स शुक्रश्चोशना ख्यातः स्मृतः काव्योऽपि नामतः। पितॄणां मानसी कन्या सोमपानां यशस्विनी। शुक्रस्य भार्याङ्गी नाम विजज्ञे चतुरः सुतान् ।। ४.
That Shukra is also called Ushanas, and by name Kavi as well; the illustrious mind-born daughter of the Pitrs, drinkers of soma, named Angi, became Shukra's wife and bore him four sons.
ब्राह्मेण तेजसा युक्तः स चातो ब्रह्मवित्तमः। तस्यामेव तु चत्वारः पुत्राः शुक्रस्य जज्ञिरे ।। ४.
Endowed with Brahma's radiance, he thus became foremost among knowers of Brahman; and from that same Angi, four sons were born to Shukra.
त्वष्टा वरूत्री द्वावेतौ शण्डामर्कौ च तावुभौ। ते तदादित्यसङ्काशा ब्रह्म कल्पाः प्रभावतः ।। ४.
Tvashtri and Varutri—these two, and also Shanda and Marka, these two as well; they, shining like the sun, were like Brahma in power.
रञ्जनः पृथुरश्मिश्च विद्वान्यश्च बृहद्गिराः। वरूत्रिणः सुता ह्येते ब्रह्मिष्ठाः सुरयाजकाः ।। ४.
Ranjana, Prithu, Ashmi, and the wise Brihadgira—these are the sons of Varutri, devoted to Brahman and worshippers of the gods.
इज्याधर्मविनाशार्थं मनुमेत्याभ्ययोजयन्। निरस्यमानं वै धर्मं दृष्ट्वेन्द्रो मनुमब्रवीत् ।। ४.
For the destruction of unrighteous sacrifice, they approached Manu and engaged him; seeing dharma being cast aside, Indra spoke to Manu.
एतैरेव तु कामं त्वां प्रापयिष्यामि याजनम्। श्रुत्वेन्द्रस्य तु तद्वाक्यं तस्माद् देशादपाक्रमन् ।। ४.
'With these very ones, I will indeed cause you to perform the sacrifice,' said Indra; hearing these words of Indra, they departed from that place.
तिरोभूतेषु तेष्विन्द्रो धर्मपत्नीञ्च चेतनाम्। ग्रहेण मोचयित्वा तु ततः सोऽनुससार ताम् ।। ४.
When they had vanished, Indra freed the wives and the mind of Dharma from captivity, and then pursued her.
तत इन्द्रविनाशाय यतमानान् यतींस्तु तान् । तत्रागतान् पुनर्दृष्ट्वा दुष्टानिन्द्रः प्रहन्यतु। सुष्वाप देवदेवस्य वेद्यां वै दक्षिणे ततः ।। ४.
Then, those ascetics striving for Indra's destruction, when they arrived there and were seen again, Indra struck down the wicked; then he slept on the southern side of the altar of the god of gods.
तेषान्तु भक्ष्यमाणानां तत्र शालावृकैः सह। शीर्षाणि न्यपतंस्तानि खर्जूराण्यभवंस्ततः ।। ४.
As they were being devoured there by the sala-wolves, their heads fell, and from them date-palms arose.
एवं वरूत्रिणः पुत्रा इन्द्रेण निहताः पुरा। यजन्यां देवयानी च शुक्रस्य दुहिताऽभवत् ।। ४.
Thus, the sons of Varutri were formerly slain by Indra in the sacrifice, and Devayani became the daughter of Shukra.
त्रिशिरा विश्वरूपस्तु त्वष्टुः पुत्रोऽभवन्महान्। विश्वरूपानुजश्चापि विश्वकर्मा यमः स्मृतः ।। ४.
Triśiras, of manifold forms, was the great son of Tvaṣṭṛ; and Viśvakarman, also called Yama, is known as the younger brother of Viśvarūpa.
भृगोस्तु भृगवो देवा जज्ञिरे द्वादशात्मजाः। देव्यां तान्सुषुवे सर्वान्काव्यश्चैवात्मजान्प्रभुः ।। ४.
From Bhṛgu were born the Bhṛgus, the divine sages, twelve sons in all; the goddess bore them all, and Kāvyas were also the sons of the lord.
भुवनो भावनश्चैव अन्यश्चान्यायतस्तथा। क्रतुःश्रवाश्च मूर्द्धा च व्यजयो व्यश्रुषश्च यः। प्रसव श्चाप्यजश्चैव द्वादशोऽधिपतिः स्मृतः ।। ४.
Bhuvana, Bhāvana, and others likewise, Kratu, Śravā, and Mūrdhā, Vyaśaya, Vyaśruṣa, Prasava, and also Aja—these twelve are remembered as lords.
इत्येते भृगवो देवाः स्मृता द्वादश याज्ञिकाः । पौलोम्यजनयत्पुत्रं ब्रह्मिष्ठं वशिनं विभुम् ।। ४.
Thus these twelve Bhṛgus are known as sacrificial deities; Paulomī gave birth to a son, most learned, self-controlled, and mighty.
व्याधितः सोऽष्टमे मासि गर्भक्रूरेण कर्मणा। च्यवनाच्च्यवनासोऽथ चेतनस्तु प्रचेतसः। प्राचेतसाच्च्यवनक्रोधादध्वानं पुरुषादजः ।। ४.
Afflicted in the eighth month by a cruel act while in the womb, Cyavana was thus born; Cyavana, conscious, was the son of Pracetasa, and from Prācetasa, out of Cyavana’s wrath, was born Adhvāna, the unaging man.
जनयामास पुत्रौ द्वौ सुकन्यायाञ्च भार्गवः। आत्मवानं दधीचञ्च तावुभौ साधुसंमतौ ।। ४.
Bhārgava begot two sons with Sukanyā: Ātmavān and Dadhīca, both esteemed as virtuous.
सारस्वतः सरस्वत्यां दधीचाच्चोपपद्यते। रुची पत्नी महाभागा आत्मवानस्य नाहुषी ।। ४.
Sārasvata was born from Dadhīca and Sarasvatī; Rucī, the noble lady of the Nāhuṣa line, was the wife of Ātmavān.
तस्य ऊर्वोऋषिर्जज्ञे ऊरू भित्त्वा महायशाः । और्वश्चासीदृचीकस्तु दीप्ताग्निसदृशप्रभः ।। ४.
From him was born the sage Ūrva, of great fame, who emerged by splitting the thigh; Aurva was radiant, resembling blazing fire.
जमदग्निऋचीकस्य सत्यवत्यां व्यजायत। भृगोश्च रुचिपर्याये रौद्रवैष्णवयोस्तथा ।। ४.
Jamadagni was born to Ṛcīka and Satyavatī; and in the lineage of Bhṛgu, from Ruci, came those of the Rudra and Viṣṇu lines.
जमनाद्वैष्णवस्याग्नेर्जमदग्निरजायत। रेणुका जमदग्नेस्तु शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमम्। ब्रह्मक्षत्रमयं रामं सुषुवेऽमिततेजसम् ।। ४.
From the Viṣṇu line of Agni was born Jamadagni; Reṇukā, wife of Jamadagni, gave birth to Rāma, equal in prowess to Indra, composed of Brahmin and Kṣatriya qualities, and of immeasurable brilliance.
और्वस्यासीत्पुत्रशतं जमदग्निपुरागेमम् । तेषां पुत्रसहस्राणि भार्गवाणां परस्परात् ।। ४.
From Aurva descended a hundred sons, and from Jamadagni’s line; among them, thousands of Bhārgava sons were born, one after another.
ऋष्यन्तरेषु वै बाह्या बहवो भार्गवाः स्मृताः । वत्सो विश्वोऽश्विषेणश्च पाण्डः पथ्यः सशौनकः। गोत्रेण सप्तमा ह्येते पक्षा ज्ञेयास्तु भार्गवाः ।। ४.
Among other sages, many Bhārgavas are known as external branches: Vatsa, Viśva, Aśviṣeṇa, Pāṇḍa, Pathya, and Śaunaka; these seven are to be known as the Bhārgava branches by lineage.
श्रृणुताङ्गिरसो वंशमग्नेः पुत्रस्य धीमतः। यस्यान्ववाये सम्भूता भारद्वाजाः सगौतमाः। देवाश्चाङ्गिरसो मुख्यास्त्विषुमन्तो महौजसः ।। ४.
Hear now the lineage of the Āṅgirasas, descendants of Agni, the wise one, from whose line arose the Bhāradvājas with the Gautamas, and the chief Āṅgirasas, the radiant, mighty deities.
सुरूपा चैव मारीची कार्द्दमी च तथा स्वराट्। पथ्या च मानवी कन्या तिस्रो भार्यास्त्वथर्वणः। इत्येताङ्गिरसः पत्न्यस्तासु वक्ष्यामि सन्ततिम् ।। ४.
Surūpā, a daughter of Marīci; Kārddamī, and Svarāṭ; and Pathyā, a daughter of Manu—these three were the wives of Atharvan; these are the wives of the Āṅgirasas, and I will now recount their progeny.
अथर्वणस्तु दायादास्तासु जाताः कुलोद्वहाः। उत्पन्ना महता चैव तपसा भावितात्मनाम् ।। ४.
From these, Atharvan’s heirs were born, upholding the family line, produced through great austerity by those of purified souls.
बृहस्पतिः सुरूपायां गौतमः सुषुवे स्वराट्। अवन्ध्यं वामदेवञ्च उतथ्यमुशिजन्तथा ।। ४.
Bṛhaspati was born from Surūpā, and Gautama from Svarāṭ; Vāmadeva, Utaṭhya, and Uśija, all illustrious, were also born.
धिष्णुः पुत्रस्तु पथ्यायां संवर्तश्चैव मानसः। विचित्तश्च तथायस्यः शरद्वांश्चाप्युतथ्यजः ।। ४.
Dhiṣṇu was the son of Pathyā, and Saṃvarta was born from Mānasa; Vicitta and Āyasya likewise, and Śaradvān, son of Utathya.
अशिजो दीर्घतमा बृहदुत्थो वामदेवजः। धिष्णुः पुत्राः सुधन्वान ऋषभश्च सुधन्वनः।।४.१०२ रथकाराः स्मृता देवा ऋषयो ये परिश्रुताः। बृहस्पतेर्भरद्वाजो विश्रुतः सुमहायशाः ।। ४.
Aśija, Dīrghatamā, and Bṛhaduttha, son of Vāmadeva; Dhiṣṇu’s sons were Sudhanvan and Ṛṣabha, sons of Sudhanvan; the Rathakāras are known as divine sages, renowned ṛṣis; Bharadvāja, son of Bṛhaspati, is famed and of great renown.
अङ्गिरसस्तु संवर्त्तो देवानङ्गिरसः श्रृणु। बृहस्पतेर्यवीयांसो देवा ह्यङ्गिरसः स्मृताः ।। ४.
Now hear of Saṃvarta, the Angiras, and the Angirases among the gods; the younger brothers of Bṛhaspati are known as the Angirases among the gods.
औरसाङ्गिरसः पुत्राः सुरूपायां विजज्ञिरे। औदार्यायुर्दनुर्दक्षो दर्भः प्राणस्तथैव च। हविष्मांश्च हविष्णुश्च क्रतुः सत्यश्च ते दश ।। ४.
The sons of Angiras, born from Surūpā, are called the Aurasa Angirases: Audārya, Āyu, Dhanur, Dakṣa, Darbha, Prāṇa, Haviṣmān, Haviṣṇu, Kratu, and Satya—these ten.
