Brahmā.
