The one who deposits the seed leads the son from the realm of Yama, O king; and you are the nourisher of the embryo, do not disregard Śakuntalā.
Bharata begot nine sons from three women; the king did not accept them, saying, 'They are not suitable for me.'
Then those mothers, angered, sent their sons to the realm of Yama; thus, for that king, the birth of sons was spread out.
Then, brought by the Maruts, the son was given to Bṛhaspati; Bharadvāja was transferred by the Maruts, powerful through sacrifices.
There, the noble Bharadvāja's birth and transfer by the Maruts to Bharata are described.
When his wife was near to giving birth, the sage was present; seeing his brother's wife, Bṛhaspati spoke: 'Adorn your body, O beautiful one, grant me union.'
Thus addressed, she replied: 'O lord, I am pregnant; the embryo is mature, and utters Brahman with its voice.'
'Your seed is unfailing, yet the act is unrighteous,' she said; thus addressed, Bṛhaspati replied to her, smiling.
You must never instruct Vinaya in any way; he, delighted, forcibly approached her for union.
Then the embryo, rejoicing, spoke to Brihaspati: 'Father Brihaspati, I was already present here before.'
'Your seed is unfailing, and there is no room for two; so addressed by the embryo, he replied angrily.'
'Because you have hindered me at such a time, when all beings desire this, therefore you shall enter into deep darkness for long.'
The entrance of the mother, covered between her feet, was blocked by Brihaspati's seed, and thus the child was restrained between the two.
Seeing the boy immediately born, Mamatā said: 'I will go to my own house, O Brihaspati; this is Bharadvāja.'
Having spoken thus, when she had gone, the son was abandoned at that moment; being told 'bear him well,' Bharadvāja then became so.
Seeing the child abandoned by both mother and father, the Maruts, out of compassion, took Bharadvāja with them.
At that time, Bharata performed sacrifices with the Maruts, with desired and occasional rites, longing for a son.
When that lord, the sacrificer, did not obtain a son, he again performed the Marutsoma sacrifice for a son.
By that, the Maruts were pleased with him through the Marutsoma; then they gave Bharadvāja, the wise son of Brihaspati, as his son.
Then Bharata, having obtained Bharadvāja as a son, said: 'Now that my lineage is restored, I am fulfilled by you, O illustrious one.'
Previously, his begetting of a son was in vain; therefore, Bharadvāja was called Vitatha.
Thus, Bharadvāja, though a Brahmin by birth, became a Kshatriya; he is remembered as Dvimukhyāyana, the one with two fathers.
Then, when Vitatha was born, Bharata went to heaven; Vitatha's heir on earth was Bhuvamanyu.

The four sons of Bhuvamanyu were like great elements: Bṛhatkṣatra, mighty in valor, Nara, and Gāgra, strong in might.
Nara's son was Saṃkṛti; his two powerful sons were Guruvīrya and Trideva, known as the Saṃkṛtis.
The heirs of Gāgra were born from Śinibaddha; these are remembered as the Gāgryas, twice-born Kshatriyas.
And Bhima, the son of great valor, was therefore a devourer; his wife Vishala indeed bore him three sons.

She bore Trayyaruni, Pushkarini, and the third, a monkey; these two are renowned as great sages, and the monkey is of noble warrior lineage.
The Gagras, Sankritas, and Viryas are twice-born, endowed with warrior qualities; they have taken refuge in the Angirasa branch, which will be spoken of as belonging to Brihatkshatra.
The heir of Brihatkshatra was named Suhotra, righteous in conduct; and Suhotra's heir was Hastin, by whom this city was formerly established and named Hastinapura.
