For as long as Bali held the right to rule, Prahlada maintained control, and during that time the Asuras possessed the kingdom.
Those three renowned Indras of the Asuras, of great might, ruled over all the Daityas; for ten yugas, indeed, everything was under their dominion.
Then, for ten yugas, the entire realm was without rival; but afterwards, the undiminishing three worlds were protected by mighty Indra.
After that, by the turn of time, the three worlds passed from Prahlada; and when the appointed time arrived, Pakaśāsana (Indra) ruled the three worlds.
Then, abandoning the Asuras, the gods approached the sacrifice; and when the gods had gone to the sacrifice, the Asuras spoke to Kāvya.
"Our kingdom has been taken from us before our very eyes; having abandoned the sacrifice, they have returned again. Today we are unable to stand—let us enter the netherworld."
Thus addressed, Kāvya, distressed, consoled them with words: "Do not fear, Asuras; I will sustain you with my own power."
"The rain, the plants, the waters, and the wealth—all that exists in me; their share among the gods is only through my feet. For your sake, I will grant all this; I will sustain it all."
Then, seeing the Asuras supported by the wise Kāvya, the gods, anxious and eager for victory, conferred together.
"This Kāvya is forcibly turning everything away from us. Come, let us go quickly; when their food is exhausted, revive them. Having slain the remaining ones by force, let us send them to the underworld."
Then the gods, greatly enraged, attacked the Dānavas; as they were being struck down, those Dānavas fled to Kāvya.
Then Kāvya, seeing them swiftly pursued by the gods, wounded and distressed in battle, rescued those sons of Diti from the gods.
Kāvya, seeing the gods standing there, reflected; then, recalling past events, he addressed them after meditating.
"The entire three worlds were conquered by Vāmana in three strides; Bali was bound, Jambha was slain, and Virocana was killed."
"In twelve great battles, the foremost among the Asuras were slain by the gods, mostly through various strategies."
"You, who remain, are but a few, having survived the last battles. I will devise a strategy for you; wait for some time."
"I will go to Mahādeva for the sake of mantras, so that you may be victorious; Agni, the Hotṛ, will be invigorated by mantras from Bṛhaspati."
"Then I will go to the god Nīlalohita for the sake of mantras; after returning here, I will again show you favor."
You all should practice austerities, withdrawn in the forest, clad in bark garments; the gods will not attack you until my return.
Then, having obtained unfailing mantras from the great lord Maheshvara, we shall again fight the gods; after that, you will surely attain victory.
Then, having agreed, the Asuras spoke to the gods: 'We have laid down our arguments; you all may proceed to rule the worlds.'
We shall undertake austerities, withdrawn in the forest, clad in bark garments, having heard Prahlada's words, which are indeed truthful.
Then the gods withdrew, free from distress and joyful; with the Daityas having laid down their weapons, they returned to their own places as before.
Then Kavya spoke to them: 'Let some time be spent in worship, with those intent on austerity and without desire, fulfilling the purpose of the task; all the gods, along with Indra, are dwelling in my father's hermitage.'
Then Kavya, having instructed the Asuras, approached Mahadeva, and after bowing, addressed the lord, the origin of the universe, with pleasing words.
O god, I desire mantras which are not possessed by Brihaspati; for the defeat of the gods and to bring fearlessness to the Asuras.
Thus addressed, the god spoke: 'You desire mantras, O twice-born; undertake the vow I prescribe, as a devoted celibate.'
If you worship for a full thousand years, with your head lowered to the smoke of the altar, then, O blessed one, you will obtain the mantra from me.
Thus addressed by the god, Shukra, of great austerity, touched the feet of the deity and replied, 'So be it.'
I shall undertake the remaining vow as prescribed by you, O lord; then, appointed by the god, he became the keeper of the altar and maker of smoke.
