म्लेच्छराष्ट्राधिपाः सर्वे ह्युदीचीं दिशमाश्रिताः। अनोः पुत्रा महात्मानस्त्रयः परमधार्म्मिकाः ।। ३७.
All were rulers of foreign lands, settled in the northern direction; Anu had three great and supremely righteous sons.
सभानरश्च पक्षश्च परपक्षस्तथैव च। सभानरस्य पुत्रस्तु विद्वान् कालानलो नृपः ।। ३७.
They were Sabhānara, Pakṣa, and Parapakṣa; Sabhānara's son was the wise king Kālānala.
कालानलस्य धर्म्मात्मा सृञ्जयो नाम धार्मिकः । सृञ्जयस्याभवत् पुत्रो वीरो राजा पुरञ्जयः ।। ३७.
There was a righteous king named Sṛñjaya, whose nature was virtuous like the fire of time; Sṛñjaya had a son, the heroic king Purañjaya.
जनमेजयो महा सत्वः पुरञ्जयसुतोऽभवत्। जनमेजयस्य राजर्षेर्महाशालोऽभवभृपः ।। ३७.
Janamejaya, of great strength, was born as the son of Purañjaya; Janamejaya, the royal sage, had a son named Mahāśāla, who became king.
आसीदिन्द्रसमो राजा प्रतिष्ठितयशा दिवि। महामनाः सुतस्तस्य महा शालस्य धार्मिकः ।। ३७.
There was a king, equal to Indra, whose fame was established in the heavens; his virtuous son was Mahāmanā, born to Mahāśāla.
सप्तद्वीपेश्वरो राजा चक्रवर्त्ती महायशाः। महामनास्तु पुत्रौ द्वौ जनयामास विश्रुतौ ।। ३७.
The king Mahāmanā, lord of the seven continents and a universal emperor of great renown, begot two illustrious sons.
उशीनरञ्च धर्मज्ञं तितिक्षुञ्चैव धार्मिकम्। उशीनरस्य पत्न्यस्तु पञ्च राजर्षिवंशजाः ।। ३७.
He begot Uśīnara, who knew righteousness, and Titikṣu, who was also virtuous; Uśīnara's wives gave birth to five sons, all descended from royal sages.
मृगा कृमी नवा दर्वा पञ्चमी च दृषद्वती। उशीनरस्य पुत्रास्तु पञ्च तासु कुलोद्वहाः। तपसा ते सुमहता जातवृद्धाश्च धार्मिकाः ।। ३७.
Mṛgā, Kṛmī, Navā, Darvā, and the fifth, Dṛṣadvatī, were the five wives of Uśīnara; from them came five sons, leaders of their clans, who grew through great austerity and were righteous.
मृगायास्तु मृगः पुत्रो नवाया नव एव तु। कृम्याः कृमिस्तु दर्वायाः सुव्रतो नाम धार्मिकः ।। ३७.
Mṛgā's son was Mṛga; Navā's son was Nava; Kṛmī's son was Kṛmi; Darvā's son was named Suvrata, who was virtuous.
दृषद्वतीसुतश्चापि शिविरौशीनरो द्विजाः। शिवेः शिवपुरं ख्यातं यौधेयन्तु मृगस्य तु ।। ३७.
Dṛṣadvatī's son was Śivi, O twice-born, and Uśīnara; Śivi's city was famed as Śivapura, and Mṛga's was known as Yaudheya.
नवस्य नवराष्ट्रन्तु कृमेस्तु कृमिला पुरी। सुव्रतस्य तथा वृष्टा शिविपुत्रान्निबोधत ।। ३७.
Nava's territory was Navarāṣṭra; Kṛmi's city was Kṛmilā; likewise, Suvrata's was Vṛṣṭā; now hear of Śivi's sons.
शिवेस्तु शिवयः पुत्राश्चत्वारो लोकसम्मताः। वृषदर्भः सुवीरस्तु केकयो मद्रकस्तथा ।। ३७.
Śivi had four sons, renowned in the world: Vṛṣadarbha, Suvīra, Kekaya, and Madraka.
तेषाञ्जनपदाः स्फीताः केकया माद्रकास्तथा। वृषदर्भाः सूचिदर्भास्तितिक्षोः श्रृणुत प्रजाः ।। ३७.
Their lands flourished: Kekayas, Madrakas, Vṛṣadarbhas, and Sūcidarbhas; now hear of the people of Titikṣu.
तैतिक्षुरभवद्राजा पूर्वस्यान्दिशि विश्रुतः। उशद्रथो महाबाहुस्तस्य हेमः सुतोऽभवत् ।। ३७.
Taitikṣu became a famous king in the eastern direction; his son was Uśadratha, mighty-armed.
हेमस्य सुतपा जज्ञे सुतः सुतयशा बली । जातो मनुष्ययोन्यां वै क्षीणे वंशे प्रजेप्सया ।। ३७.
Hema's son was Sutapā; Sutapā's son was Sutayaśā, powerful, who was born among humans when the lineage was diminished, desiring offspring.
महायोगी स तु बलिर्बद्धो यः स महामनाः। पुत्रानुत्पादयामास चातुर्वर्ण्यकरान् भुवि ।। ३७.
That Bali, a great yogi, was bound, yet he was magnanimous; he produced sons who established the four social orders on earth.
अङ्गं स जनयामास वङ्गं सुह्लं तथैव च। पुण्ड्रं कलिङ्गञ्च तथा बालेयं क्षत्रमुच्यते ।। ३७.
He begot Aṅga, Vaṅga, Suhla, Puṇḍra, Kaliṅga, and Bāleya; these are known as the Kṣatriya clans.
बालेया ब्राह्मणाश्चैव तस्य वंशकराः प्रभोः। बलेस्तु ब्रह्मणा दत्ता वराः प्रीतेन धीमते ।। ३७.
The Bāleyas and the Brāhmaṇas were his descendants, O lord; to Bali, the wise, Brahmā granted boons out of affection.
महायोगित्वमायुश्च कल्पायुःपरिमाणकम्। संग्रामे चाप्यजेयत्वं धर्मे चैव प्रभावना ।। ३७.
He was granted great yogic power, long life measured by a kalpa, invincibility in battle, and eminence in righteousness.
त्रैलोक्यदर्शनञ्चैव प्राधान्यं प्रसवे तथा। बले चाप्रति मत्वं वै धर्मतत्त्वार्थदर्शनम् ।। ३७.
He received the vision of the three worlds, preeminence in progeny, unmatched strength, and insight into the essence of righteousness and its meaning.
चतुरो नियतान् वर्णान् त्वं वै स्थापयितेति च। इत्युक्तो विभुना राजा बलिः शान्तिम्परां ययौ ।। ३७.
You shall establish the four fixed classes—so spoke the Lord; thus addressed, King Bali attained supreme peace.
कालेन महता विद्वान् स्वं वै स्थानमुपागतः। तेषां जनपदाः स्फीता वङ्गाङ्गसुह्लकास्तथा ।। ३७.
In due course, the wise one reached his own place; their lands flourished, including Vanga, Anga, and Suhila.
पुण्ड्राः कलिङ्गाश्च तथा तेषां वंशं निबेधत। तस्य ते तनयाः सर्वे क्षेत्रजा मुनिसम्भवाः। सम्भूता दीर्घतमसः सुदेण्णायां महौजसः ।। ३७.
Pundras and Kalingas likewise—now hear of their lineage: all his sons were born of the field, descended from sages, begotten in Sudenna by Dirghatamas, of great might.
ऋषय ऊचुः। कथं बलेः सुताः पञ्च जनिताः क्षेत्रजाः प्रभो। ऋषिणा दीर्घतमसा एतन्नो ब्रूहि पृच्छताम् ।। ३७.
The sages said: How were five sons of Bali born of the field, O Lord, by the sage Dirghatamas? Tell us, as we ask.
सूत उवाच।। अशिजो नाम विख्यात आसीद्धीमानृषिः पुरा। भार्या वै ममता नाम बभूवास्य महात्मनः ।। ३७.
The Suta said: There was once a renowned and wise sage named Ashija; his wife was called Mamata, a woman of great soul.
अशिजस्य कनीयांस्तु पुरोधा यो दिवौकसाम्। बृहस्पतिर्बृहत्तेजा ममतां सोऽभ्यपद्यत ।। ३७.
The youngest of Ashija, who was the priest of the gods, was Brihaspati of great brilliance; he approached Mamata.
उवाच ममता तन्तु बृहस्पतिमनिच्छती। अन्तर्वत्न्यस्मि ते भ्रातुर्ज्येष्ठस्याष्टमिता इति ।। ३७.
Mamata, unwilling, spoke to Brihaspati: I am pregnant with your elder brother’s child, eight months along.
अयं हि मे महागर्भो रोचतेऽति बृहस्पते। अशिजं ब्रह्म चाभ्यस्य षडङ्गं वेदमुद्गिरन् ।। ३७.
This great embryo pleases me greatly, O Brihaspati; Ashija, uttering the six-limbed Veda, is Brahma incarnate.
अमोघरेतास्त्वञ्चापि न मां भजितुमर्हसि। अस्मिन्नेव गते काले यथा वा मन्यसे प्रभो ।। ३७.
Your seed is unfailing, yet you should not unite with me; let it be as you wish, when the time comes.
एवमुक्तस्तया सम्यग् बृहत्तेजा बृहस्पतिः। कामात्मानं महात्मा च नात्मानं सोऽभ्यधारयत् ।। ३७.
Thus addressed by her, Brihaspati of great brilliance, driven by desire, did not restrain himself.
