तस्यापानं विना चैव योग्याभावो भविष्यति। तां स दीर्घतमाश्चैव कुक्षौ स्पृष्ट्वेदमब्रववीत् ।। ३७.
'Without excrement, he will be unfit in some way.' Then Dīrghatamas touched her womb and spoke these words.
प्राशितं दधि यत्तेऽद्य ममाङ्गाद्वै शुचिस्मिते । तेन ते पूरितो गर्भः पौर्णमास्यामिवोदधिः ।। ३७.
'The curds you have eaten today from my hand, O fair-smiling one, have filled your womb, just as the ocean is filled on the full moon.'
भविष्यन्ति कुमारास्ते पञ्च देवसुतोपमाः। तेजस्विनः पराक्रान्ता यज्वानो धार्मिकास्तथा ।। ३७.
'You will have five sons, equal to the sons of the gods—brilliant, valiant, performers of sacrifice, and righteous.'
ततोङ्गस्तु सुदेष्णाया ज्येष्ठपुत्रो व्यजायत। वङ्गस्तस्मात्कलिङ्गस्तु पुण्ड्रो ब्रह्मस्तथैव च ।। ३७.
Then from Sudeṣṇā was born Aṅga, her eldest son; from him came Vaṅga, then Kaliṅga, Puṇḍra, and Brahma as well.
वंशभाजस्तु पञ्चैते बलेः क्षेत्रेऽभवंस्तदा। इत्येते दीर्घतमसा बलेर्दत्ताः सुताः पुरा ।। ३७.
At that time, these five descendants were born in the lineage of Bali; thus, these sons were formerly given to Dīrghatamas by Bali.
प्रजास्त्वपहतास्तस्य ब्रह्मणा कारणं प्रति। अपत्या मात्यदारेषु स्वेषु मा भून्महात्मनः ।। ३७.
But his offspring were deprived by Brahmā for a certain reason, so that the great-souled one would not have children with his own wives.
ततो मनुष्ययोन्यां वै जनयामास स प्रजाः। सुरभिर्दीर्घतमसमथ प्रीतो वचोऽब्रवीत् ।। ३७.
Then he produced offspring among human women; Surabhi, pleased, spoke these words to Dīrghatamas.
विचार्य यस्माद्गोधर्म्मं त्वमेवं कृतवानसि । तेन न्यायेन मुमुचे ह्यहं प्रीतोस्मि तेन ते ।। ३७.
Because you have acted according to the law of the cows, having considered it, I am pleased with you and, by that same justice, I release you.
तस्मात्तव तमो दीर्घं निस्तुदाम्यद्य पश्य वै। बार्हस्पत्यञ्च यत्तेऽन्यत्पापं सन्तिष्ठते तनौ ।। ३७.
Therefore, today I dispel your deep darkness—see now; and whatever other sin of Bārhaspatya remains in your body.
जरामृत्युभयञ्चैव आघ्राय प्रणुदामि ते। ह्याघ्रातमात्रः सोऽपश्यत सद्यस्तमसि नाशिते ।। ३७.
I inhale and drive away from you both old age and death; as soon as it was inhaled, he immediately saw, with the darkness destroyed.
आयुष्मांश्च युवा चैव चक्षुष्मांश्च ततोऽभवत्। गवा दीर्घतमाः सोऽथ गौतमः समपद्यत ।। ३७.
Then Dīrghatamas became youthful, long-lived, and sighted; and from the cows, he became known as Gautama.
कक्षीवांस्तु ततो गत्वा सह पित्रा गिरिप्रजाम्। यथोद्दिष्टं हि पित्रर्थे चचार विपुलं तपः ।। ३७.
Then Kakṣīvān, together with his father, went to the mountain people and, as instructed, performed great austerity for his father's sake.
ततः कालेन महता तमसा भावितः सवै। विधूय मनुजो दोषान् ब्रह्मण्यं प्राप्तवान् प्रभुः ।। ३७.
After a long time, having been purified from darkness, that man, having cast off faults, attained devotion to Brahman.
ततोऽब्रवीत् पिता चैनं पुत्रवानस्म्यहं प्रभो। सत्पुत्रेण त्वया तात कृतार्थोऽस्मि यशस्विना ।। ३७.
Then his father said to him, 'O lord, I am one who has a son; O illustrious one, I am fulfilled by you, my true son.'
युक्तात्मा हि ततः सोऽथ प्राप्तवान् ब्रह्मणा क्षयम्। ब्रह्मण्यं प्राप्य कक्षीवान् सहस्रमसृजत् सुतान् ।। ३७.
Then, having mastered himself, Kakṣīvān attained the abode of Brahmā; having attained devotion to Brahman, he begot a thousand sons.
कृष्णाङ्गा गौतमास्ते वै स्मृताः कक्षीवतः सुताः। इत्येष दीर्घतमसो बलेर्वैरोचनस्य वै ।। ३७.
Those sons of Kakṣīvān, known as Gautamas, were dark-complexioned; thus is the account of Dīrghatamas, son of Bali, son of Virocana.
समागमः समाख्यातः सन्तानञ्चोभयोस्तयोः। बलिस्तानबिषिच्येह पञ्च पुत्रानकल्मषान् ।। ३७.
The meeting and lineage of both these lines has been described; Bali installed those five sinless sons here.
कृतार्थः सोऽपि योगात्मा योगमाश्रित्य च प्रभुः। अदृश्यः सर्वभूतानां कालाकाङ्क्षी चरत्युत ।। ३७.
He too, accomplished and possessed of yoga, having resorted to yoga, moves about unseen by all beings, awaiting the proper time.
तत्राङ्गस्य तु राजर्षे राजासीद्दधिवाहनः। सापराधसुदेष्णाया अनपानोऽभवनृपः ।। ३७.
There, among the descendants of Aṅga, the royal sage, was King Dadhivāhana; due to the fault of Sudeṣṇā, King Anapāna was born.
अनपानस्य पुत्रस्तु राजा दिविरथः स्मृतः। पुत्रो दिविरथस्यासीद्विद्वान् धर्मरथो नृपः ।। ३७.
Anapāna's son was the king known as Diviratha; Diviratha's son was the wise king Dharmaratha.
स वै धर्मरथः श्रीमान् येन विष्णुपदे गिरौ। सोमः शक्रेण सह वै यज्ञे पीतो महात्मना ।। ३७.
That illustrious Dharmaratha, by whom Soma was drunk together with Indra in a sacrifice on Mount Viṣṇupada, the abode of the great soul.
सूनुर्धर्मरथस्यापि राजा चित्ररथोऽभवत्। अथ चित्ररथस्यापि राजा दशरथः अभवत्। लोमपाद इति ख्यातो यस्य शान्ता सुताऽभवत् ।। ३७.
Dharmaratha's son was King Citraratha; and Citraratha's son was King Daśaratha, known as Lomapāda, whose daughter was Śāntā.
(स तु दाशरथिर्वीरश्चतुरङो महामनाः। ऋष्यशृङप्रसादेन जज्ञेऽथ कुलवर्धनः ।।) चतुरङश्च पुत्रस्तु पृथुलाश्च इति श्रुतः। पृथुलाश्च सुतश्चापि चम्पो नाम बभूव ह चम्पावती पुरी चम्पा चतुर्वर्णा च वै वसत्। षष्टिवर्षसहस्त्राणि चम्पावत्यां पुराऽवसत् ।। ब्राह्मणैः क्षत्रियैर्वैश्यैः सर्वे स्वे धर्मानुष्ठिते। सर्वे धर्म वै तपसा सर्वे विष्णुपरायणाः जज्ञे वै तण्डिकरतस्य वारणं शक्रवारणम्। आनयामास स महीं मन्धोर्वाहनमुत्तमम् ।। ३७.
That heroic son of Dasharatha, possessing a great mind and fourfold army, was born by the grace of Rishyasringa, and became the enhancer of his lineage. His son was known as Chaturanga, and another son, Pṛthulāśa, is also mentioned. Pṛthulāśa's son was named Campa. The city Campāvatī, called Campā, was inhabited by four classes. For sixty thousand years, he dwelled in Campāvatī. All, Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas, performed their own duties. All were devoted to dharma and austerity, and all were followers of Vishnu. Taṇḍikaraṭa's son, Vāraṇa, called Śakravāraṇa, was born. He brought the earth the excellent Mandhor vehicle.
*(पाठभेदः) (मंत्रैर्वाहनमुत्तमम्) हर्य्यङ्गस्य तु दायादो राजा भद्ररथः किल। अथ भद्ररथस्यासीद्बृहत्कर्मा प्रजेश्वरः ।। ३७.
The heir of Haryyanga was King Bhadraratha. Then, Bhadraratha's son was Bṛhatkarmā, lord of the people.
बृहद्रथः सुतस्तस्य तस्माज्जज्ञे बृहन्मनाः। बृहन्मनास्तु राजेन्द्रं जनयामास वै सुतम् ।। ३७.
Bṛhadratha was his son, and from him was born Bṛhanmanā. Bṛhanmanā, O king, begot a son.
नाम्ना जयद्रथं नाम तस्मादॄढरथो नृपः। आसीदॄढरथस्यापि विश्वजिज्जनमेजयः ।। ३७.
By name, Jayadratha was born; from him, the king Ṛḍharatha arose. From Ṛḍharatha, Viśvajit Janamejaya was born.
दायादस्तस्य चाङ्गेभ्यो यस्मात् कर्णोऽभवन्नृपः। कर्णस्य शूरसेनस्तु द्विज स्तस्यात्मजः स्मृतः ।। ३७.
His heir was from the Angas, from whom Karṇa became king. Karṇa's son was Śūrasena, remembered as a twice-born.
सूतात्मजः कथं कर्णः कथं चाङ्गस्य वंशजः। एतदिच्छामहे श्रोतुमत्यर्थं कुशलो ह्यसि ।। ३७.
How was Karṇa, the son of a charioteer, also a descendant of Anga? We wish to hear this in detail, for you are indeed skilled.
बृहद्भानोः सुतो जज्ञे नाम्ना राजा बृहन्मनाः। तस्य पत्नीद्वयं चासीच्चैद्यस्योभे च ते सुते ।। ३७.
Bṛhadbhānu's son was born, named King Bṛhanmanā. He had two wives, both daughters of the Caidya; each bore him a son.
यशोदेवी च सत्या च ताभ्यां वंशस्तु भिद्यते। जयद्रथस्तु राजेन्द्रो यशोदेव्यां व्यजायत ।। ३७.
Yaśodevī and Satyā—by them the lineage was divided. King Jayadratha was born to Yaśodevī.
