Nor am I able to go before you; I have been forbidden by Brahmā, who knows the future, O lord.
And these two disciples of mine are equal to Bṛhaspati; together with the gods, they will restrain you all, though you are enraged.
Thus addressed, the Daityas by Kāvya, whose actions are pure, then went together with those two, led by Prahlāda.
Hearing from Śukra that the outcome was inevitable, the Dānavas, hoping for victory, accepted the words spoken by Kāvya.
All, armed and ready, then challenged the gods; and seeing the gods and asuras assembled for battle—
Then, the gods, having donned their armor, fought with them; in that conflict between gods and asuras, which lasted a hundred years, the asuras defeated the gods, and the defeated gods consulted among themselves.
We do not know the power of Ṣaṇḍa and Amarka among the gods; therefore, for our own welfare, we must perform a sacrifice.
By depriving those two of their knowledge, we shall defeat the asuras; then the gods summoned Ṣaṇḍa and Amarka.
We shall invite the two brahmins to the sacrifice—let them abandon the asuras; or we shall seize them, having conquered the Dānavas.
Thus, Ṣaṇḍa and Amarka abandoned the asuras; then the gods attained victory, and the Dānavas were defeated.
Having defeated the gods and demons, the Six and the Sun approached; and, overcome by the curse of Kāvya, they became unsupported once again.
Then, as they were being slain by the gods, they entered the netherworld; thus, those demons, rendered powerless by Śakra, from that time onward, by the curse and by the agency of Bhṛgu, were so.
Viṣṇu was born again and again, the Lord, whenever the sacrifice declined, to establish righteousness and destroy unrighteousness.
Those demons who did not abide by Prahlāda's command, Brahmā declared them all to be fit for destruction by humans.
From Dharma, Nārāyaṇa was born in the interval of Cākṣuṣa; he set the sacrifice in motion in the interval of Vaivasvata, at the altar.
At the manifestation of another, Brahmā himself was the priest; and in the fourth age, when the demons had arisen.
He was born within the ocean, at the slaying of Hiraṇyakaśipu; the second, Narasiṃha, became Rudra, foremost among the gods.
When Bali was established in the worlds, in the seventh age of the Tretā, as the demons conquered the three worlds, the third, Vāmana, appeared.
Compressing his form into limbs, with Bṛhaspati at the forefront, the delight of the Aditya lineage, having become a Brāhmaṇa at an auspicious time, he approached Bali, the son of Virocana.
You are the king of the three worlds; in you, everything is established. You ought to grant me, O king, three steps of land, thus spoke the Lord.
I will give, said King Bali, son of Virocana, recognizing Vāmana, and thus he himself consented.
That Vāmana, O best of twice-born, with three steps, occupied heaven, space, and earth; the Lord traversed this entire world.
The embodied being surpassed the sun with his own brilliance, illuminating all directions and regions, the illustrious one.
That mighty-armed one shone, illuminating all the worlds; Janārdana, having taken the wealth of the demons and the three worlds, led the demons, along with their sons and grandsons, to the nethermost realm.
Namuci, Śambara, and Prahlāda were struck down by Viṣṇu; the cruel ones were destroyed and dispersed, and they reached the directions.
Mādhava, the soul of beings, showed the sages the great elements, the particular beings, and time in its entirety, as a marvel.
On his body, he perceives the entire universe as himself; there is nothing in the worlds that is not pervaded by the great soul.
That form of Upendra, seen by gods, demons, and men, caused all to be bewildered, overcome by the radiance of Viṣṇu.
Bali, bound with mighty chains, together with his kin and circle of friends, and the entire lineage of Virocana, was confined in the netherworld.
Then, having bestowed all sovereignty of the immortals upon Indra, the great-souled one, Janardana, the mighty-armed, appeared among men.
