बहुमन्याः प्रजाहीनाः शौचाचारविवर्जिताः। एवं भविष्यन्ति नरास्तदाधर्म्मे व्यवस्थिताः ।। ३७.
Highly regarded, but bereft of people, lacking purity and proper conduct, thus men will exist, established in unrighteousness.
हीनाद्धीनांस्तथा धर्म्मान् प्रजाः समनुवर्त्तते। आयुस्तदा त्रयोविंशं न कश्चिदतिवर्त्तते ।। ३७.
The people will follow inferior and deficient dharmas; at that time, no one will live beyond twenty-three years.
दुर्बला विषयग्लाना जरया संपरिप्लुताः। पत्रमूलफलाहाराश्चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बराः ।। ३७.
Weak, exhausted by sense pleasures, overwhelmed by old age, subsisting on leaves, roots, and fruits, clad in bark and black antelope skins.
वृत्त्यर्थमभिलिप्सन्तश्चरिष्यन्ति वसुन्धराम्। एतत्कालमनुप्राप्ताः प्रजाः कलियुगान्तके ।। ३७.
Seeking livelihood, they will wander the earth; these people, arriving at this time, will be at the end of the Kali age.
क्षीणे कलियुगे तस्मिन् दिव्ये वर्षसहस्रके। निःशेषास्तु भविष्यन्ति सार्द्धं कलियुगेन तु। ससन्ध्यांशे तु निःशेषे कृतं वै प्रतिपत्स्यते ।। ३७.
When that Kali age is depleted, in the divine thousand years, all will perish together with the Kali age; when its twilight portion is completely ended, the Krita age will be restored.
यदा चन्द्रश्च सूर्य्यश्च तथा तिष्यबृहस्पती। एकरात्रे भरिष्यन्ति तदा कृतयुगं भवेत् ।। ३७.
When the moon, the sun, and Tishya-Brihaspati occupy the same night, then the Krita age will arise.
एष वंशक्रमः कृत्स्नं कीर्तितो वो यथाक्रमम्। अतीता वर्त्तमानाश्च तथैवानागताश्च ये ।। ३७.
This entire lineage has been recounted to you in order, those past, present, and likewise those yet to come.
महादेवाभिषेकात्तु जन्म यावत्परिक्षितः। एतद्वर्षसहस्रन्तु ज्ञेयं पञ्चादशदुत्तरम् ।। ३७.
From the consecration of Mahadeva up to the birth of Parikshit, this thousand years, with fifteen added, should be known.
प्रमाणं वै तथा चोक्तं महापद्मान्तरं च यत्। अन्तरं तच्छतान्यष्टौ षट्त्रिंशच्च समाः स्मृताः ।। ३७.
The measure has thus been stated, as well as the interval of the Mahāpadma; that interval is reckoned as one hundred and eighty-six years.
एतत्कालान्तरं भाव्या अन्ध्रान्ता ये प्रकीर्त्तिताः। भविष्यैस्तत्र सङ्ख्याताः पुराणज्ञैः श्रुतर्षिभिः ।। ३७.
This span of time is to be considered for those called the Andhra-ending ones; their numbers have been declared by the sages who know the Purāṇas.
सप्तर्षयस्तदा प्राहुः प्रतीपे राज्ञि वै शतम्। सप्तविंशैः शतैर्भाव्या अन्ध्राणां ते त्वया पुनः ।। ३७.
At that time, the Seven Sages spoke of a hundred years during the reign of Pratīpa; and for the Andhras, you should again count with twenty-seven hundreds.
सप्तविंशतिपर्य्यन्ते कृत्स्ने नक्षत्रमण्डले। सप्तर्षयस्तु तिष्ठन्ति पर्यायेण शतं शतम्। सप्तर्षीणां युगं ह्येतद्दिव्यया सङ्ख्यया स्मृतम् ।। ३७.
At the end of twenty-seven, throughout the entire circle of stars, the Seven Sages remain, each cycle being a hundred years; this is called the era of the Seven Sages, counted in divine reckoning.
सा सा दिव्या स्मृता षष्टिर्दिव्याह्नाश्चैव सप्तभिः । तेभ्यः प्रवर्त्तते कालो दिव्यः सप्तर्षिभिस्तु तैः ।। ३७.
That divine era is remembered as sixty, along with seven divine days; from them, the divine time proceeds, governed by those Seven Sages.
सप्तर्षीणान्तु ये पूर्वा दृश्यन्ते उत्तरादिशि। ततो मध्येन च क्षेत्रं दृश्यते यत्समं दिवि ।। ३७.
The earlier Seven Sages are seen in the northern direction; then, in the middle, the region is seen which is equal in the sky.
तेन सप्तर्षयो युक्ता ज्ञेया व्योम्नि शतं समाः। नक्षत्राणामृषीणाञ्च योगस्यैतन्निदर्शनम् ।। ३७.
With that, the Seven Sages are to be known as united in the sky for a hundred years; this is the indication of the conjunction of stars and sages.
सप्तर्षयो मघायुक्ताः काले पारिक्षिते शतम्। अन्ध्रांशे स चतुर्व्विशे भविष्यन्ति मते मम ।। ३७.
The Seven Sages, joined with Maghā, remain for a hundred years in the measured time; in the Andhra portion, in the twenty-fourth, they will be, according to my opinion.
इमास्तदा तु प्रकृतिर्व्यापत्स्यन्ति प्रजा भृशम्। अनृतोपहताः सर्वा धर्मतः कामतोऽर्थतः ।। ३७.
Then, indeed, the nature of these will be greatly corrupted among the people; all will be afflicted by falsehood, in righteousness, desire, and wealth.
श्रौतस्मार्त्ते प्रशिथिले धर्मे वर्णाश्रमे तदा। शङ्करं दुर्बलात्मानः प्रतिपत्स्यन्ति मोहिताः ।। ३७.
When the Vedic and customary law is weakened, in the duties of caste and stage of life, the weak-minded, deluded, will adopt the doctrine of Śaṅkara.
संसक्ताश्च भविष्यन्ति शूद्राः सार्द्धं द्विजातिभिः। ब्राह्मणाः शूद्रयष्टारः शूद्रा वै मन्त्रयोनयः ।। ३७.
The Śūdras will become associated with the twice-born; Brāhmaṇas will perform sacrifices for Śūdras, and Śūdras will be the source of mantras.
उपस्थास्यन्ति तान् विप्रास्तदा वै वृत्तिलिप्सवः । लवं लवं भ्रस्यमानाः प्रजाः सर्वाः क्रमेण तु ।। ३७.
At that time, the Brāhmaṇas will approach them, seeking livelihood; all people will gradually fall, bit by bit.
क्षयमेव गमिष्यन्ति क्षीणशेषा युगक्षये। यस्मिन् कृष्णो दिवं यातस्तस्मिन्नेव तदा दिने ।। ३७.
They will proceed to destruction, with only a diminished remnant at the end of the age; on the day when Kṛṣṇa ascended to heaven, at that very time.
प्रतिपन्नः कलियुगस्तस्य सङ्ख्यां निबोधत। सहस्राणां शतानीह त्रीणि मानुषसङ्ख्यया। षष्टिं चैव सहस्राणि वर्षाणामुच्यते कलिः ।। ३७.
The Kali age has commenced; understand its reckoning: here, three hundred thousand in human count, and sixty thousand years are said to be Kali.
दिव्ये वर्षसहस्रन्तु तत्सन्ध्यांशं प्रकीर्त्तितम्। निःशेषे च तदा तस्मिन् कृतं वै प्रतिपत्स्यते ।। ३७.
A thousand divine years is declared as its twilight portion; when that is completely finished, the Kṛta age will begin again.
ऐल इक्ष्वाकुवंशश्च सह भेदैः प्रकीर्त्तितौ। इक्ष्वाकोस्तु स्मृतः क्षत्रः सुमित्रान्तं विवस्वतः ।। ३७.
Aila and the Ikṣvāku lineage, along with their branches, are mentioned; the Kṣatriya line of Ikṣvāku is remembered as extending to Sumitra, son of Vivasvat.
ऐलं क्षत्रं क्षेमकान्तं सोमवंशविदो विदुः। एते विवस्वतः पुत्राः कीर्त्तिताः कीर्त्तिवर्द्धनाः ।। ३७.
The Aila Kṣatriya line is known as ending with Kṣemaka, by those who know the Soma lineage; these sons of Vivasvat are named, who increase fame.
अतीता वर्त्तमानाश्च तथैवानागताश्च ये। ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश्चैवान्वये स्मृताः ।। ३७.
Those who are past, present, and likewise those yet to come—Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras—are remembered in succession.
युगे युगे महात्मानः समतीताः सहस्रशः। बहुत्वान्नामधेयानां परिसंख्या कुले कुले ।। ३७.
In every age, countless great souls have passed away; because of the multitude of their names, their enumeration is given lineage by lineage.
पुनरुक्ता बहुत्वाच्च न मया परिकीर्त्तिता। वैवस्वतेऽन्तरे ह्यस्मिन् निमिवंशः समाप्यते ।। ३७.
Because of their repetition and great number, I have not recounted them all; in this current Vaivasvata Manvantara, the line of Nimi comes to an end.
एवायान्तु युगाख्यायां यतः क्षत्रं प्रपत्स्यते । तथा हि कथयिष्यामि गदतो मे निबोधत ।। ३७.
Now, regarding the account of the ages, from which the Kshatriya order will arise, I shall thus narrate; listen as I speak.
देवापिः पौरवो राजा इक्ष्वाकोश्चैव यो मतः। महायोगबलोपेतः कलापग्राममास्थितः ।। ३७.
Devāpi, the Paurava king, and Ikshvāku, renowned and endowed with great yogic power, have taken up residence in the village of Kalāpa.
