एतास्तिस्रः स्मृतास्तस्य दिव्याः सम्भूतयः शुभाः। मानुष्याः सप्त यास्तस्य शापजांस्तान्निबोधत ।। ३६.
These three are remembered as his divine, auspicious manifestations; now learn of the seven human births of his, which arose from a curse.
त्रेतायुगे तु दशमे दत्तात्रेयो बभूव ह। नष्टे धर्मे चतुर्थश्च मार्कण्डेयपुरःसरः ।। ३६.
In the tenth Treta age, he became Dattatreya; and when righteousness was lost, he appeared as the fourth, preceded by Markandeya.
पञ्चमः पञ्चदश्यां तु त्रेतायां सम्बभूव ह। मान्धातुश्चक्रवर्त्तित्वे तस्थौ तथ्यपुरःसरः ।। ३६.
In the fifteenth Treta, he was born as the fifth; Mandhata, accompanied by Tathya, held the position of emperor.
एको नविंशे त्रेतायां सर्व्वक्षत्रान्तकोऽभवत्। जामदग्न्यस्तथा षष्ठो विश्वामित्रपुरःसरः ।। ३६.
In the nineteenth Treta, he alone became the destroyer of all kshatriyas; Jamadagni's son, and the sixth, preceded by Vishvamitra.
चतुर्विंशे युगे रामो वसिष्ठेन पुरोधसा। सप्तमो राव णस्यार्थे जज्ञे दशरथात्मजः ।। ३६.
In the twenty-fourth age, Rama, with Vasishtha as his priest, was born as the seventh, the son of Dasharatha, for the sake of Ravana.
अष्टमो द्वापरे विष्णुरष्टाविंशे पराशरात् । वेदव्यासस्ततो जज्ञे जातूकर्णपुरःसरः ।। ३६.
In the eighth Dvapara, Vishnu, in the twenty-eighth, was born from Parashara; then Vedavyasa appeared, preceded by Jatukarṇa.
तथैव नवमो विष्णुरदित्याः कश्यपात्मजः। देवक्यां वसुदेवात्तु ब्रह्नगार्ग्यपुरःसरः ।। ३६.
Likewise, as the ninth, Vishnu, son of Kashyapa and Aditi, was born from Devaki and Vasudeva, preceded by Brahmagarga.
अप्रमेयो नियोज्यश्च यत्र कामचरो वशी। क्रीजते भगवाँ ल्लोके बालः क्रीजनकैरिव ।। ३६.
Unfathomable and master of himself, he acts as he wishes; the Blessed One plays in the world like a child with playthings.
न प्रमातुं महाबाहुः शक्योऽसौ मधुसूदनः। परं परममेतस्माद्विश्वरूपान्न विद्यते ।। ३६.
The mighty-armed Madhusudana cannot be measured; beyond him, there is nothing higher, nor any form greater than his universal form.
अष्टाविंश तिमे तद्वद्द्वापरस्यांशसङ्क्षये। नष्टे धर्मे तदा जज्ञे विष्णुर्वृष्णिकुले प्रभुः ।। ३६.
In the twenty-eighth Dvapara, at the end of its portion, when righteousness was lost, Vishnu, the Lord, was born in the Vrishni clan.
कर्त्तुं धर्मव्यवस्थानमसुराणां प्रणाशनम्। मोहयन् सर्वभूतानि योगात्मा योगमायया ।। ३६.
To establish righteousness and destroy the demons, deluding all beings, the yogic self, by yogic power, took form.
प्रविष्टो मानुषीं योनिं प्रच्छन्नश्चरते महीम्। विहारार्थं मनुष्येषु सान्दीपनिपुरःसरम् ।। ३६.
He entered a human womb and secretly moved upon the earth, for sport among men, preceded by Sandipani.
यत्र कंसञ्च शाल्वञ्च द्विविदञ्च महासुरम्। अरिष्टं वृषभञ्चैव पूतनां केशिनं हयम् ।। ३६.
There he slew Kamsa, Shalva, Dvivida the great demon, Arishta, Vrishabha, Putana, Keshi the horse, and others.
नागं कुवलयापीडं मल्लराजगृहाधिपम्। दैत्यान् मानुषदेहस्थान् सूदयामास वीर्यवान् ।। ३६.
He killed the serpent Kuvalayapida, the lord of the wrestlers' house, and other demons dwelling in human bodies, displaying his valor.
छिन्नं बाहुसहस्रञ्च बाणस्याद्भुतकर्मणः । नरकश्च हतः सङ्खये यवनश्च महाबलः ।। ३६.
He cut off the thousand arms of Bana, the wondrous actor; Naraka was slain in battle, and Yavana, the mighty one, as well.
हृतानि च महीपानां सर्वरत्नानि तेजसा। दुराचारा श्च निहताः पार्थिवा ये रसातले ।। ३६.
He took all the jewels of the kings by his brilliance; and those wicked rulers who dwelled in the netherworld were destroyed.
एते लोकहितार्थाय प्रादुर्भावा महात्मनः। अस्मिन्नेव युगे क्षीणे सन्ध्या श्लिष्टे भविष्यति ।। ३६.
These manifestations of the great soul arise for the welfare of the worlds; in this very age, when the yuga is diminished and the twilight period has merged, it will occur.
कल्किर्विष्णुयशा नाम पाराशर्यः प्रतापवान्। दशमो भाव्यसम्भूतो याज्ञवल्क्यपुरःसरः ।। ३६.
Kalki, renowned as Vishnuyaśā, of the lineage of Parāśara and possessing great prowess, will be the tenth, destined to appear, preceded by Yājñavalkya.
अनुकर्षन् सर्वसेनां हस्त्यश्वरथसङ्कुलाम्। प्रगृहीतायुधौर्विप्रैर्वृतः शतसहस्रशः ।। ३६.
Drawing forth all armies, crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots, surrounded by Brahmins bearing weapons, numbering in the hundreds of thousands.
नात्यर्थं धार्मिका ये च ये च धर्मद्विषः व्कचित्। ईदीच्यान्मध्यदेशांश्च तथा विन्ध्यापरान्तिकान् ।। ३६.
Those who are not exceedingly righteous, and those who are enemies of dharma, from the northern regions, the central lands, and also from the Vindhya and western territories.
तथैव दाक्षिणात्यांश्च द्रविजान् सिंहलैः सह। गान्धारान् पारदांश्चैव पह्लवान् यवनाञ्छकान् ।। ३६.
Likewise, those from the southern regions, the Dravidians together with the Sinhalas, the Gandharas, the Paradas, the Pahlavas, the Yavanas, and the Shakas.
तुषारान् बर्बरांश्चैव पुलिन्दान् दरदान् खसान् । लम्पाकानन्धकान् रुद्रान् किरातांश्चैव स प्रभुः ।। ३६.
Also the Tusharas, the Barbaras, the Pulindas, the Daradas, the Khasas, the Lampakas, the Andhakas, the Rudras, and the Kiratas—he, the lord, as well.
प्रवृत्तचक्रोबलवान् म्लेच्छानामन्तकृद्बली। अदृश्यः सर्वभूतानां पृथिवीं विचरिष्यति ।। ३६.
With the power of the revolving wheel, mighty in strength, he will be the destroyer of the mlecchas; invisible to all beings, he will roam the earth.
मानवः स तु संजज्ञे देवस्यांशेन धीमतः । पूर्वजन्मनि विष्णुर्यः प्रमितिर्नाम वीर्यवान् ।। ३६.
That man will be born through a portion of the wise deity; in a previous birth, he was Vishnu, known as Pramiti, endowed with valor.
गात्रेण वै चन्द्रसमः पूर्णे कलियुगेऽभवत्। इत्येतास्तस्य देवस्य दश सम्भूतयः स्मृताः ।। ३६.
In form, he will be like the moon; he will appear at the end of the Kali Yuga. Thus, these ten manifestations of that deity are remembered.
तं तं कालञ्च कार्यञ्च तत्तदुद्दिश्य कारणम्। अंशेन त्रिषु लोकेषु तास्ता योनीः प्रपत्स्यते ।। ३६.
For each time, purpose, and reason, he will enter those wombs in the three worlds by a portion of himself.
पञ्चविंशोत्थिते कल्पे पञ्चविंशति वै समाः। विनिघ्नन् सर्व्वभूतानि मानुषानेव सर्व्वशः ।। ३६.
When the twenty-fifth cycle arises, for twenty-five years, he will destroy all beings, especially all humans.
कृत्वा बीजावशेषान्तु महीं क्रूरेण कर्म्मणा। संशातयित्वा वृषलान् प्रायशस्तानधार्म्मिकान् ।। ३६.
Having left only the seeds remaining, through cruel deeds upon the earth, he will annihilate the outcastes, mostly those who are unrighteous.
ततः स वै तदा कल्किश्चरितार्थः ससैनिकः। कर्मणा निहता ये तु सिद्धास्ते तु पुनः स्वयम् ।। ३६.
Then, Kalki, having fulfilled his purpose with his army, those who were slain by his actions will become perfected, and again, of their own accord.
अकस्मात् कुपितान्योन्यं भविष्यन्ति च मोहिताः । क्षपयित्वा तु तान् सर्वान् बाविनार्थेन चोदितान् ।। ३६.
Suddenly, bewildered, they will become angry with one another; after destroying all those who were incited for the purpose of the future.
