समरस्य परः पारः सत्वदश्च इति त्रयः। पुत्राः सर्वगुणोपेताः पारपुत्रो वृषुर्बभौ ।। ३७.
Samara's sons were Para, Satvada, and another, three in all, endowed with every virtue; Para's son was Vrisha.
वृषोस्तु सुकृतिर्नाम सुकृतेनेह कर्मणा। जज्ञे सर्वगुणोपेतो विब्राजस्तस्य चात्मजः ।। ३७.
Vrisha's son was Sukriti, who, by virtuous deeds, begot Vibraja, endowed with all qualities.
विभ्राजस्य तु दायादस्त्वणुहो नाम पार्थिवः। बभूव शुकजामाता ऋचीभर्त्ता महायशाः ।। ३७.
Vibraja's heir was Anuha, a king; he became the son-in-law of Shuka and the father of Rishi, of great fame.
अणुहस्य तु दायादो ब्रह्मदत्तो महातपाः। योगसूनुः सुतस्तस्य विष्वक्सेनोऽभवनृपः ।। ३७.
Anuha's heir was Brahmadatta, of great austerity; his son was Yogasunu, and Vishvaksena became king.
विब्राजपुत्रा राजानः कुकृतेनेह कर्म्मणा। विष्वक्सेनस्य पुत्रस्तु उदक्सेनो बभूव ह ।। ३७.
The radiant sons became kings here through wrongful deeds; and Viṣvaksena's son was indeed named Udaksena.
भल्लाटस्तस्य दायादो येन राजा पुराहतः। भल्लाटस्य तु दायादो राजासीज्जनमेजयः। उग्रायुधेन तस्यार्थे सर्वे नीपाः प्रणाशिताः ।। ३७.
Bhallāta was his heir, by whom the king was formerly slain; and Bhallāta's heir was the king Janamejaya. For his sake, by Ugrāyudha, all the kings were destroyed.
उग्रायुधः कस्य सुतः कस्मिन् वंशे च कीर्त्यते। किमर्थञ्चैव नीपास्ते तेन सर्वे प्रणाशिताः ।। ३७.
Of whom was Ugrāyudha the son, and in which lineage is he renowned? And for what reason were all those kings destroyed by him?
द्विमीढस्य तु दायादो विद्वान् जज्ञे यवीनरः। धृतिमांस्तस्य पुत्रस्तु तस्य सत्यधृतिः सुतः ।। ३७.
The learned Yavīnara was the heir of Dvimīḍha; his son was steadfast, and his son was Satyadhṛti.
अथ सत्यधृतेः पुत्रो दृढनेमिः प्रतापवान् । दृढनेमिसुतश्चापि सुवर्मा नाम पार्थिवः ।। ३७.
Then Satyadhṛti's son was the mighty Dṛḍhanemi; and Dṛḍhanemi's son was the king named Suvarmā.
आसीत्सुवर्म्मणः पुत्रः सार्वभौमः प्रतापवान्। सार्वभौम इति ख्यातः पृथिव्यामेकराड्बभौ ।। ३७.
Suvarmā had a son named Sārvabhauma, powerful and renowned; known as Sārvabhauma, he became the sole sovereign of the earth.
तस्यान्वये च महति महत्पौरवनन्दनः। महत्पौरवपुत्रस्तु राजा रुक्मरथः स्मृतः ।। ३७.
In his great lineage was born the illustrious son of Paurava; and the son of Mahatpaurava was the king known as Rukmaratha.
अथ रुक्मरथस्यापि सुपार्श्वो नाम पार्थिवः। सुपार्श्वतनयश्चापि सुमतिर्नाम धार्मिकः ।। ३७.
Then Rukmaratha's son was the king named Supārśva; and Supārśva's son was the righteous Sumati.
सुमतेरपि धर्म्मात्मा राजा सन्नतिमान् प्रभुः। तस्यासीत्सनतिर्नाम कृतस्तस्य सुतोऽभवत् ।। ३७.
From Sumati, too, was born the virtuous and humble king Sanati; his son was named Kṛta.
शिष्यो हिरण्यनाभेस्तु कौथुमस्य महात्मनः। चतुर्विंशतिधा तेन प्रोक्तास्ताः सामसंहिताः ।। ३७.
He was a disciple of the great-souled Kauthuma Hiraṇyanābha; by him, the Sāma Saṃhitās were taught in twenty-four branches.
स्मृतास्ते प्राच्यनामानः कार्त्ताः साम्नान्तु सामगाः । कार्तिरुग्रायुधः सोऽथ वीरः पौरवनन्दनः ।। ३७.
They are remembered as the Eastern recensions, composed by the singers of Sāman; and Kārti Ugrāyudha was that heroic descendant of Paurava.
बभूव येन विक्रम्य पृषतस्य पितामहः। नीलो नाम महाबाहुः पञ्चालाधिपतिर्हतः ।। ३७.
By whom, having displayed valor, the ancestor of Pṛṣata was slain; the mighty-armed Nīla, lord of the Pañcālas, was killed.
उग्रायुधस्य दायादः क्षेमो नाम महायशाः। क्षेमात्सु वीरः संजज्ञे सुवीरस्य नृपञ्जयः। नृपञ्जयाद्वीररथो इत्येते पौरवाः स्मृताः ।। ३७.
Ugrāyudha's heir was the illustrious Kṣema; from Kṣema was born the hero Suvīra, and from Suvīra, Nṛpañjaya; from Nṛpañjaya, Vīraratha—these are remembered as the Pauravas.
अजमीढस्य नीलिन्यां नीलः समभवन्नृपः। नीलस्य तपसोग्रेण सुशान्तिरभ्यजायत ।। ३७.
From Ajamīḍha and Nīlinī was born the king Nīla; by his intense austerity, Suśānti was born.
पुरुजानुः सुशान्तेस्तु रिक्षस्तु पुरुजानुजः। ततस्तु रिक्षदायादा भेदाश्च तनयास्त्विमे ।। ३७.
Purujānu was the son of Suśānti, and Rikṣa was the son of Purujānu; then, from Rikṣa, these sons and their branches arose.
मुद्गलः सृञ्जयश्चैव राजा बृहदिषुस्तथा । यवीयांश्चापि विक्रान्तः कम्पिल्यश्चैव पञ्चमः ।। ३७.
Mudgala, Sṛñjaya, and the king Bṛhadiṣu, as well as the valiant younger Yavīyān, and Kampilya as the fifth.
पञ्चानां रक्षणार्थाय पितैतानभ्यभाषत। पञ्चानां विद्धि पञ्चैतान् स्फीता जनपदा युताः ।। ३७.
For the protection of the five, their father addressed them: 'Know these five, each endowed with flourishing realms.'
अलं संरक्षणे तेषां पञ्चाला इति विश्रुताः। मुद्गलस्यापि मौद्गल्याः क्षात्रोपेतद्विजातयः ।। ३७.
Sufficient is their protection; they are renowned as the Pañcālas. And from Mudgala, the Maudgalyas arose—twice-borns with kṣatriya lineage.
एते ह्यङ्गिरसः पक्षे संश्रिताः कण्ठमुद्घलाः । मुद्घलस्य सुतो ज्येष्ठो ब्रह्मिष्ठः सुमहायशाः ।। ३७.
These Angirasas, having taken refuge on this side, are the Mudghalas of the Kaṇṭha clan; the eldest son of Mudghala was supremely learned in the Vedas and possessed great fame.
इन्द्रसेना यतो गर्भं बध्यश्वं प्रत्यपद्यत। बध्यश्वान्मिथुनं जज्ञे मेनका इति नः श्रुतिः ।। ३७.
From Indrasenā, who conceived, was born Badhyaśva; from Badhyaśva came a pair of twins, known as Menakā, as we have heard in tradition.
दिवोदासश्च राजर्षिरहल्या च यशस्विनी। शारद्वतस्तु दायादमहल्या समसूयत ।। ३७.
Divodāsa, the royal sage, and the illustrious Ahalyā—Ahalyā bore a son to Śāradvat, as his heir.
शतानन्दमृषिश्रेष्ठं तस्यापि सुमहायशाः। पुत्रः सत्यधृतिर्नाम धनुर्वेदस्य पारगः ।। ३७.
Śatānanda, foremost among sages, was born to her; his son, renowned and steadfast in truth, was named Satyadhṛti, master of the science of archery.
अथ सत्यधृतेः शुक्रं दृष्ट्वाप्सरसमग्रतः। प्रचस्कन्दे शरस्तम्बे मैथुनं समपद्यत ।। ३७.
Then, as Satyadhṛti beheld an apsaras before him, his seed fell upon a clump of reeds, and there union took place.
कृपया तच्च जग्राह शन्तनुर्मृगयां गतः। कृपः स्मृतः स वै तस्माद्गौतमी च कृपी तथा ।। ३७.
Out of compassion, Śantanu, who had gone hunting, took up that child; he became known as Kṛpa, and from him also came Gautamī, called Kṛpī.
एते शारद्वताः प्रोक्ताः ऋतथ्यो गौतमान्वयः। अत ऊर्द्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि दिवोदासस्य सन्ततिम् ।। ३७.
These are the descendants of Śāradvat, called Ṛtathyas, of the Gautama lineage; now I shall speak of the progeny of Divodāsa.
दिवोदासस्य दायादो ब्रह्मिष्ठो मित्रयुर्नृपः। मैत्रेयस्तु ततो जज्ञे स्मृता एतेऽपि संश्रिताः ।। ३७.
The heir of Divodāsa was the king Mitrayu, supremely learned in the Vedas; from Maitreya was born Smṛta—these too are considered as belonging to this line.
