पञ्चानां रक्षणार्थाय पितैतानभ्यभाषत। पञ्चानां विद्धि पञ्चैतान् स्फीता जनपदा युताः ।। ३७.
For the protection of the five, their father addressed them: 'Know these five, each endowed with flourishing realms.'
अलं संरक्षणे तेषां पञ्चाला इति विश्रुताः। मुद्गलस्यापि मौद्गल्याः क्षात्रोपेतद्विजातयः ।। ३७.
Sufficient is their protection; they are renowned as the Pañcālas. And from Mudgala, the Maudgalyas arose—twice-borns with kṣatriya lineage.
एते ह्यङ्गिरसः पक्षे संश्रिताः कण्ठमुद्घलाः । मुद्घलस्य सुतो ज्येष्ठो ब्रह्मिष्ठः सुमहायशाः ।। ३७.
These Angirasas, having taken refuge on this side, are the Mudghalas of the Kaṇṭha clan; the eldest son of Mudghala was supremely learned in the Vedas and possessed great fame.
इन्द्रसेना यतो गर्भं बध्यश्वं प्रत्यपद्यत। बध्यश्वान्मिथुनं जज्ञे मेनका इति नः श्रुतिः ।। ३७.
From Indrasenā, who conceived, was born Badhyaśva; from Badhyaśva came a pair of twins, known as Menakā, as we have heard in tradition.
दिवोदासश्च राजर्षिरहल्या च यशस्विनी। शारद्वतस्तु दायादमहल्या समसूयत ।। ३७.
Divodāsa, the royal sage, and the illustrious Ahalyā—Ahalyā bore a son to Śāradvat, as his heir.
शतानन्दमृषिश्रेष्ठं तस्यापि सुमहायशाः। पुत्रः सत्यधृतिर्नाम धनुर्वेदस्य पारगः ।। ३७.
Śatānanda, foremost among sages, was born to her; his son, renowned and steadfast in truth, was named Satyadhṛti, master of the science of archery.
अथ सत्यधृतेः शुक्रं दृष्ट्वाप्सरसमग्रतः। प्रचस्कन्दे शरस्तम्बे मैथुनं समपद्यत ।। ३७.
Then, as Satyadhṛti beheld an apsaras before him, his seed fell upon a clump of reeds, and there union took place.
कृपया तच्च जग्राह शन्तनुर्मृगयां गतः। कृपः स्मृतः स वै तस्माद्गौतमी च कृपी तथा ।। ३७.
Out of compassion, Śantanu, who had gone hunting, took up that child; he became known as Kṛpa, and from him also came Gautamī, called Kṛpī.
एते शारद्वताः प्रोक्ताः ऋतथ्यो गौतमान्वयः। अत ऊर्द्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि दिवोदासस्य सन्ततिम् ।। ३७.
These are the descendants of Śāradvat, called Ṛtathyas, of the Gautama lineage; now I shall speak of the progeny of Divodāsa.
दिवोदासस्य दायादो ब्रह्मिष्ठो मित्रयुर्नृपः। मैत्रेयस्तु ततो जज्ञे स्मृता एतेऽपि संश्रिताः ।। ३७.
The heir of Divodāsa was the king Mitrayu, supremely learned in the Vedas; from Maitreya was born Smṛta—these too are considered as belonging to this line.
एतेऽपि संश्रिताः पक्षं क्षात्रोपेतास्तु भार्गवाः। राजापि च्यवनो विद्वांस्ततः प्रतिरथोऽभवत् ।। ३७.
These too, having taken refuge in this lineage, became Bhārgavas with Kṣatriya affiliation; and the learned king Cyavana was born from them, from whom Pratiratha arose.
अथ वै च्यवनाद्धीमान् सुदासः समपद्यत। सौदासः सहदेवश्च सोमकस्तस्य चात्मजः ।। ३७.
Then, from Cyavana, the wise Sudāsa was born; Saudāsa, Sahadeva, and Somaka were his sons.
अजमीढः पुनर्जातः क्षीणे वंशे स सोमकः। सोमकस्य सुतो जन्तुर्हते तस्मिञ्छतं विभो ।। ३७.
Ajamīḍha was reborn when the lineage had dwindled; Somaka was his son, and to that noble Somaka a hundred sons were born.
पुषाणामजमीढस्य सोमकत्वे महात्मनः। तेषां यवीयान् पृषतो द्रुपदस्य पितामहः ।। ३७.
Of the sons of Ajamīḍha, the great-souled Somaka, the youngest was Pṛṣata, the grandfather of Drupada.
धृष्टद्युम्नः सुतस्तस्य धृष्टकेतुश्च तत्सुतः। महिषी चाजमीढस्य धूमिनी पुत्रगर्धिनी ।। ३७.
His son was Dhṛṣṭadyumna, and Dhṛṣṭaketu was his son; Ajamīḍha’s chief queen, Dhūminī, was the mother of sons.
पुनर्भवे तपस्तेपे शतं वर्षाणि दुश्चरम्। हुताग्न्यनिद्रा ह्यभवत् पवित्रमितभोजना ।। ३७.
In her next birth, she performed severe austerities for a hundred years; she remained pure, subsisting on little food, ever wakeful by the sacrificial fire.
अहोरात्रं कुशेष्वेव सुष्वाप सुमहाव्रता। तस्यां वै धूम्रवर्णायामजमीढश्च वीर्यवान् ।। ३७.
That woman of great vows slept day and night only on kuśa grass; in her, Dhūmravarṇā, the mighty Ajamīḍha was born.
ऋक्षं संजनयामास धूम्रवर्ण सिताग्रजम्। ऋक्षात् संवरणो जज्ञे कुरुः संवरणादभूत् ।। ३७.
He begot Ṛkṣa, elder brother of Sitā, upon Dhūmravarṇā; from Ṛkṣa was born Saṃvaraṇa, and from Saṃvaraṇa, Kuru was born.
यः प्रयागं पदाक्रम्य कुरुक्षेत्रञ्चकार ह। कृष्ट्वैनं सुमहातेजा वर्षाणि सुबहून्यथ ।। ३७.
He who, having reached Prayāga, established Kurukṣetra; that man of great energy ploughed it for many years.
कृष्यमाणे तदा शक्रस्तत्रास्य वरदो बभौ। पुण्यञ्च रमणीयञ्च पुण्यकृद्भिर्निषेवितम् ।। ३७.
As he was ploughing, Indra appeared there and granted him a boon; that land became sacred, delightful, and frequented by the virtuous.
तस्यान्ववायजाः ख्याताः कुरवो नृपसत्तमाः। कुरोस्तु दयिताः पुत्राः सुधन्वा जह्नुरेव च ।। ३७.
His descendants, renowned as the Kurus, were foremost among kings. Of Kuru, the beloved sons were Sudhanvan and Jahnu.
परिक्षितो महाराजः पुत्रकश्चारिमर्दनः। सुधन्वनस्तु दायादः सुहोत्रो मतिमान् स्मृतः ।। ३७.
Parikṣit was a great king, and his son was Arimardana. Sudhanvan’s heir was Suhotra, remembered as wise.
च्यवनस्तस्य पुत्रस्तु राजा धर्मार्थकोविदः। च्यवनस्य कृतः पुत्र इष्ट्वा यज्ञैर्महातपाः ।। ३७.
Cyavana was his son, a king skilled in righteousness and wealth. Cyavana’s son was Kṛta, who performed sacrifices with great austerity.
विश्रुतं जनयामास पुत्रमिन्द्रसखं नृपः। विद्योपरिचरं वीरं वसुं नामान्तरिक्षगम् ।। ३७.
The king begot a famous son, Indra’s friend, a hero named Vasu, who moved through the sky, known as Vidyoparicara.
विद्योपरिचराज्जज्ञे गिरिका सप्त सूनवः। महारथो भगधरो विश्रुतो यो बृहद्रथः ।। ३७.
From Vidyoparicara were born seven sons by Girikā: Mahāratha, Bhagadhara, the renowned Bṛhadratha,
प्रत्यग्रहः कुशश्चैव यमाहुर्मणिवाहनम्। माथैल्यश्च ललित्थश्च मत्स्यकालश्च सप्तमः ।। ३७.
Pratyagraha, Kuśa, who is called Maṇivāhana, Māthailya, Lalittha, and Matsyakāla as the seventh.
बृहद्रथस्य दायादः कुशाग्रो नाम विश्रुतः। कुशाग्रस्यात्मजश्चैव ऋषभो नाम वीर्यवान् ।। ३७.
Bṛhadratha’s heir was the famous Kuśāgra. Kuśāgra’s own son was Ṛṣabha, known for his strength.
ऋषभस्यापि दायादः पुष्पवान्नाम धार्मिकः। विक्रान्तस्तस्य दायादो राजा सत्यहितः स्मृतः ।। ३७.
Ṛṣabha’s heir was Puṣpavān, righteous in conduct. Puṣpavān’s heir was the valiant king Satyahita.
तस्य पुत्रः सुधन्वा च तस्मादूर्ज्जः प्रतापवान्। ऊर्ज्जस्य नभसः पुत्रस्तस्माज्जज्ञे स वीर्यवान् ।। ३७.
His son was Sudhanvan, and from him came Ūrjja, renowned for his prowess. Ūrjja’s son was Nabhasa, and from him was born a mighty one.
शकले द्वे स वै जातो जरया सन्धितस्तु सः। जरासन्धो महाबाहुर्जरया सन्धितस्तु सः ।। ३७.
He was born in two halves, joined together by the force of age. Jarāsandha, of great arms, was thus united by old age.
