He caused the pair to grow, increasing your brilliance; among the gods, all the knowers of the Veda, and likewise the royal sages.
All are devoted to Vedic mantras, endowed with the qualities of the lords of beings; the infinite Brahman, truth, and supreme austerity on earth.
For indeed, all of us here are your progeny, O Lord—Brahma, the brahmins, and all the worlds, both moving and unmoving.
Having first created Marici, along with the gods and the sages, we have contemplated offspring here and now desire progeny.
In that sacrifice, O illustrious one, the gods together with the sages, born from this lineage, became lords of their respective places and times.
Yet, they did not establish these beings in that same form; rather, from the beginning of the age to its end, they established these creatures.
Then the teacher of the worlds spoke, considering the highest truth: 'Thus, O gods, having deliberated, you were created by me, without doubt; these great sages are again born from your lineage.'
Of them, I shall recount the lineage of Bhrigu, the ancient great soul, in detail and in order, beginning with the first progenitor.
The incomparable, noble, and auspicious wife of Bhrigu was the renowned divine daughter of Hiranyakashipu, and Paulomi, the beautiful daughter of Puloman.
From Bhrigu, the divine one gave birth to Kavi, foremost among those who know the Vedas, the teacher of gods and asuras, known as Shukra, the planet and son of Kavi.
That Shukra is also called Ushanas, and by name Kavi as well; the illustrious mind-born daughter of the Pitrs, drinkers of soma, named Angi, became Shukra's wife and bore him four sons.
Endowed with Brahma's radiance, he thus became foremost among knowers of Brahman; and from that same Angi, four sons were born to Shukra.
Tvashtri and Varutri—these two, and also Shanda and Marka, these two as well; they, shining like the sun, were like Brahma in power.
Ranjana, Prithu, Ashmi, and the wise Brihadgira—these are the sons of Varutri, devoted to Brahman and worshippers of the gods.
For the destruction of unrighteous sacrifice, they approached Manu and engaged him; seeing dharma being cast aside, Indra spoke to Manu.
'With these very ones, I will indeed cause you to perform the sacrifice,' said Indra; hearing these words of Indra, they departed from that place.
When they had vanished, Indra freed the wives and the mind of Dharma from captivity, and then pursued her.
Then, those ascetics striving for Indra's destruction, when they arrived there and were seen again, Indra struck down the wicked; then he slept on the southern side of the altar of the god of gods.
As they were being devoured there by the sala-wolves, their heads fell, and from them date-palms arose.
Thus, the sons of Varutri were formerly slain by Indra in the sacrifice, and Devayani became the daughter of Shukra.
Triśiras, of manifold forms, was the great son of Tvaṣṭṛ; and Viśvakarman, also called Yama, is known as the younger brother of Viśvarūpa.
From Bhṛgu were born the Bhṛgus, the divine sages, twelve sons in all; the goddess bore them all, and Kāvyas were also the sons of the lord.
Bhuvana, Bhāvana, and others likewise, Kratu, Śravā, and Mūrdhā, Vyaśaya, Vyaśruṣa, Prasava, and also Aja—these twelve are remembered as lords.
Thus these twelve Bhṛgus are known as sacrificial deities; Paulomī gave birth to a son, most learned, self-controlled, and mighty.
Afflicted in the eighth month by a cruel act while in the womb, Cyavana was thus born; Cyavana, conscious, was the son of Pracetasa, and from Prācetasa, out of Cyavana’s wrath, was born Adhvāna, the unaging man.
Bhārgava begot two sons with Sukanyā: Ātmavān and Dadhīca, both esteemed as virtuous.
Sārasvata was born from Dadhīca and Sarasvatī; Rucī, the noble lady of the Nāhuṣa line, was the wife of Ātmavān.
From him was born the sage Ūrva, of great fame, who emerged by splitting the thigh; Aurva was radiant, resembling blazing fire.
Jamadagni was born to Ṛcīka and Satyavatī; and in the lineage of Bhṛgu, from Ruci, came those of the Rudra and Viṣṇu lines.
From the Viṣṇu line of Agni was born Jamadagni; Reṇukā, wife of Jamadagni, gave birth to Rāma, equal in prowess to Indra, composed of Brahmin and Kṣatriya qualities, and of immeasurable brilliance.
