विरोचनस्तु प्राह्लादिर्नित्यमिन्द्रवधोद्यतः। इन्द्रेणैव स विक्रम्य निहतस्तारकामये ।। ३५.
Virochana, son of Prahlada, always intent on killing Indra, was himself slain by Indra in the Taraka war.
भवादवध्यतां प्राप्य विशेषास्त्रादिभिस्तु यः। सञ्जभो निहतः षष्ठे शक्राविष्टेन विष्णुना ।। ३५.
Having attained invulnerability from you, and equipped with special weapons and the like, Sanjaba was slain in the sixth battle by Vishnu, who had entered Shakra.
अशक्नुवन्तो देवेषु पुरं गोप्तुं त्रिदैवतम् । निहता दानवाः सर्वे त्रिपुरस्त्र्यम्बकेण तु ।। ३५.
Unable to protect the triple city among the gods, all the Danavas were slain by Tryambaka in the destruction of Tripura.
अष्टमे त्वसुराश्चैवं राक्षसाश्चान्धकारकाः। जितदेवमनुष्यैस्तु पितृभिश्चैव सङ्गतान् ।। ३५.
In the eighth battle, thus, the Asuras and the Rakshasas, bringers of darkness, gathered with the Pitris who had conquered gods and men.
संवृतान् दानवांश्चैव सङ्गतान् कृत्स्नशश्च तान् । तथा विष्णुसहायेन महेन्द्रेण निबर्हिताः ।। ३५.
The assembled Danavas, gathered together in their entirety, were destroyed by Mahendra with the aid of Vishnu.
हतो ध्वजो महेन्द्रेण मायाच्छन्नश्च योधयन्। ध्वजे लक्ष्यं समाविश्य विप्रवर्त्तिर्महाभुजः ।। ३५.
Dhvaja was slain by Mahendra, fighting while concealed by illusion; the mighty-armed Vipravartin, entering the mark on the banner, was overthrown.
दैत्यांश्च दानवांश्चैव संहतान् कृत्स्नशश्च तान्। रजिः कोलाहले सर्वान् देवैः परिवृतोऽजयत्। यज्ञामृतेन विजितौ षण्डामार्कौ तु दैवतैः ।। ३५.
Raji, surrounded by the gods, conquered all the Daityas and Danavas assembled in the Kolahala; Shandamarka was conquered by the gods with the nectar of sacrifice.
एते दैवासुरा वृत्ताः संग्रामा द्वादशैव तु। देवासुरक्षयकराः प्रजानामशिवाय च ।। ३५.
These are the twelve Daiva-Asura battles that have occurred, bringing destruction to gods and demons, and misfortune to living beings.
हिरण्यकशिपू राजा वर्षाणामर्बुदं बभौ। तथा शतसहस्राणि ह्यदिकानि द्विसप्ततिः । अशीतिं च सहस्राणि त्रैलोक्यस्येश्वरोऽभवत् ।। ३५.
King Hiranyakashipu ruled for a hundred million years; and then for seventy-two hundred thousand more, and for eighty thousand he was lord of the three worlds.
पर्याये तस्य राजाऽनु बलिर्वर्षार्बुदं पुनः । षष्टिं चैव सहस्राणि त्रिंशतं नियुतानि च ।। ३५.
After him, in succession, Bali became king for another hundred million years, and for sixty thousand and thirty hundred thousand more.
बले राज्याधिकारस्तु यावत्कालं बभूव ह। प्रह्लादेन गृहीतोऽभूत्तावत्कालं तदासुरैः ।। ३५.
For as long as Bali held the right to rule, Prahlada maintained control, and during that time the Asuras possessed the kingdom.
इन्द्रास्त्रयस्ते विख्याता असुराणां महौजसः । दैत्यसंस्थमिदं सर्वमासीद्दशयुगं किल ।। ३५.
Those three renowned Indras of the Asuras, of great might, ruled over all the Daityas; for ten yugas, indeed, everything was under their dominion.
असपत्नं ततः सर्वं राष्ट्रं दशयुगं पुरा। त्रैलोक्यमव्ययमिदं महेन्द्रेण तु पाल्यते ।। ३५.
Then, for ten yugas, the entire realm was without rival; but afterwards, the undiminishing three worlds were protected by mighty Indra.
प्रह्लादस्य ततश्चादस्त्रैलोक्यं कालपर्ययात् । पर्यायेण च संप्राप्ते त्रैलोक्ये पाकशासनः ।। ३५.
After that, by the turn of time, the three worlds passed from Prahlada; and when the appointed time arrived, Pakaśāsana (Indra) ruled the three worlds.
ततोऽसुरान् परित्यज्य यज्ञे देवा उपागमन् । यज्ञे देवानथ गते काव्यं ते ह्यसुराब्रुवन् ।। ३५.
Then, abandoning the Asuras, the gods approached the sacrifice; and when the gods had gone to the sacrifice, the Asuras spoke to Kāvya.
कृतं नो मिषतां राष्ट्रं त्यक्त्वा यज्ञं पुनर्गताः। स्थातुं न शक्नुमो ह्यद्य प्रविशामो रसातलम् ।। ३५.
"Our kingdom has been taken from us before our very eyes; having abandoned the sacrifice, they have returned again. Today we are unable to stand—let us enter the netherworld."
एवमुक्तोऽब्रवीदेतान् विषण्णः सान्त्वयन् गिरा। माभैष्ट धारयिष्यामि तेजसा स्वेन चासुराः ।। ३५.
Thus addressed, Kāvya, distressed, consoled them with words: "Do not fear, Asuras; I will sustain you with my own power."
वृष्टिरोषधयश्चैव रसा वसु च यद्वयम्। कृत्स्ना मयि च तिष्ठन्ति पादस्तेषां सुरेषु वै। युष्मदर्थं प्रदास्यामि तत्सर्वं धार्यते मया ।। ३५.
"The rain, the plants, the waters, and the wealth—all that exists in me; their share among the gods is only through my feet. For your sake, I will grant all this; I will sustain it all."
ततो देवासुरान् दृष्ट्वा धृतान् काव्येन धीमता। अमन्त्रयंस्तदा ते वै संविग्ना विजिगीषया ।। ३५.
Then, seeing the Asuras supported by the wise Kāvya, the gods, anxious and eager for victory, conferred together.
एष काव्य इदं सर्वं व्यावर्त्तयति नो बलात् । साधु गच्छामहे तूर्णं क्षीणान्नाप्याययस्व तान् । प्रसह्य हत्वा शिष्टान् वै पातालं प्रापयामहे ।। ३५.
"This Kāvya is forcibly turning everything away from us. Come, let us go quickly; when their food is exhausted, revive them. Having slain the remaining ones by force, let us send them to the underworld."
ततो देवाः सुसंरब्धा दानवानभिसृत्य वै। जध्नुस्तै र्वध्यमानास्ते काव्यमेवाभिदुद्रुवुः ।। ३५.
Then the gods, greatly enraged, attacked the Dānavas; as they were being struck down, those Dānavas fled to Kāvya.
ततः काव्यस्तु तान्दृष्ट्वा तूर्णं देवैरभिद्रुतान्। समरेऽक्त्रक्षतार्त्तांस्तान् देवेभ्यस्तान् दितेः सुतान् ।। ३५.
Then Kāvya, seeing them swiftly pursued by the gods, wounded and distressed in battle, rescued those sons of Diti from the gods.
काव्यो दृष्ट्वा स्थितान् देवान् तत्र देवोऽभ्यचिन्तयत्। तानुवाच ततो ध्यात्वा पूर्ववृत्तमनुस्मरन् ।। ३५.
Kāvya, seeing the gods standing there, reflected; then, recalling past events, he addressed them after meditating.
त्रैलोक्यं विजितं सर्वं वामनेन त्रिभिः क्रमैः । बलिर्बद्धो हतो जम्भो निहतश्च विरोचनः ।। ३५.
"The entire three worlds were conquered by Vāmana in three strides; Bali was bound, Jambha was slain, and Virocana was killed."
महार्हेषु द्वादशसु संग्रामेषु सुरैर्हताः। तैस्तैरुपायैर्भूयिष्ठा निहता ये प्रधानतः ।। ३५.
"In twelve great battles, the foremost among the Asuras were slain by the gods, mostly through various strategies."
किञ्चिच्छिष्टास्तु वै यूयं युद्धेष्वन्त्येषु वै स्वयम्। नीतिं वो हि विधास्यामि कालः कश्चित्प्रतीक्ष्यताम् ।। ३५.
"You, who remain, are but a few, having survived the last battles. I will devise a strategy for you; wait for some time."
यास्याम्यहं महादेवं मन्त्रार्थे विजयाय वः। अग्निमाप्याययेद्धोता मन्त्रैरेव बृहस्पतिः ।। ३५.
"I will go to Mahādeva for the sake of mantras, so that you may be victorious; Agni, the Hotṛ, will be invigorated by mantras from Bṛhaspati."
ततो यास्याम्यहं देवं मन्त्रार्थे नीललोहितम्। युष्माननुग्रहीष्यामि पुनः पश्चादिहागतः ।। ३५.
"Then I will go to the god Nīlalohita for the sake of mantras; after returning here, I will again show you favor."
यूयं तपश्चरध्वं वै संवृता वल्कलैर्वने। न वै देवा वधिष्यन्ति यावदागमनं मम ।। ३५.
You all should practice austerities, withdrawn in the forest, clad in bark garments; the gods will not attack you until my return.
अप्रतीपांस्ततो मन्त्रान् देवात् प्राप्य महेश्वरात्। योत्स्यामहे पुनर्देवांस्ततः प्राप्स्यथ वै जयम् ।। ३५.
Then, having obtained unfailing mantras from the great lord Maheshvara, we shall again fight the gods; after that, you will surely attain victory.
