अमोघरेताश्च भवान्नावकाशोऽस्ति च द्वयोः। एवमुक्तः स गर्भेण कुपितः प्रत्युवाच ह ।। ३७.
'Your seed is unfailing, and there is no room for two; so addressed by the embryo, he replied angrily.'
यस्मान्मामीदृशे काले सर्वभूतेप्सिते सति। प्रतिषेधसितत्तस्मात् तमो दीर्घं प्रवेक्ष्यसि ।। ३७.
'Because you have hindered me at such a time, when all beings desire this, therefore you shall enter into deep darkness for long.'
पादाभ्यान्तेन तच्छन्नं मातुर्द्वारं बृहस्पतेः। तद्रेतस्तु तयोर्मध्ये निवार्यः शिशुकोऽभवत् ।। ३७.
The entrance of the mother, covered between her feet, was blocked by Brihaspati's seed, and thus the child was restrained between the two.
सद्यो जातं कुमारन्तं दृष्ट्वाऽथ ममताऽब्रवीत्। गमिष्यामि गृहं स्वं वै भरद्वाजं बृहस्पते ।। ३७.
Seeing the boy immediately born, Mamatā said: 'I will go to my own house, O Brihaspati; this is Bharadvāja.'
एवमुक्त्वा गतायां स पुत्रन्त्यजति तत्क्षणात्। भरस्व बाढमित्युक्तो भरद्वाजस्ततोऽभवत् ।। ३७.
Having spoken thus, when she had gone, the son was abandoned at that moment; being told 'bear him well,' Bharadvāja then became so.
मातापितृभ्यां संत्यक्तं दृष्ट्वाथ मरुतः शिशुम्। गृहीत्वैनं भरद्वाजं जग्मुस्ते कृपया ततः ।। ३७.
Seeing the child abandoned by both mother and father, the Maruts, out of compassion, took Bharadvāja with them.
तस्मिन् काले तु भरतो मरुद्भिः क्रतुभिः क्रमात्। काम्यनैमित्तिकैर्यज्ञैर्यजते पुत्रलिप्सया ।। ३७.
At that time, Bharata performed sacrifices with the Maruts, with desired and occasional rites, longing for a son.
यदा स यजमानो वै पुत्रान्नासादयत् प्रभुः । यज्ञं ततो मरुत्सोमं पुत्रार्थे पुनराहरत् ।। ३७.
When that lord, the sacrificer, did not obtain a son, he again performed the Marutsoma sacrifice for a son.
तेन ते मरुतस्तस्य मरुत्सोमेन तोषिताः। भरद्वाजं ततः पुत्रं बार्हस्पत्यं मनीषिणम् ।। ३७.
By that, the Maruts were pleased with him through the Marutsoma; then they gave Bharadvāja, the wise son of Brihaspati, as his son.
भरतस्तु भरद्वाजं पुत्रं प्राप्य तदाब्रवीत्। प्रजायां संहृतायां वै कृतार्थोऽहं त्वया विभो ।। ३७.
Then Bharata, having obtained Bharadvāja as a son, said: 'Now that my lineage is restored, I am fulfilled by you, O illustrious one.'
पूर्वन्तु वितथं तस्य कृतं वै पुत्रजन्म हि। ततः स वितथो नाम भरद्वाजस्तथाऽभवत् ।। ३७.
Previously, his begetting of a son was in vain; therefore, Bharadvāja was called Vitatha.
तस्माद्दिव्यो भरद्वाजो ब्राह्मण्यात् क्षत्रियोऽभवत्। द्विमुख्यायननामा स स्मृतो द्विपितृकस्तु वै ।। ३७.
Thus, Bharadvāja, though a Brahmin by birth, became a Kshatriya; he is remembered as Dvimukhyāyana, the one with two fathers.
ततोऽथ वितथे जाते भरतः स दिवं ययौ। वितथस्य तु दायादो भुवमन्युर्बभूव ह ।। ३७.
Then, when Vitatha was born, Bharata went to heaven; Vitatha's heir on earth was Bhuvamanyu.
महाभूतोपमाश्चासंश्चत्वारो भुवमन्युजाः। बृहत्क्षत्रो महावीर्यो नरो गाग्रश्च वीर्यवान् ।। ३७.
The four sons of Bhuvamanyu were like great elements: Bṛhatkṣatra, mighty in valor, Nara, and Gāgra, strong in might.
नरस्य सांकृतिः पुत्रस्तस्य पुत्रौ महौजसौ। गुरुवीर्यस्त्रिदेवश्च सांकृत्याववरौ स्मृतौ ।। ३७.
Nara's son was Saṃkṛti; his two powerful sons were Guruvīrya and Trideva, known as the Saṃkṛtis.
दायादाश्चापि गाग्रस्य शिनिबद्धात् बभूव ह। स्मृताश्चैते ततो गाग्र्याः क्षात्रोपेता द्विजातयः ।। ३७.
The heirs of Gāgra were born from Śinibaddha; these are remembered as the Gāgryas, twice-born Kshatriyas.
महावीर्यसुतश्चापि भीमस्तस्मादुभक्षयः। तस्य भार्या विशाला तु सुषुवे वै सुतांस्त्रयः ।। ३७.
And Bhima, the son of great valor, was therefore a devourer; his wife Vishala indeed bore him three sons.
त्रय्यारुणिं पुष्करिणं तृतीयं सुषुवे कपिम्। कपेः क्षत्रवरा ह्येते तयोः प्रोक्ता महर्षयः ।। ३७.
She bore Trayyaruni, Pushkarini, and the third, a monkey; these two are renowned as great sages, and the monkey is of noble warrior lineage.
गाग्राः सांकृतयो वीर्याः क्षात्रोपेता द्विजातयः। संश्रिताङ्गिरसं पक्षं बृहत्क्षत्रस्य वक्ष्यति ।। ३७.
The Gagras, Sankritas, and Viryas are twice-born, endowed with warrior qualities; they have taken refuge in the Angirasa branch, which will be spoken of as belonging to Brihatkshatra.
बृहत्क्षत्रस्य दायादः सुहोत्रो नाम धार्मिकः। सुहोत्रस्यापि दायादो हस्ती नाम बभूव ह। तेनेदं निर्मितं पूर्वं नाम्ना वै हास्तिनं पुरम् ।। ३७.
The heir of Brihatkshatra was named Suhotra, righteous in conduct; and Suhotra's heir was Hastin, by whom this city was formerly established and named Hastinapura.
हस्तिनश्चापि दायादास्त्रयः परमधार्मिकाः। अजमीढो द्विमीढश्च पुरुमीढस्तथैव च ।। ३७.
Hastin had three heirs, all supremely righteous: Ajamidha, Dvimidha, and Purumidha.
अजमीढस्य पुत्रास्तु शभाः शुभकुलोद्वहाः। तपसोऽन्ते सुमहतो राज्ञो वृद्धस्य धार्मिकाः ।। ३७.
The sons of Ajamidha were Shabha, illustrious upholders of a noble lineage; at the end of great austerity, they were righteous kings.
भरद्वाजप्रसादेन श्रृणुध्वं तस्य विस्तरम्। अज मीढस्य केशिन्यां कण्ठः समभवत्किल ।। ३७.
By the grace of Bharadvaja, listen to their lineage in detail: In Kesini, Ajamidha begot Kantha.
मेधातिथिः सुतस्तस्य तस्मात् कण्ठायना द्विजाः। अजमीढस्य धूमिन्यां जज्ञे बृहद्वसुर्नृपः ।। ३७.
His son was Medhatithi; from him came the Kanthayana Brahmins. In Dhūmini, Ajamidha begot King Brihadvasu.
बृहद्वसोर्बृहद्विष्णुः पुत्रस्तस्य महाबलः। बृहत्कर्मा सुतस्तस्य पुत्रस्तस्य बृहद्रथः ।। ३७.
Brihadvasu's son was Brihadvishnu, of great strength; his son was Brihatkarma, and Brihadratha was his son.
विश्वजित्तनयस्तस्य सेनजित्तस्य चात्मजः। अथ सेनजितः पुत्राश्चत्वारो लोकविश्रुताः ।। ३७.
His son was Vishvajit, and Senajit was his son; then Senajit had four sons, renowned throughout the world.
रुचिराश्वश्च काव्यश्च रामो दृढधनुस्तथा। वत्सश्चावन्तको राजा यस्य ते परिवत्सराः ।। ३७.
Rucirashva, Kavya, Rama of firm bow, and Vatsa, King Avantaka; these are called the Parivatsaras.
रुचिराश्वस्य दायादः पृथुषेणो महायशाः। पृथुषेणस्य पारस्तु पारान्नीपोऽथ जज्ञिवान् ।। ३७.
Rucirashva's heir was Prithushena, of great fame; Prithushena's son was Para, and from Para was born Nipa.
यस्य चैकशतञ्चासीत् पुत्राणामिति नः श्रुतम्। नीपा इति समाख्याता राजानः सर्व एव ते ।। ३७.
It is heard that he had one hundred sons; all those kings were known as the Nipas.
तेषां वंशकरः श्रीमान् राजासीत्कीर्त्तिवर्द्धनः। काम्पिल्ये समरो नाम स चेष्टसमरोऽभवत् ।। ३७.
Among them, the illustrious king who founded the lineage was Kirtivardhana; in Kampilya, there was a king named Samara, who became known as Cheshta Samara.
