Vayu Purana

सूत उवाच।। कर्मण्यस्मिस्ततः क्रूरे तस्य बुद्धिरजायत। निर्भत्स्य चैव बहुशो बाहुभ्यां परिगृह्य च। कोष्ठे समुद्रे प्रक्षिप्य गङ्गाम्भसि समुत्सृजत् ।। ३७.

The Sūta said: Then, in that cruel act, such a thought arose in his mind; after rebuking him repeatedly and seizing him with his arms, he placed him in a chest and cast him into the waters of the Ganges.

उह्यमानः समुद्रस्तु सप्ताहं स्रोतसा तदा। तं सस्त्रीको बलिर्नाम राजा धर्मार्थतत्त्ववित्। अपश्यन्मज्जमानन्तु स्रोतसाभ्याशमागतम् ।। ३७.

Carried by the current, the chest floated in the ocean for seven days; then Bali, the righteous king, expert in the essence of dharma and artha, saw him, together with his wife, as he was sinking near the current.

तं गृहीत्वा स धर्मात्मा बलिर्वैरोचनस्तदा। अन्तःपुरे जुगोपैनं भक्ष्यैर्भोज्यैश्च तर्पयन् ।। ३७.

Taking him up, Bali, son of Virocana, righteous in soul, sheltered him in the inner apartments, nourishing him with food and delicacies.

प्रीतः स वै वरेणाथ च्छन्दयामास वै बलिम्। स च तस्माद्वरं वव्रे पुत्रार्थं दानवर्षभः ।। ३७.

Pleased, he offered Bali a boon of his choice; and Bali, the bull among the Dānavas, chose from him a boon for the sake of offspring.

सन्तानार्थं महाभाग भार्यया मम मानद। पुत्रान् धर्मार्थसंयुक्तानुत्पादयितुमर्हसि ।। ३७.

'O most fortunate one, giver of honor, together with my wife, grant me sons endowed with righteousness and prosperity, for the sake of progeny.'

एवमुक्तस्तु तेनर्षिस्तथास्त्वित्युक्तवान् हि तम् । सुदेष्णां नाम बार्यां वै राजास्मै प्राहिणोत्तदा ।। ३७.

Thus addressed by him, the sage replied, 'So be it.' Then the king sent his wife named Sudeṣṇā to him.

अन्धं वृद्धञ्च तं दृष्ट्वा न सा देवी जगाम ह । स्वाञ्च धात्रेयकीं तस्मै भूषयित्वा व्यसर्जयत् ।। ३७.

But seeing that he was blind and old, the queen did not go herself; instead, she adorned her maidservant and sent her to him.

कक्षीवचक्षुषौ तस्यां शूद्रयोन्यामृषिर्वशी। जनयामास धर्मात्मा पुत्रावेतौ महोजसौ ।। ३७.

In that maidservant of Śūdra birth, the self-controlled sage, righteous in soul, begot two sons, Kakṣīvat and Cakṣuṣ, both of great energy.

कक्षिवचक्षुषौ तौ तु दृष्ट्वा राजा बलिस्तदा। प्राधीतौ विधिवत्सम्यगीश्वरौ ब्रह्मवादिनौ ।। ३७.

When King Bali saw Kakṣīvat and Cakṣuṣ, he had them properly educated in all rites, and they became masters, learned in the Vedas.

सिद्धौ प्रत्यक्षधर्माणौ बुद्धौ श्रेष्ठतमावपि। ममैताविति होवाच बलिर्वैरोचनस्त्वृषिम् ।। ३७.

They attained perfection, were manifest in righteousness, and excelled in wisdom; Bali, son of Virocana, said to the sage, 'These are mine.'

नेत्युवाच ततस्तन्तु ममैताविति चाब्रवीत्। उत्पन्नौ शूद्रयोनौ तु भवच्छद्मा सुरोत्तमौ ।। ३७.

The sage replied, 'No,' but Bali insisted, 'These are mine.' Though born of a Śūdra woman, these two excellent beings are yours in disguise.

अनधं बृद्धं च मां मत्वा सुदेष्णा महिषी तव। प्राहिणोदवमानाय शूद्रां धात्रेयकीं मम ।। ३७.

Thinking me blind and old, your queen Sudeṣṇā, out of disdain, sent her Śūdra maidservant to me.

ततः प्रसादयामास पुनस्तमृषिसत्तमम्। बलिर्भार्यां सुदेष्णां च भर्त्सयामास वै प्रभुः ।। ३७.

Then Bali sought to appease that eminent sage again, and the lord rebuked his wife Sudeṣṇā.

पुनश्चैनामलंकृत्य ऋषये प्रत्यपादयत्। तां स दीर्घतमा देवीमब्रवीद्यदि मां शुभे ।। ३७.

Once more, after adorning her, he gave Sudeṣṇā to the sage; to her, the sage Dīrghatamas said, 'O auspicious one, if you—'

दध्ना लवणमिश्रेण स्वब्य(व्य)क्तं नग्नकं तथा। लिहिष्यस्यजुगुप्सन्ती ह्यापादतलमस्तकम् ।। ३७.

'—will lick this mixture of curds and salt, as well as this naked thing, without disgust, from foot to head—'

ततस्त्वं प्राप्स्यसे देवि पुत्रांश्च मनसेप्सितान्। तस्य सा तद्वचो देवी सर्वं कृतवती तथा ।। ३७.

'—then, O queen, you will obtain sons as you desire.' The queen did everything just as he said.

अपानञ्च समासाद्य जुगुप्सन्ती न्यवर्जयत्। तामुवाच ततः सर्षिर्यत्ते परिहृतं शुभे। विनापानं कुमारं त्वं जनयिष्यसि पूर्वजम् ।। ३७.

But when it came to the excrement, she was disgusted and avoided it; then the sage said to her, 'O auspicious one, since you avoided that, you will bear your eldest son without excrement.'

ततस्तं दीर्घतमसं सा देवी प्रत्युवाच ह। नार्हसि त्वं महाभाग पुत्रं दातुं ममेदृशम् ।। ३७.

Then the queen said to Dīrghatamas, 'O blessed one, you should not give me such a son.'

तवापराधो देव्येष नान्यथा भवितानु वै । देवी दानीञ्च ते पुत्रमहं दास्यामि सुव्रते ।। ३७.

'This is your fault, O queen, and it cannot be otherwise. Still, O virtuous lady, I will give you a son now.'

तस्यापानं विना चैव योग्याभावो भविष्यति। तां स दीर्घतमाश्चैव कुक्षौ स्पृष्ट्वेदमब्रववीत् ।। ३७.

'Without excrement, he will be unfit in some way.' Then Dīrghatamas touched her womb and spoke these words.

प्राशितं दधि यत्तेऽद्य ममाङ्गाद्वै शुचिस्मिते । तेन ते पूरितो गर्भः पौर्णमास्यामिवोदधिः ।। ३७.

'The curds you have eaten today from my hand, O fair-smiling one, have filled your womb, just as the ocean is filled on the full moon.'

भविष्यन्ति कुमारास्ते पञ्च देवसुतोपमाः। तेजस्विनः पराक्रान्ता यज्वानो धार्मिकास्तथा ।। ३७.

'You will have five sons, equal to the sons of the gods—brilliant, valiant, performers of sacrifice, and righteous.'

ततोङ्गस्तु सुदेष्णाया ज्येष्ठपुत्रो व्यजायत। वङ्गस्तस्मात्कलिङ्गस्तु पुण्ड्रो ब्रह्मस्तथैव च ।। ३७.

Then from Sudeṣṇā was born Aṅga, her eldest son; from him came Vaṅga, then Kaliṅga, Puṇḍra, and Brahma as well.

वंशभाजस्तु पञ्चैते बलेः क्षेत्रेऽभवंस्तदा। इत्येते दीर्घतमसा बलेर्दत्ताः सुताः पुरा ।। ३७.

At that time, these five descendants were born in the lineage of Bali; thus, these sons were formerly given to Dīrghatamas by Bali.

प्रजास्त्वपहतास्तस्य ब्रह्मणा कारणं प्रति। अपत्या मात्यदारेषु स्वेषु मा भून्महात्मनः ।। ३७.

But his offspring were deprived by Brahmā for a certain reason, so that the great-souled one would not have children with his own wives.

ततो मनुष्ययोन्यां वै जनयामास स प्रजाः। सुरभिर्दीर्घतमसमथ प्रीतो वचोऽब्रवीत् ।। ३७.

Then he produced offspring among human women; Surabhi, pleased, spoke these words to Dīrghatamas.

विचार्य यस्माद्गोधर्म्मं त्वमेवं कृतवानसि । तेन न्यायेन मुमुचे ह्यहं प्रीतोस्मि तेन ते ।। ३७.

Because you have acted according to the law of the cows, having considered it, I am pleased with you and, by that same justice, I release you.

तस्मात्तव तमो दीर्घं निस्तुदाम्यद्य पश्य वै। बार्हस्पत्यञ्च यत्तेऽन्यत्पापं सन्तिष्ठते तनौ ।। ३७.

Therefore, today I dispel your deep darkness—see now; and whatever other sin of Bārhaspatya remains in your body.

जरामृत्युभयञ्चैव आघ्राय प्रणुदामि ते। ह्याघ्रातमात्रः सोऽपश्यत सद्यस्तमसि नाशिते ।। ३७.

I inhale and drive away from you both old age and death; as soon as it was inhaled, he immediately saw, with the darkness destroyed.
