Vayu Purana

उदायी भविता तस्मात्त्रयस्त्रिंशत्समा नृपः। स वै पुरवरं राजा पृथिव्यां कुसुमाह्वयम्। गङ्गाया दक्षिणे कूले चतुर्थेऽब्दे करिष्यति ।। ३७.

From him, Udāyin will be king for thirty-three years; that king will found the excellent city called Kusumapura on the southern bank of the Ganga in the fourth year.

द्वाचत्वारिंशत्समा भाव्यो राजा वै नन्दिवर्द्धनः। चत्वारिंशत्त्रयञ्चैव महा नन्दी भविष्यति ।। ३७.

King Nandivardhana will reign for forty-two years; and Mahānandī will rule for forty-three years.

इत्येते भवितारौ वै शैशुनाका नृपा दश। अतानि त्रीणि वर्षाणि द्विषष्ट्यभ्यधिकानि तु ।। ३७.

Thus, these ten kings will be the Shishunakas; their reigns together will last for sixty-two years and three more.

शैशुनाका भविष्यन्ति तावत्कालं नृपाः परे। एतैः सार्द्धं भविष्यंति राजानः क्षत्रबान्धवाः ।। ३७.

The Shishunaka kings will rule for that length of time; along with them, other royal kinsmen will also become kings.

ऐक्ष्वाकवाश्चतुर्विंशत्पाञ्चालाः पञ्चविंशतिः। कालकास्तु चतुर्व्विंशच्चतुर्व्विंशत्तु हैहयाः ।। ३७.

There will be twenty-four Ikshvakus, twenty-five Panchalas, twenty-four Kalakas, and twenty-four Haihayas.

द्वात्रिंशद्वै कलिङ्गास्तु पञ्चविंशत्तथा शकाः। कुरवश्चापि षड्विंशदष्टाविंशति मैथिलाः ।। ३७.

There will be thirty-two Kalingas, twenty-five Shakas, twenty-six Kurus, and twenty-eight Maithilas.

शूरसे नास्त्रयोविंशद्वीतिहोत्राश्च विंशतिः। तुल्यकालं भविष्यन्ति सर्व एव महीक्षितः ।। ३७.

There will be twenty-three Shurasenas and twenty Vītahotras; all these kings will exist at the same time.

महानन्दिसुतश्चापि शूद्रायां कालसंवृतः। उत्पत्स्यते महापद्मः सर्वक्षत्रान्तरे नृपः ।। ३७.

And Mahāpadma, son of Mahānandi, will be born of a Śūdra woman, at the destined time, as a king who will bring an end to all Kṣatriya lineages.

ततःप्रभृति राजानो भविष्याः शूद्रयोनयः। एकराट् स महापद्म एकच्छत्रो भविष्यति ।। ३७.

From then on, kings will arise from Śūdra families; Mahāpadma alone will be sovereign, ruling under a single umbrella.

अष्टा विंशतिवर्षाणि पृथिवीं पालयिष्यति। सर्वक्षत्रहृतोद्धृत्य भाविनोऽर्थस्य वै बलात् ।। ३७.

He will rule the earth for twenty-eight years, having forcefully uprooted all the Kṣatriyas for the sake of future wealth.

सहस्रास्तत्सुता ह्यष्टौ समा द्वादश ते नृपाः ३७.

His sons will be eight in number, and together they will reign for twelve years as kings.

उद्धरिष्यति तान् सर्वान् कौटिल्यो वै द्विरष्टभिः। भुक्त्वा महीं वर्षशतं नन्देन्दुः स भविष्यति ।। ३७.

Kauṭilya will overthrow all of them with sixteen men; after enjoying the earth for a hundred years, the Nanda line will come to an end.

चन्द्रगुप्तं नृपं राज्ये कौटिल्यः स्थापयिष्यति। चतुर्विंशत्समा राजा चन्द्रगुप्तो भविष्यति ।। ३७.

Kauṭilya will install Candragupta as king; Candragupta will rule as king for twenty-four years.

भविता भद्र सारस्तु पञ्चविंशत्समा नृपः। षड्विंशत्तु समा राजा ह्यशोको भविता नृषु ।। ३७.

Then Bhadrasāra will be king for twenty-five years; after him, Aśoka will rule among men for twenty-six years.

तस्य पुत्रः कुनालस्तु वर्षाण्यष्टौ भविष्यति। कुनाल सूनुरष्टौ च भोक्ता वै बन्धुपालितः ।। ३७.

His son Kunāla will reign for eight years; Kunāla’s son, Bandhupālita, will also rule for eight years.

बन्धुपालितदायादो दशमानीन्द्रपालितः। भविता सप्तवर्षाणि देववर्म्मा नराधिपः ।। ३७.

Bandhupālita’s heir, Indrapālita, will rule for ten years; Devavarman will be king for seven years.

राजा शतधरश्चाष्टौ तस्य पुत्रो भविष्यति। बृहदश्वश्च वर्षाणि सप्त वै भविता नृपः ।। ३७.

King Śatadhara will rule for eight years, and his son Bṛhadaśva will be king for seven years.

इत्येते नव भूपा ये भोक्ष्यन्ति च वसुन्धराम्। सप्तत्रिंशच्छतं पूर्णं तेभ्यस्तु गौर्भविष्यति ।। ३७.

Thus, these nine kings will enjoy the earth; after their complete reign of three hundred and thirty-seven years, the line will end.

पुष्पमित्रस्तु सेनानीरुद्धृत्य वै बृहद्रथम्। कारयिष्यति वै राज्यं समाः षष्टिं सदैव तु ।। ३७.

Puṣyamitra, the commander, after overthrowing Bṛhadratha, will establish his own rule for sixty years.

पुष्पमित्रसुताश्चाष्टौ भविष्यन्ति समा नृपाः। भविता चापि तज्ज्येष्ठः सप्तवर्षाणि वै ततः ।। ३७.

Puṣyamitra’s sons will be eight, and they will be kings in turn; the eldest among them will rule for seven years.

वसुमित्रः सुतो भाव्यो दशवर्षाणि पार्थिवः। ततो ध्रुकः समा द्वे तु भविष्यति सुतश्च वै ।। ३७.

His son Vasumitra will be king for ten years; then Dhruka, his son, will rule for two years.

भविष्यन्ति समास्तस्मात्तिस्र एव पुलिन्दकाः। राजा घोषसुतश्चापि वर्षाणि भविता त्रयः ।। ३७.

After him, three Pulindaka kings will reign for three years; Ghoṣa’s son will be king for three years.

ततो वै विक्रमित्रस्तु समा राजा ततः पुनः। द्वात्रिंशद्भविता चापि समा भागवतो नृपः ।। ३७.

Then Vikramitra will be king, and after him, Bhāgavata will reign for thirty-two years.

भविष्यति सुतस्तस्य क्षेमभूमिः समा दश। दशैते तुङ्गराजानो भोक्ष्यन्तीमां वसुन्धरम् ।। ३७.

His son Kṣemabhūmi will rule for ten years; these ten Tuṅga kings will enjoy the earth.

शतं पूर्णं दश द्वे च तेभ्यः किं वा गमिष्यति। अपार्थिवसुदेवन्तु बाल्याद्व्यसनिनं नृपम् ।। ३७.

A full one hundred and twelve years will pass; after them, a king named Aparthivasudeva, addicted to childish vices, will come.

देवभूमिस्ततोऽन्यश्च श्रृङ्गेषु भविता नृपः। भविष्यति समा राजा नव कण्ठायनस्तु सः ।। ३७.

After the land of the gods, another king will arise in the Śṛṅga region; he will rule for nine years, and his name will be Kaṇṭhāyana.

भूतिमित्रः सुतस्तस्य चतुर्व्विंशद्भविष्यति। भविता द्वादश समास्तस्मान्नारायणो नृपः ।। ३७.

His son will be Bhūtimitra, who will reign for twenty-four years; after him, Nārāyaṇa will be king for twelve years.

सुशर्म्मा तत्सुतश्चापि भविष्यति समा दश। चतुरस्तुङ्गकृत्यास्ते नृपाः कण्ठायना द्विजाः ।। ३७.

Suśarman, his son, will rule for ten years; four Kaṇṭhāyana kings, all brāhmaṇas, will accomplish great deeds.

भाव्याः प्रणतसामन्ताश्चत्वारिंशच्च पञ्च च। तेषां पर्य्यायकाले तु तरन्धा तु भविष्यति ।। ३७.

Forty-five vassals devoted to them will arise; at the end of their time, Tarandhā will become king.
