Vayu Purana

दण्डपाणेर्निरामित्रे निरामित्राच्च क्षेमकः। पञ्चविंशनृपा ह्येते भविष्याः पूर्ववंशजाः ।। ३७.

From Dandapani will come Niramitra, and from Niramitra, Kshemaka; these twenty-five kings will be born in the ancient line.

अत्रानुवंशश्लोकोऽयं गीतो विप्रैः पुराविदैः। ब्रह्मक्षत्रस्य यो योनिर्वंशो देवर्षिसत्कृतः ।। ३७.

Here is a verse about the lineage, sung by the wise who know the ancient lore: 'The family, honored by the divine sages, is the source of both Brahmins and Kshatriyas.'

क्षेमकं प्राप्य राजानं संस्थां प्राप्स्यति वै कलौ। इत्येष पौरवो वंशो यथावदनुकीर्त्तितः ।। ३७.

When the kingship reaches Kshemaka, the dynasty will come to an end in the Kali age; thus, the Paurava line has been properly recounted.

धीमतः पाण्डुपुत्रस्य ह्यर्जुनस्य महात्मनः। अत ऊर्द्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि इक्ष्वाकूणां महात्मनाम् ।। ३७.

Now, I shall narrate the line of the great-souled Ikshvakus, after the wise Pandu's son, the noble Arjuna.

बृहद्रथस्य दायादो वीरो राजा बृहत्क्षयः । ततः क्षयः सुतस्तस्य वत्सव्यूहस्ततः क्षयात् ।। ३७.

The heir of Brihadratha will be the valiant king Brihatkshaya; his son will be Kshaya, and from Kshaya will come Vatsavyuha.

वत्सव्यूहात्प्रतिव्यूहस्तस्य पुत्रो दिवाकरः। यश्च सांप्रतमध्यास्त अयोध्यां नगरीं नृपः ।। ३७.

From Vatsavyuha will come Prativyuha, whose son will be Divakara, the king who now rules the city of Ayodhya.

दिवाकरस्य भविता सहदेवो महायशाः। सहदेवस्य दायादो बृहदश्वो भविष्यति ।। ३७.

Divakara's son will be the illustrious Sahadeva; Sahadeva's heir will be Brihadashva.

तस्य भानुरथो भाव्यः प्रतीताश्वश्च तत्सुतः। प्रतीताश्वसुतश्चापि सुप्रतीतो भविष्यति ।। ३७.

His son will be Bhanuratha, and Bhanuratha's son will be Pratitashva; Pratitashva's son will be Supratita.

सहदेवः सुतस्तस्य सुनक्षत्रश्च तत्सुतः ।। ३७.

Sahadeva will be his son, and Sunakshatra will be the son of Sahadeva.

किन्नरस्तु सुनक्षत्राद्भविष्यति परंतपः। भविता चान्तरिक्षस्तु किन्नरस्य सुतो महान् ।। ३७.

From Sunakshatra will come Kinnara, a subduer of foes; and Kinnara's great son will be Antariksha.

अन्तरिक्षात्सुपर्णस्तु सुपर्णाच्चाप्यमित्रजित्। पुत्रस्तस्य भरद्वाजो धर्मी तस्य सुतः स्मृतः। पुत्रः कृतञ्जयो नाम धर्मिणः स भविष्यति। कृतञ्जयसुतो व्रातो तस्य पुत्रो रणञ्जयः ।। ३७.

From Antariksha will be Suparna, and from Suparna, Amitrajit; his son will be Bharadvaja, known as Dharmi; Dharmi's son will be named Kritanjaya; Kritanjaya's son will be Vrata, and his son will be Rananjaya.

भविता सञ्जयश्चापि वीरो राजा रणञ्जयात्। सञ्जयस्य सुतः शाक्यः शाक्याच्छुद्धोदनोऽभवत् ।। ३७.

There will be a heroic king named Sanjaya, victorious in battle; Sanjaya's son will be Shakya, and from Shakya will be born Shuddhodana.

शुद्धोदनस्य भविता शाक्यार्थे राहुलः स्मृतः। प्रसेनजित्ततो भाव्यः क्षुद्रको भविता ततः ।। ३७.

To Shuddhodana will be born, for the sake of the Shakya line, the one known as Rahula; from Prasenajit will come Kshudraka, and from him another will be born.

क्षुद्रकात्क्षुलिको भाव्यः क्षुलिकात्सुरथः स्मृतः। सुमित्रः सुरथस्यापि अन्त्यश्च भविता नृपः ।। ३७.

From Kshudraka will come Kshulika, and from Kshulika, Suratha is remembered; Sumitra will be born from Suratha, and he will be the last king.

एते ऐक्ष्वाकवाः प्रोक्ता भवितारः कलौ युगे। बृहद्बलान्वये जाता भवितारः कलौ युगे। शूराश्च कृतविद्याश्च सत्यसन्धा जितेन्द्रियाः ।। ३७.

These are declared as the Ikshvaku kings who will arise in the Kali age, born in the line of Brihadbala; they will be valiant, learned, truthful, and self-controlled.

अत्रानुवंशश्लोकोऽयं भविष्यज्ञैरुदाहृतः। इक्ष्वाकूणामयं वंशः सुमित्रान्तो भविष्यति। सुमित्रं प्राप्य राजानं संस्थां प्राप्स्यति वै कलौ। इत्येतन्मानवं क्षेत्रमैलञ्च समुदाहृतम् ।। ३७.

Here is a verse from the genealogists, cited by those who know the future: 'This is the lineage of the Ikshvakus, which will end with Sumitra; upon reaching Sumitra as king, the line will come to its close in the Kali age.' Thus, the human field and the Maileya line have been described.

अत ऊर्द्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि मागधेयान्बृहद्रथान्। जरासन्धस्य ये वंशे सहदेवान्वये नृपाः ।। ३७.

Now, I shall declare the Magadhas of the Brihadratha line, the kings descended from Sahadeva in the lineage of Jarasandha.

अतीता वर्त्तमानाश्च भविष्याश्च तथा पुनः। प्राधान्यतः प्रवक्ष्यामि गदतो मे निबोधत ।। ३७.

Those who have passed, those who are present, and those who will come again—I shall recount them in order of prominence; listen as I speak.

संग्रामे भारते तस्मिन् सहदेवो निपातितः। सोमाधिस्तस्य तनयो राजर्षिः सगिरिव्रजे ।। ३७.

In that Bharata war, Sahadeva was slain; his son was the royal sage Somadhi, in the city of Girivraja.

पञ्चाशतं तथाष्टौ च समा राज्यमकारयत्। श्रुतश्रवाः चतुःषष्टिसमास्तस्य सुतोऽभवत्। अयुतायुस्तु षड्विंशं राज्यं वर्षाण्यकारयत्। समाः शतं निरामित्रो महीं भुक्त्वा दिवङ्गतः ।। ३७.

He ruled for fifty-eight years; his son Shrutashrava lived for sixty-four years. Ayutayu ruled for twenty-six years, and after enjoying the earth for a hundred years, Niramitra departed this world.

पञ्चाशतं समाः षट् च सुकृत्तः प्राप्तवान्महीम्। त्रयोविंशं बृहत्कर्मा राज्यं वर्षाण्यकारयत् ।। ३७.

Sukrit ruled the earth for fifty-six years; Brihatkarma ruled for twenty-three years.

सेनाजित्साम्प्रतं चापि एतां वै भुज्यते समाः। श्रुतञ्जयस्तु वर्षाणि चत्वारिंशद्भविष्यति ।। ३७.

At present, Senajit rules for these years; Shrutanjaya will rule for forty years.

महाबाहुर्महाबुद्धिर्महाभीमपराक्रमः। पञ्चत्रिंशत्तु वर्षाणि महीं पालयिता नृपः ।। ३७.

The king, mighty-armed, great in wisdom, and of formidable valor, will protect the earth for thirty-five years.

अष्टपञ्चा शतं चाब्दान् राज्ये स्थास्यति वै शुचिः। अष्टाविंशत्समाः पूर्णाः क्षेमो राजा भविष्यति ।। ३७.

The pure king will remain in power for eighty-five years; Kshema will be king for a full twenty-eight years.

भुवतस्तु चतुःषष्टीराज्यं प्राप्स्यति वीर्य्यवान्। पञ्चवर्षाणि पूर्णानि धर्मनेत्रो भविष्यति ।। ३७.

Bhuvata, endowed with strength, will obtain the kingdom for sixty-four years; Dharmanetra will rule for a full five years.

भोक्ष्यते नृपतिश्चैव ह्यष्टपञ्चाशतं समाः। अष्टात्रिंशत्समा राज्यं सुव्रतस्य भविष्यति ।। ३७.

The king will enjoy the kingdom for fifty-eight years; Suvrata will rule for thirty-eight years.

चत्वारिंशद्दशाष्टौ च दृढसेनो भविष्यति। त्रयस्त्रिंशत्तु वर्षाणि सुमतिः प्राप्स्यते ततः ।। ३७.

Dridhasena will rule for forty-eight years; after him, Sumati will obtain the kingdom for thirty-three years.

द्वाविंशतिसमा राज्यं सुचलो भोक्ष्यते ततः। चत्वारिंशत्समा राजा सुनेत्रो भोक्ष्यते ततः ।। ३७.

Sukala will rule for twenty-two years; after him, Sunetra will rule for forty years.

सत्यजित्पृथिवीराज्यं त्र्यशीतिं भोक्ष्यते समाः। प्राप्येमां वीरजिच्चापि पञ्चत्रिंशद्भविष्यति ।। ३७.

Satyajit will rule the earth for eighty-three years; after him, Virajit will obtain the kingdom for thirty-five years.
