अव्यक्तायाथ महते भूतायैवोन्द्रियाय च । तन्मात्राय महान्ताय तुभ्यं तत्त्वात्मने नमः ।। ३५.
Homage to you, who are the soul of the principles: the unmanifest, the great, the elements, the senses, the subtle elements, and the great one.
नित्याय चार्थलिङ्गाय सूक्ष्माय चेतनाय च। शुद्धाय विभवे चैव तुभ्यं नित्यात्मने नमः ।। ३५.
Homage to you, who are the eternal soul: eternal, marked by meaning, subtle, conscious, pure, and powerful.
नमस्ते त्रिषु लोकेषु स्वरान्तेषु भवादिषु। सत्यान्तेषु महान्तेषु चतुर्षु च नमोऽस्तु ते ।। ३५.
Salutations to you in the three worlds, at the ends of heaven, in the states from becoming onward, at the ends of truth, in the great ones, and in the four (realms).
नमःस्तोत्रे मया ह्यस्मिन् सदसद्व्याहृतं विभो। मद्भक्त इति ब्रह्मण्य सर्वन्तत् क्षन्तुमर्हसि ।। ३५.
O Lord, in this hymn of praise by me, whatever has been spoken rightly or wrongly, as your devotee and as one devoted to Brahman, you should forgive all that.
सूत उवाच।। एवमाराध्य देवेशमीशानं नीललोहितम्। ब्रह्मेति प्रणतस्तस्मै प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।। ३६.
Sūta said: Thus, having worshipped the Lord of gods, Īśāna, the blue-red one, and bowing to him as Brahman, with joined palms he spoke these words.
काव्यस्य गात्रं संस्पृश्य हस्तेन प्रीतिमान् भवः। निकामं दर्शनं दत्त्वा तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ।। ३६.
Bhava, pleased, touched the body of Kāvyā with his hand, granted her the vision as she desired, and then vanished right there.
ततः सोऽन्तर्हिते तस्मिन् देवेशानुचरे तदा। तिष्ठन्तीं प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा जयन्तीमिदमब्रवीत् ।। ३६.
Then, when that Lord of gods had disappeared, his attendant Jayantī, standing with joined palms, spoke these words.
कस्य त्वं सुभगे का वा दुःखिते मयि दुःखिता। महता तपसा युक्तं किमर्थं माञ्जुगोपसि ।। ३६.
Who are you, O fortunate one? Whose are you? Why are you sorrowful when I am in distress? Endowed with great austerity, for what purpose do you protect me?
अनया सततं भक्त्या प्रश्रयेण दमेन च। स्नेहेन चैव सुश्रोणि प्रीतोऽस्मि वरवर्णिनि ।। ३६.
By this constant devotion, humility, self-restraint, and affection, O beautiful-hipped, lovely-complexioned one, I am pleased with you.
किमिच्छसि वरारेहे कस्ते कामः समृध्यताम्। तं ते संपूरयाम्यद्य यद्यपि स्यात् सुदुर्लभम् ।। ३६.
What do you desire, O best of women? What is your wish? Let it be fulfilled. Today I will grant it to you, even if it is very difficult to obtain.
एवमुक्ताऽऽब्रवीदनं तपसा ज्ञातुमर्हसि। चिकीर्षितं मे ब्रह्निष्ठत्वं हि वेत्थ यथातथम् ।। ३६.
Thus addressed, she replied: You should know by your austerity what I intend, for you, established in Brahman, truly know my purpose.
एवमुक्तेऽब्रवीदेनां दृष्ट्वा दिव्येन चक्षुषा। माहेन्द्री त्वं वरारोहे मद्धितार्थमिहागता ।। ३६.
When she had spoken thus, seeing her with divine sight, he said: O best of women, you are the wife of Indra, come here for my benefit.
मया सह त्वं सुश्रोणि दश वर्षाणि भामिनि। अदृश्यं सर्वभूतैस्तु संप्रयोगमिहेच्छसि ।। ३६.
O beautiful-hipped, radiant one, you wish to be united with me here, unseen by all beings, for ten years.
देवेन्द्रानलवर्णाभे वरारोहे सुलोचने। इमं वृणीष्व कामं ते मत्तो वै वल्गुभाषिणि ।। ३६.
O best of women, fair-eyed, resembling the color of Indra's fire, choose this boon from me, O sweet-spoken one.
एवं भवतु गच्छामो गृहान् वै मत्तकाशिनि । ततः स्वगृहमागम्य जयन्त्या सहितः प्रभुः ।। ३६.
"So be it. Let us go to the house, O intoxicated-eyed one." Then, coming to his own house, the Lord was together with Jayantī.
स तया सं व सद्देव्या दश वर्षाणि भागशः। अदृश्यः सर्वभूतानां मायया संवृतस्तदा ।। ३६.
With her, the divine lady, he remained for ten years, unseen by all beings, enveloped by his own illusion.
कृतार्थमागतं दृष्ट्वा काव्यं सर्वे दितेः सुताः । अभिजग्मुर्गृहं तस्य मुदितास्ते दिदृक्षवः ।। ३६.
Seeing Kāvya arrive, having fulfilled his purpose, all the sons of Diti joyfully approached his house, eager to see him.
गता यदा न पश्यन्तो जयन्त्या संवृतं गुरुम्। दाक्षिण्यं तस्य तद्बुध्वा प्रतिजग्मुर्यथागतम् ।। ३६.
When they had gone and could not see their teacher, concealed by Jayantī, realizing his kindness, they returned as they had come.
बृहस्पतिस्तु संरुद्धं ज्ञात्वा काव्यं चकार ह। पित्रर्थे दश वर्षाणि जयन्त्या हितकाम्यया ।। ३६.
Bṛhaspati, knowing that Kāvya was obstructed, acted for the sake of his father, for ten years, desiring Jayantī's welfare.
बुद्ध्वा तदन्तरं सोऽथ दैत्यानामिव चोदितः। काव्यस्य रूपमास्थाय सोऽसुरान्समभाषत ।। ३६.
Understanding the interval, then, prompted as if by the Daityas, he assumed the form of Kāvya and addressed the Asuras.
ततः समागतान् दृष्ट्वा बृहस्पतिरुवाच तान्। स्वागतं मम याज्यानां संप्राप्तोऽस्मि हिताय च ।। ३६.
Then, seeing them assembled, Bṛhaspati spoke to them: 'Welcome, my sacrificers! I have come for your benefit.'
अहं वोऽध्यापयिष्यामि प्राप्ता विद्या मया हि सा। ततस्ते हृष्टमनसो विद्यार्थमुपपेदिरे ।। ३६.
'I will teach you; the knowledge has indeed been attained by me.' Then, with delighted minds, they approached for learning.
पूर्णकामस्तदा तस्मिन् समये दशवार्षिके। ययौ च समकालं स सद्योत्पन्नमतिस्तदा ।। ३६.
At that time, his desires fulfilled, during the ten-year period, he departed at the same moment, his intellect newly arisen.
समयान्ते देवयानी सद्यो जाता सुता तदा। बुद्धिं चक्रे ततश्चापि याज्यानां प्रत्यवेक्षणे ।। ३६.
At the end of the period, Devayānī, his daughter, was just born; then she resolved to observe the sacrificers.
देवि गच्छामहे द्रष्टुं तव याज्यान् शुचिस्मिते। विभ्रान्तप्रेक्षिते साध्वि त्रिवर्णायतलोचने ।। ३६.
'O goddess, let us go to see your sacrificers, O pure-smiling one, O virtuous lady with wandering gaze and three-colored, wide eyes.'
एवमुक्ताऽब्रवीद्देवी भज भक्तान् महाव्रत। एष ब्रह्मन् सतां धर्मो न धर्मं लोपयामि ते ।। ३६.
Thus addressed, the goddess said: 'Serve the devotees, O great vow-holder; this, O Brahman, is the dharma of the good. I will not violate your dharma.'
ततो गत्वासुरान् दृष्ट्वा देवाचार्येण धीमता। वाञ्चितान् काव्यरूपेण वेधसाऽसुरमब्रवीत् ।। ३६.
Then, having gone and seen the Asuras, by the wise teacher of the gods, deceived by the form of Kāvya, the creator spoke to the Asura.
काव्यं मां तात जानीध्वं एष ह्याङ्गिरसो भुवि। वञ्चिता बत यूयं वै मयि शक्ते तु दानवाः ।। ३६.
'Know me as Kāvya, O child; this is indeed Aṅgiras on earth. Alas, you Dānavas have been deceived by me, who possess power.'
श्रुत्वा तथा ब्रुवाणन्तं सम्भ्रान्ता दितिजास्ततः। प्रेक्षन्ते स्म ह्युभौ तत्र सितासितशुचिस्मितौ ।। ३६.
Hearing him speak thus, the sons of Diti became confused; there, they looked at both, the fair and the dark, with pure smiles.
सम्प्रमूढाः स्थिताः सर्वे प्रापद्यन्त न किञ्चन। ततस्तेषु प्रमूढेषु काव्यस्तान् पुनरब्रवीत् ।। ३६.
All stood bewildered, unable to grasp anything; while they were thus confused, Kāvya spoke to them again.
