तस्यान्ववायजाः ख्याताः कुरवो नृपसत्तमाः। कुरोस्तु दयिताः पुत्राः सुधन्वा जह्नुरेव च ।। ३७.
His descendants, renowned as the Kurus, were foremost among kings. Of Kuru, the beloved sons were Sudhanvan and Jahnu.
परिक्षितो महाराजः पुत्रकश्चारिमर्दनः। सुधन्वनस्तु दायादः सुहोत्रो मतिमान् स्मृतः ।। ३७.
Parikṣit was a great king, and his son was Arimardana. Sudhanvan’s heir was Suhotra, remembered as wise.
च्यवनस्तस्य पुत्रस्तु राजा धर्मार्थकोविदः। च्यवनस्य कृतः पुत्र इष्ट्वा यज्ञैर्महातपाः ।। ३७.
Cyavana was his son, a king skilled in righteousness and wealth. Cyavana’s son was Kṛta, who performed sacrifices with great austerity.
विश्रुतं जनयामास पुत्रमिन्द्रसखं नृपः। विद्योपरिचरं वीरं वसुं नामान्तरिक्षगम् ।। ३७.
The king begot a famous son, Indra’s friend, a hero named Vasu, who moved through the sky, known as Vidyoparicara.
विद्योपरिचराज्जज्ञे गिरिका सप्त सूनवः। महारथो भगधरो विश्रुतो यो बृहद्रथः ।। ३७.
From Vidyoparicara were born seven sons by Girikā: Mahāratha, Bhagadhara, the renowned Bṛhadratha,
प्रत्यग्रहः कुशश्चैव यमाहुर्मणिवाहनम्। माथैल्यश्च ललित्थश्च मत्स्यकालश्च सप्तमः ।। ३७.
Pratyagraha, Kuśa, who is called Maṇivāhana, Māthailya, Lalittha, and Matsyakāla as the seventh.
बृहद्रथस्य दायादः कुशाग्रो नाम विश्रुतः। कुशाग्रस्यात्मजश्चैव ऋषभो नाम वीर्यवान् ।। ३७.
Bṛhadratha’s heir was the famous Kuśāgra. Kuśāgra’s own son was Ṛṣabha, known for his strength.
ऋषभस्यापि दायादः पुष्पवान्नाम धार्मिकः। विक्रान्तस्तस्य दायादो राजा सत्यहितः स्मृतः ।। ३७.
Ṛṣabha’s heir was Puṣpavān, righteous in conduct. Puṣpavān’s heir was the valiant king Satyahita.
तस्य पुत्रः सुधन्वा च तस्मादूर्ज्जः प्रतापवान्। ऊर्ज्जस्य नभसः पुत्रस्तस्माज्जज्ञे स वीर्यवान् ।। ३७.
His son was Sudhanvan, and from him came Ūrjja, renowned for his prowess. Ūrjja’s son was Nabhasa, and from him was born a mighty one.
शकले द्वे स वै जातो जरया सन्धितस्तु सः। जरासन्धो महाबाहुर्जरया सन्धितस्तु सः ।। ३७.
He was born in two halves, joined together by the force of age. Jarāsandha, of great arms, was thus united by old age.
सर्वक्षत्रस्य जेताऽसौ जरासन्धो महाबलः। जरासन्धस्य पुत्रस्तु सहदेवः प्रतापवान् ।। ३७.
Jarāsandha, of immense strength, was the conqueror of all Kṣatriyas. Jarāsandha’s son was Sahadeva, renowned for his prowess.
सहतेवात्मजः श्रीमान् सोमाधिः सुमहातपाः। श्रुतश्रुवस्तु सोमाधेर्मागधः परिकीर्तितः ।। ३७.
Sahadeva’s son was the illustrious Somādhi, of great austerity. From Somādhi came Śrutaśru, known as a Māgadha.
परिक्षितस्य दायादो बभूव जनमेजयः। श्रुतसेनस्य दायादो भीमसेनोऽपि नामतः ।। ३७.
Parikṣit’s heir was Janamejaya. Śrutasena’s heir was Bhīmasena, so named.
जह्नुस्त्वजनयत्पुत्रं सुरथं नाम भूमिपम्। सुरथस्य तु दायादो वीरो राजा विदूरथः ।। ३७.
Jahnu begot a son named Suratha, a ruler of the earth. Suratha’s heir was the heroic king Vidūratha.
विदूरथसुतश्चापि सार्वभौम इति श्रुतिः। सार्वभौमा ज्जयत्सेन आराधिस्तस्य चात्मजः ।। ३७.
Vidūratha’s son was Sārvabhauma, as is heard. Sārvabhauma’s son was Jayatsena, and his son was Ārādhita.
आराधितो महासत्त्व अयुतायुस्ततः स्मृतः । अक्रोधनोऽयुतायोऽस्तु तस्माद्देवातिथिः स्मृतः ।। ३७.
Ārādhita, of great spirit, was known as Ayutāyu. Akrodhana was Ayutāyu’s son, and from him came Devātithi.
देवातिथेस्तु दायाद ऋक्ष एव बभूव ह। भीमसेनस्तथा ऋक्षाद्दिलीपस्तस्य चात्मजः ।। ३७.
Devātithi’s heir was Ṛkṣa. Bhīmasena was born from Ṛkṣa, and Dilīpa was his son.
दिलीपसूनुः प्रतिपस्तस्य पुत्रास्त्रयः स्मृताः। देवापिः शन्तनुश्चैव बाह्लीकश्चैव ते त्रयः ।। ३७.
Dilīpa’s son was Pratipa, and he had three sons: Devāpi, Śantanu, and Bāhlīka—these three are remembered.
बाह्लीकस्य तु विज्ञेयः सप्तबाह्लीश्वरो नृपः। बाह्लीकस्य सुतश्चैव सोमदत्तो महायशाः ।। ३७.
Know that the king of Bahlika is the lord of seven Bahlikas; and Somadatta, renowned for his greatness, is the son of Bahlika.
जज्ञिरे सोमदत्तात्तु भूरिर्भूरिश्रवाः शलः । देवापिस्तु प्रवव्राज वनं धर्म्मपरीप्सया ।। ३७.
From Somadatta were born Bhuri, Bhurishravas, and Shala; and Devapi departed to the forest, seeking righteousness.
उपाध्यायस्तु देवानां देवापिरभवन्मुनिः। च्यवनोऽस्य हि पुत्रस्तु इष्टकश्च महात्मनः ।। ३७.
Devapi became the preceptor of the gods, a sage; Cyavana and Ishtaka, both of great soul, were his sons.
शन्तनुस्त्वभवद्राजा विद्वान् वै स महाभिषः । इमं चोदाहरन्त्यत्र श्लोकं प्रति महाभिषम् ।। ३७.
Shantanu became king, learned and a great healer; and regarding the great healer, this verse is cited here.
यं यं राजा स्पृशति वै जीर्णं समयतो नरम्। पुनर्युवा स भवति तस्मात्ते शन्तनुं विदुः ।। ३७.
Whomever the king touches, a man worn by age, he becomes young again; thus, they know Shantanu.
ततोऽस्य शन्तनुत्वं वै प्रजास्विह परिश्रुतम्। स उपयेमे धर्म्मात्मा शन्तनु र्जाह्नवीं नृपः ।। ३७.
Therefore, Shantanu's fame among the people is well known here; the righteous king Shantanu married Jahnavi.
तस्यां देवव्रतं भीष्मं पुत्रं सोऽजनयत्प्रभुः । स च भीष्म इति ख्यातः पाण्डवानां पितामहः ।। ३७.
From her, the lord begot Devavrata, called Bhishma, his son; he is known as Bhishma, the grandfather of the Pandavas.
काले विचित्रवीर्यन्तु शन्तनु र्जनयत्सुतम्। शन्तनोर्दयितं पुत्रं प्रजाहितकरम्प्रभुम्। कृष्णद्वैपायनश्चैव क्षेत्रे वैचित्रवीर्यके ।। ३७.
In time, Shantanu begot a son, Vichitravirya, beloved and beneficial to the people; and Krishna Dvaipayana also begot sons in the field of Vichitravirya.
धृतराष्ट्रञ्च पाण्डुञ्च विदुरञ्चाप्यजीजनत्। धृतराष्ट्रात्तु गान्धारी पुत्राणां सुषुवे शतम् ।। ३७.
He begot Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura; from Dhritarashtra, Gandhari bore a hundred sons.
तेषां दुर्योधनो ज्येष्ठः सर्व्वक्षत्रस्य स प्रभुः। माद्री राज्ञी पृथा चैव पाण्डोर्भार्ये बभूवतुः ।। ३७.
Among them, Duryodhana is the eldest, lord of all the Kshatriyas; Madri and Pritha were the wives of Pandu.
देवदत्ताः सुतास्ताभ्यां पाण्डोरर्थे विजज्ञिरे। धर्म्माद्युधिष्ठिरो जज्ञे वायोर्जज्ञे वृकोदरः ।। ३७.
From those two, sons were born for Pandu by divine gift; Yudhishthira was born from Dharma, and Vrikodara from Vayu.
इन्द्राद्धनञ्जयो जज्ञे शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः। अश्विभ्यां सह देवश्च नकुलश्चापि माद्रिजौ ।। ३७.
From Indra, Dhananjaya was born, whose prowess equals Shakra; Nakula and Sahadeva, sons of Madri, were born from the Ashvins.
