पञ्चैव पाण्डवेभ्यश्च द्रौपद्यां जज्ञिरे सुताः। द्रौपद्यजनयज्ज्येष्ठं श्रुतिविद्धं युधिष्ठिरात् ।। ३७.
From the Pandavas, five sons were born to Draupadi; Draupadi bore the eldest, Shrutavidha, from Yudhishthira.
हिडम्बा भीमसेनात्तु जज्ञे पुत्रं घटोत्कचम्। काश्याः पुनर्भीमसेनाज्जज्ञे सर्व्ववृकं सुतम् ।। ३७.
From Bhimasena and Hidimba was born the son Ghatotkacha; again, from Bhimasena and Kashya was born the son Sarvavrika.
सुहोत्रं विजया माद्री सहदेवादजायत। करेमत्यान्तु वैद्यायां निरमित्रस्तु लाङ्गलिः ।। ३७.
Vijaya, Madri's son, begot Suhotra; and from Sahadeva and Vaideya, Niramitra and Langali were born.
सुभद्रायां रथी पार्थादभिमन्युरजायत। उत्तरायान्तु वैराट्यां परिक्षिदभिमन्युजः ।। ३७.
From Partha and Subhadra was born the charioteer Abhimanyu; and from Abhimanyu and Uttara, daughter of Virata, was born Parikshit.
परिक्षितस्तु दायादो राजासीज्जनमेजयः। ब्राह्मणान् स्थापयामास स वै वाजसनेयिकान् ।। ३७.
Parikshit’s heir was the king Janamejaya; he established the Brahmins of the Vajasaneya tradition.
असपत्नं तदामर्षाद्वैशम्पायन एव तु। न स्थास्यतीह दुर्बुद्धे तवैतद्वचनं भुवि ।। ३७.
Out of resentment, Vaisampayana declared: 'This word of yours, O foolish one, will not remain here without rival.'
यावत्स्था स्याम्यहं लोके तावन्नैतत्प्रशस्यते। अभितः संस्थितश्चापि ततः स जनमेजयः ।। ३७.
As long as I remain in this world, this will not be praised; and even after I am gone, so it was for Janamejaya.
पौर्णमास्येन हविषा देवमिष्ट्वा प्रजापतिम्। विज्ञाय संस्थितोऽपश्यत्तद्वधीष्टां विभोर्मखे ।। ३७.
Having worshipped Prajapati with an offering at the full moon, and understanding, he departed and saw that the destruction desired by the Lord occurred in the sacrifice.
परिक्षित्तनयश्वापि पौरवो जनमेजयः । द्विरश्वमेधमाहृत्य ततो वाजसनेयकम् । प्रवर्त्तयित्वा तद्ब्रह्म त्रिखर्व्वी जनमेजयः ।। ३७.
Janamejaya, the Paurava, son of Parikshit, after performing the horse sacrifice twice, then established the Vajasaneyi tradition, and Janamejaya, with three horse sacrifices, set forth that Brahma.
खर्व्वमश्वकमुख्यानां खर्व्वमङ्गनिवासिनाम्। सर्व्वञ्च मध्यदेशानां त्रिखर्व्वी जनमेजयः । विषादाद्ब्राह्मणैः सार्द्धमभिशस्तः क्षयं ययौ ।। ३७.
Janamejaya, with three horse sacrifices, diminished the chief horses, diminished the women-dwellers, and all the people of the central region; afflicted, he was cursed by the Brahmins and met his end.
तस्य पुत्रः शतनीको बलवान् सत्यविक्रमः । ततः सुतं शतानीकं विप्रास्तमभ्यषेचयत् ।। ३७.
His son was Shatanika, powerful and true in valor; then the Brahmins consecrated his son Shatanika.
पुत्रोऽश्वमेध दत्तोऽभूच्छतानीकस्य वीर्य्यवान्। पुत्रोऽश्वमेधदत्ताद्वै जातः परपुरंजयः ।। ३७.
The son of Shatanika was Ashvamedhadatta, full of vigor; and from Ashvamedhadatta was born Parapuramjaya.
अधिसामकृष्णो धर्मात्मा साम्प्रतोऽयं महायशाः। यस्मिन् प्रशासति महीं युष्माभिरिदमाहृतम् ।। ३७.
Adhisamakrishna, righteous and of great fame, now rules; under whose reign you have accomplished this.
दुरापं दीर्घसत्रं वै त्रीणि वर्षाणि दुश्चरम्। वर्षद्वयं कुरुक्षेत्रे दृषद्वत्यां द्विजोत्तमाः ।। ३७.
This difficult, long sacrifice, hard to attain, lasting three years, was performed for two years at Kurukshetra and on the Drishadvati, O best of twice-born.
ऋषय ऊचुः ।। श्रोतुं भविष्यमिच्छामः प्रजानां वै महामते । सूत सार्द्धं नृपैर्भाव्यं व्यतीतं कीर्त्तितं त्वया ।। ३७.
The sages said: We wish to hear, O wise one, about the future of the people, O Suta, along with the kings, as you have recounted the past.
यत्तु संस्थास्यते कृत्यमुत्पत्स्यन्ति चे ये नृपाः। वर्षाग्रतोऽपि प्रब्रूहि नामतश्चैव तान्नृपान् ।। ३७.
Tell us also what will be established in the future, and the kings who will arise; speak their names as well, even those who will come after many years.
कालं युगप्रमाणञ्च गुणदोषान् भविष्यतः। सुखदुःखे प्रजानाञ्च धर्मतः कामतोऽर्थतः ।। ३७.
Tell us the time, the measure of the ages, the virtues and faults of what is to come, and the happiness and sorrow of the people in regard to righteousness, desire, and wealth.
एतत्सर्वं प्रसङ्ख्याय पृच्छतां ब्रूहि तत्वतः। स एवमुक्तो मुनिभिः सूतो बुद्धिमतां वरः। आचचक्षे यथावृत्तं यथादृष्टं यथाश्रुतम् ।। ३७.
Having considered all this, tell us the truth as we ask; thus addressed by the sages, the Suta, foremost among the wise, narrated as it happened, as he saw and as he heard.
यथा मे कीर्त्तितं सर्वं व्यासेनाद्भुतकर्म्मणा। भाव्यं कलियुगञ्चैव तथा मन्वन्तराणि तु ।। ३७.
As everything was recounted to me by Vyasa, the wondrous actor, so also about the coming Kali Yuga and the Manvantaras.
अनागतानि सर्वाणि ब्रुवतो मे निबोधत। अत ऊर्द्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि भविष्यन्ति वृपास्तु ये ।। ३७.
Hear from me all that is yet to come; from here onward I will declare the kings who will arise.
ऐलांश्चैव तथेक्ष्वाकून् सौद्युम्नांश्चैव पार्थिवान्। येषु संस्थाप्यते क्षेत्रणैक्ष्वाकवमिदं शुभम् ।। ३७.
The Ailas, the Ikshvakus, and the Saudyumnas—those royal lines in which this auspicious Ikshvaku land is established.
तान् सर्वान् कीर्त्तयिष्यामि भविष्ये पठितान्नृपान्। तेभ्यः परे च ये चान्ये उत्पत्स्यन्ते महीक्षितः ।। ३७.
I shall recount all those future kings who will be named, and also those others who will arise after them, O rulers of the earth.
क्षत्राः पारशवाः शूद्रास्तथा ये च द्विजातयः। अन्धाः शकाः पुलिन्दाश्च तूलिका यवनैः सह ।। ३७.
The Kshatriyas, Parashavas, Shudras, and the twice-born; the Andhas, Shakas, Pulindas, Tulikas, together with the Yavanas.
कैवर्त्ताभीरशबरा ये चान्ये म्लेच्छजातयः। वर्षाग्रतः प्रवक्ष्यामि नामतश्चैव तान्नृपान् ।। ३७.
The Kaivartas, Abhiras, Shabaras, and other Mleccha tribes; I will declare them in order of the years, and also name those kings.
अधिसामकृष्णः सोऽयं साम्प्रतं पौरवान्नृपः। तस्यान्ववाये वक्ष्यामि भविष्ये तावतो नृपान् ।। ३७.
This king, Adhisamakrishna, is now ruling among the descendants of Puru; I shall recount, in due order, the kings who will arise in his lineage in the future.
अधिसामकृष्णपुत्रो निर्वक्रे भविता किल। गङ्गयापहृते तस्मिन्नगरे नागसाह्वये। त्यक्त्वा च तं सुवासञ्च कौशाम्ब्यां स निवत्स्यति ।। ३७.
Adhisamakrishna's son will be Nirvakra, it is said; when the city called Nagasahvaya is taken away by the Ganga, he will abandon that city and his fine residence, and dwell in Kaushambi.
भविष्यदुष्णस्तत्पुत्र उष्णाच्चित्ररथः स्मृतः। शुचिद्रथश्चित्ररथाद्वृतिमांश्च शुचिद्रथात् ।। ३७.
Nirvakra's son will be Ushna, and from Ushna will come Citraratha; from Citraratha will be Shucidratha, and from Shucidratha, Vritiman.
सुषेणो वै महावीर्यो भविष्यति महायशाः। तस्मात्सुषेणाद्भविता सुतीर्थो नाम पार्थिवः ।। ३७.
From Vritiman will be born Sushena, a man of great strength and fame; from Sushena will arise a king named Sutirtha.
रुचः सुतीर्थाद्भविता त्रिचक्षो भविता ततः। त्रिचक्षस्य तु दायादो भविता वै सुखीबलः ।। ३७.
From Sutirtha will come Rucha, and from him Trichakshu; the heir of Trichakshu will be Sukhibala.
सुखीबलसुतश्चापि भाव्यो राजा परिप्लुतः। परिप्लुतसुतश्चापि भविता सुनयो नृपः ।। ३७.
The son of Sukhibala will be the king Paripluta; and Paripluta's son will be the ruler Sunaya.
