Vayu Purana

देवी क्रुद्धाब्रवीदेनाननिन्द्रत्वं करोम्यहम्। संस्तभ्य शीघ्रं संरम्भादिन्द्रं साऽभ्यचरत्ततः ।। ३५.

The goddess, enraged, spoke: 'I shall make you powerless, Indra!' Quickly, with wrath, she confronted Indra.

ततः संस्तम्भितं दृष्ट्वा शक्रंदेवास्तु यूपवत्। व्यद्रवन्त ततो भीता दृष्ट्वा शक्रं वशीकृतम् ।। ३५.

Then, seeing Indra immobilized like a sacrificial post, the gods fled in fear, having seen Indra subdued.

गतेषु सुरसङ्घेषु विष्णुरिन्द्रमभाषत। मांत्वं प्रविश भद्रन्ते नेष्यामि त्वां सुरेश्वर ।। ३५.

When the host of gods had departed, Viṣṇu spoke to Indra: 'Enter into me, O blessed one; I shall protect you, Lord of the gods.'

एवमुक्तस्ततो विष्णुं प्रविवेश पुरन्दरः। विष्णुना रक्षितं दृष्ट्वा देवी क्रुद्धा वचोऽवदत् ।। ३५.

Thus addressed, Purandara entered Viṣṇu; seeing Indra protected by Viṣṇu, the goddess, enraged, spoke these words.

एषा त्वां विष्णुना सार्द्धं दहामि मघवानिव। मिषतां सर्वभूतानां दृश्यतां मे तपोबलम् ।। ३५.

'Together with Viṣṇu, I shall burn you, O Maghavan, in the sight of all beings; let my power of austerity be witnessed.'

तयाभिभूतौ तौ देवाविन्द्रविष्णू जजल्पतुः। कथं मुच्येव सहितौ विष्णुरिन्द्रमभाषत ।। ३५.

Overpowered by her, the two gods, Indra and Viṣṇu, conferred together; Viṣṇu spoke to Indra: 'How shall we escape together?'

इन्द्रोऽब्रवीज्जहि ह्येनां यावन्नौ न दहेद्विभो। विशेषेणाभिभूतोऽहमतस्त्वञ्च हि मा चिरम् ।। ३५.

Indra said: 'Slay her before she burns us, O mighty one; I am especially overpowered, so do not delay.'

ततः समीक्ष्य तां विष्णुः स्त्रीवधं कर्त्तुमास्थितः। अभिध्याय ततश्चक्रमापन्नः सत्वरं प्रभुः ।। ३५.

Then, observing her, Viṣṇu resolved to commit the killing of a woman; having contemplated, the Lord swiftly summoned his discus.

तस्याः सत्वरमाणायाः शीघ्रकारी सुरारिहा। स्त्रिया विष्णुस्ततो देव्या क्रूरं बुद्ध्वा चिकीर्षितम्। क्रुद्धस्तदस्त्रमाविद्ध्य शिरश्चिच्छेद माधवः ।। ३५.

As she rushed swiftly, the slayer of enemies of the gods, perceiving the cruel intent of the goddess, Viṣṇu, angered, invoked his weapon and severed her head.

तं दृष्ट्वा स्त्रीवधं घोरं चुकोप भृगुरीश्वरः। ततोऽभिशस्तो भृगुणा विष्णुर्भार्यावधे तदा ।। ३५.

Seeing that dreadful act of killing a woman, Bhṛgu, the lord, became enraged; then Viṣṇu was cursed by Bhṛgu for the slaying of his wife.

यस्मात्ते जानता धर्मानवध्या स्त्री निषूदिता। तस्मात्त्वं सप्तकृत्वो वै मानुषेषु प्रपत्स्यसि ।। ३५.

Because, knowing the law, you killed a woman who is not to be slain, therefore you shall descend among humans seven times.

ततस्तेनाभिशापेन नष्टे धर्मे पुनः पुनः। लोके सर्वहितार्थाय जायते मानुषेष्विह ।। ३५.

Thus, by that curse, when righteousness is lost again and again, for the welfare of all, he is born among humans in this world.

अनुव्याहृत्य विष्णुं स तदादाय शिरः स्वयम्। समानीय ततः काये अपो गृह्येदमब्रवीत् ।। ३५.

Having thus addressed Viṣṇu, he himself took the head, brought it to the body, took water, and spoke these words.

एष त्वां विष्णुना सत्ये हतां संजीवयाम्यहम् । यदि कृत्स्नो मया धर्मश्चरितो ज्ञायतेऽपि वा। तेन सत्येन जीवस्व यदि सत्यं ब्रवीम्यहम् ।। ३५.

Now I shall restore you, who were slain by Viṣṇu in truth, to life—if all the righteousness I have practiced is known, or even if it is not; by that truth, live, if indeed I speak the truth.

सत्याभिव्याहृता तस्या देवी संजीविता तदा। तदा तां प्रोक्ष्य शीताभिरद्भिर्जीवेति सोऽब्रवीत् ।। ३५.

When this truthful declaration was uttered, the goddess was revived; then, sprinkling her with cool waters, he said, 'Live.'

ततस्तां सर्वभूतानि दृष्ट्वा सुप्तोत्थितामिव। साधु साध्वित्यदृश्यानां वाचस्ताः सस्वरुर्दिशः ।। ३५.

Then, seeing her as if awakened from sleep, all beings rejoiced, and voices of the unseen resounded through the directions, exclaiming, 'Excellent! Excellent!'

दृष्ट्वा सञ्जीवितामेवं देवीं तां भृगुणा तदा। मिषतां सर्वभूतानां तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ।। ३५.

Thus, when Bhṛgu revived the goddess before the eyes of all beings, it appeared as a marvel among them.

असंभ्रान्तेन भृगुणा पत्नीं सञ्जीवितां ततः। दृष्ट्वा शक्रो न लेभेऽथ शर्म काव्यभयात्ततः ।। ३५.

When Bhṛgu, unperturbed, brought his wife back to life, Śakra, seeing this, found no peace, being fearful of Kāvyas.

प्रजागरे ततश्चेन्द्रो जयन्तीमात्मनः सुताम्। प्रोवाच मतिमान् वाक्यं स्वां कन्यां पाकशासनः ।। ३५.

Then, remaining awake, Indra, the wise wielder of the thunderbolt, spoke to his own daughter Jayantī, uttering these words.

एष काव्यो ह्यनिन्द्राय चरते दारुणं तपः। तेनाहं व्याकुलः पुत्रि कृतो धृतिमता दृढम् ।। ३५.

'This Kāvyas performs fierce austerity, not for my sake; because of this, O daughter, I have been deeply troubled by his steadfast resolve.'

गच्छ सम्भावयस्वैनं श्रमापनयनैः शुभैः। तैस्तैर्मनोनुकूलैश्च ह्युपचारैरतन्द्रिता ।। ३५.

'Go, honor him with pleasant services that relieve his fatigue, and with various attentions that delight his mind, without any negligence.'

देवी सा हीन्द्रतुहिता जयन्ती शुभचारिणी। युक्तध्यानञ्च शाम्यं तं दुर्बलं धृतिमास्थितम् ।। ३५.

That goddess Jayantī, daughter of Indra, of virtuous conduct, approached him, who was weakened but steadfast, with focused meditation and calmness.

पित्रा यथोक्तं काव्यं सा काव्ये कृतवती तदा। गीर्भिश्चैवानुकूलाभिः स्तुवती वल्गुभाषिणी ।। ३५.

She did for Kāvyas exactly as her father had instructed, praising him with gentle and pleasing words.

गात्रसंवाहनैः काले सेवमाना सुखावहैः । शुश्रूषन्त्यनुकूला च उवास बहुलाः समाः ।। ३५.

Serving him at the proper times with soothing massages, bringing him comfort, she waited on him attentively for many years.

पूर्णे धूमव्रते चापि घोरे वर्षसहस्रिके । वरेण च्छन्दयामास काव्यं प्रीतोऽभवत्तदा ।। ३५.

When the dreadful thousand-year vow of smoke was completed, she asked Kāvyas to choose a boon, and he was pleased.

एवं ब्रुवंस्त्वयैकेन चीर्णं नान्येन केनचित्। तस्मात्त्वं तपसा बुद्ध्या श्रुतेन च बलेन च ।। ३५.

'Thus, what you have accomplished has not been done by anyone else; therefore, by your austerity, wisdom, learning, and strength—'

तेजसा चापि विबुधान् सर्वानभिभविष्यसि। यच्च किञ्चिन्मम ब्रह्मन् विद्यते भृगुनन्दन ।। ३५.

'By your brilliance, you will surpass all the gods; and whatever knowledge I possess, O Bhṛgu's son—'

साङ्गञ्च सरहस्यञ्च यज्ञोपनिषदान्तथा। प्रतिभास्यति ते सर्वं तच्चाद्यन्तं न कस्यचित् ।। ३५.

'All the limbs and all the secrets of the sacrificial Upaniṣads will become manifest to you; their beginning and end are known to none.'

सर्वाभिभावी तेन त्वं द्विजश्रेष्ठो भविष्यसि। एवं दत्त्वा वरांस्तस्मै भार्गवाय पुनः पुनः ।। ३५.

'Therefore, you will become the foremost of twice-born; thus, granting these boons again and again to Bhārgava—'
