ब्रह्मक्षत्रान्तरः सत्याविजयो नाम विश्रुतः। विजयस्य धृतिः पुत्र स्तस्य पुत्रो धृतव्रतः ।। ३७.
Between Brahmin and Kshatriya, Satyā's son was known as Vijaya. Vijaya's son was Dhṛti, and his son was Dhṛtavrata.
धृतव्रतस्य पुत्रस्तु सत्यकर्मा महायशाः। सत्यकर्मसुतश्चापि सूतस्त्वधिरथस्तु वै ।। ३७.
Dhṛtavrata's son was Satyakarma, renowned for his great deeds. Satyakarma's son was the charioteer, Adhiratha.
स कर्णं परिजग्राह तेन कर्णस्तु सूतजः। एतद्वः कथितं सर्वं कर्णे यद्वै प्रचोदितम् ।। ३७.
He adopted Karṇa; thus Karṇa became the son of a charioteer. All this has been told to you as prompted regarding Karṇa.
एतेऽङ्गवंशजाः सर्वे राजानः कीर्त्तिता मया। विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्या च पूरोस्तु श्रृणुत प्रजाः ।। ३७.
All these kings descended from Anga have been recounted by me. Now, listen in detail and order to the descendants of Pūru.
सूत उवाच।। पूरोः पुत्रो महाबाहू राजासीज्जनमेजयः। अविद्धस्तु सुतस्तस्य यः प्राचीमजयद्दिशम् ।। ३७.
The Sūta said: Pūru's son was the mighty-armed King Janamejaya. His son was Aviddha, who conquered the eastern direction.
अविद्धतः प्रवीरस्तु मनस्युरभवत्सुतः। राजाथो जयदो नाम मनस्योरभवत्सुतः ।। ३७.
From Aviddha came Pravīra, and Manasyu was his son. Then, King Jayada was born as Manasyu's son.
दायादस्तस्य चाप्यासीद्धुन्धुर्नाम महीपतिः। धुन्धोर्बहु गवी पुत्रः सञ्जातिस्तस्य चात्मजः ।। ३७.
His heir was Dhundhu, a great king. Dhundhu's son was Bahugavi, and his son was Sañjāti.
सञ्जातेरथ रौद्राश्वस्तस्य पुत्रान्निबोधत। रौद्राश्वस्य घृताच्यां वै दशाप्सरसि सूनवः ।। ३७.
Now hear of the sons of Sañjati's son, Raudrāśva. Raudrāśva had ten sons by Ghṛtācī, the Apsaras.
रजेयुश्च कृते युश्च वक्षेयुः स्थण्डिलेयु च। घृतेयुश्च जलेयुश्च स्थलेयुश्चैव सप्तमः ।। ३७.
Rajeyu, Kṛteyu, Vakṣeyu, Sthaṇḍileyu, Ghṛteyu, Jaleyu, and Sthaleyu were the seven.
धर्मेयुः सन्नतेयुश्च वनेयुर्द्दशमस्तु सः। रुद्रा शूद्रा च मद्रा च शुभा जामलजा तथा ।। ३७.
Dharmeyu, Sannateyu, and Vaneyu were the three others, making ten. Rudra, Śūdra, Madra, Śubhā, and Jāmalajā as well.
तला खला च सप्तैता या च गोपजला स्मृता। तथा ताम्ररसा चैव रत्नकूटी च तादृशी ।। ३७.
Talā, Khalā, and these seven, as well as what is known as Gopajalā; likewise, Tāmrarasā and Ratnakūṭī, such as these.
आत्रेयो वंशतस्तासां भर्त्ता नाम्ना प्रभाकरः। अनादृष्टस्तु राजर्षी रिवेयुस्तस्य चात्मजः ।। ३७.
Ātreya, from the lineage of those, was their lord named Prabhākara; Anādṛṣṭa was the royal sage, and Riveyu was his son.
रिवेयोर्ज्वलना नाम भार्या वै तक्षकात्मजा। यस्यां देव्यां स राजर्षी रन्तिं नाम त्वजीजनत् ।। ३७.
Riveyu's wife was named Jvalanā, daughter of Takṣaka; in that noble lady, the royal sage begot a son named Ranti.
रन्तिर्नारः सरस्वत्यां पुत्रानजनयच्छुभान्। त्रसुं तथा प्रतिरथं ध्रुवञ्चैवातिधार्मिकम् ।। ३७.
Ranti, son of Nara and Sarasvatī, begot virtuous sons: Trasū, Pratiratha, and Dhruva, who was exceedingly righteous.
गौरी कन्या च विख्याता मान्धातुर्जननी शुभा। धुर्यः प्रतिरथस्यापि कण्ठस्तस्याभवत् सुतः ।। ३७.
Gaurī, the renowned daughter, was the auspicious mother of Māndhātṛ; Dhurya, son of Pratiratha, had a son named Kaṇṭha.
मेधातिथिः सुरस्तस्य यस्मात् काण्ठायना द्विजाः। इतिनानुयमस्यासीत् कन्या साजनयत्सुतान् ।। ३७.
Medhātithi, a divine sage, was his son; from Kaṇṭha arose the Kāṇṭhāyana brahmins. Thus, in the lineage, there was a daughter who bore sons.
त्रसुः सुदयितंपुत्रं मलिनं ब्रह्मवादिनम्। उपदातं ततो लेभे चतुरस्त्विति सात्मजान् ।। ३७.
Trasū had a beloved son, Malina, who was a speaker of Brahman; then Upadāta was born, and thus he had four sons.
सुष्मन्तमथ दुष्यन्तं प्रवीरमनघन्तथा। चक्रवर्त्ती ततो जज्ञे दौष्यन्तिर्नृपसत्तमः ।। ३७.
Suṣmanta, Duṣyanta, Pravīra, and Anagha; thereafter, the emperor was born, Dauṣyanti, the foremost among kings.
शकुन्तलायां भरतो यस्य नाम्ना तु भारतम्। दुष्यन्तं प्रति राजानं वागुवाचाशरीरिणी ।। ३७.
In Śakuntalā, Bharata was born, after whom the land is called Bhārata; to Duṣyanta, the king, a bodiless voice spoke.
माता भस्त्रा पितुः पुत्रो येन जातः स एव सः। भरस्व पुत्रं दुष्यन्तं सत्यमाह शकुन्तला ।। ३७.
The mother is the bellows, the father is the son, by whom he was born, he is indeed the same; 'Accept your son Duṣyanta,' said Śakuntalā, speaking the truth.
रेतोधाः पुत्रं नयति नरदेव यमक्षयात्। त्वञ्चास्य धाता गर्भस्य मावमंस्थाः शकुन्तलाम् ।। ३७.
The one who deposits the seed leads the son from the realm of Yama, O king; and you are the nourisher of the embryo, do not disregard Śakuntalā.
भरतस्त्रिसृषु स्त्रीषु नव पुत्रानजीजनत्। नाभ्यनन्दच्च तान् राजा नानुरूपान्ममेत्युत ।। ३७.
Bharata begot nine sons from three women; the king did not accept them, saying, 'They are not suitable for me.'
ततस्ता मातरः क्रुद्धाः पुत्रान्निन्युर्यमक्षयम्। ततस्तस्य नरेन्द्रस्य विततं पुत्रजन्म तत् ।। ३७.
Then those mothers, angered, sent their sons to the realm of Yama; thus, for that king, the birth of sons was spread out.
ततो मरुद्भिरानीय पुत्रस्तु स बृहस्पतेः। सङ्क्रामितो भरद्वाजो मरुद्भिः क्रतुभिर्विभुः ।। ३७.
Then, brought by the Maruts, the son was given to Bṛhaspati; Bharadvāja was transferred by the Maruts, powerful through sacrifices.
तत्रैवोदारहन्तीदं भरद्वाजस्य धीमतः। जन्मसङ्क्रमणञ्चैव मरुद्भिर्भरताय वै ।। ३७.
There, the noble Bharadvāja's birth and transfer by the Maruts to Bharata are described.
पत्न्यामासन्नगर्भायामशिजः संस्थितः किलः। भ्रातुर्भार्यां स दृष्ट्वाथ बृहस्पतिरुवाच ह। अलंकृत्य तनुं स्वान्तु मैथुनं देहि मे शुभे ।। ३७.
When his wife was near to giving birth, the sage was present; seeing his brother's wife, Bṛhaspati spoke: 'Adorn your body, O beautiful one, grant me union.'
एवमुक्ताऽब्रवीदेन मन्तर्वत्नी ह्यहं विभो। गर्भः परिणतश्चायं ब्रह्म व्याहरते गिरा ।। ३७.
Thus addressed, she replied: 'O lord, I am pregnant; the embryo is mature, and utters Brahman with its voice.'
अमोघरेतास्त्वञ्चापि धर्मश्चैव विगर्हितः। एवमुक्तोऽब्रवीदेनां स्मयमानो बृहस्पतिः ।। ३७.
'Your seed is unfailing, yet the act is unrighteous,' she said; thus addressed, Bṛhaspati replied to her, smiling.
विनयो नोपदेष्टव्यस्त्वया मम कथञ्चन। हर्षमाणः प्रसह्यैनां मैथुनायोपचक्रमे ।। ३७.
You must never instruct Vinaya in any way; he, delighted, forcibly approached her for union.
ततो बृहस्पतिं गर्भो हर्षमाणमुवाच ह। सन्निविष्टो ह्यहं पूर्वमिह तात बृहस्पते ।। ३७.
Then the embryo, rejoicing, spoke to Brihaspati: 'Father Brihaspati, I was already present here before.'
