अतोऽस्य सह देवायां शूरो जज्ञेऽभयासखः। शार्ङ्गदेवाजनत्तम्बुं शौरी जज्ञे कुलोद्वहम् ।। ३४.
Thus, with Devā, Śūra begot Abhayāsakha; Śārṅgadeva produced Tambu, and Śauri begot Kulodvaha.
उपसङ्गं वसुञ्चापि तनयौ देवरक्षितौ। एवं दश सुतास्तस्य कंसस्तानप्यघातयत् ।। ३४.
Upasaṅga and Vasu, sons protected by the gods, were also born; thus, Kaṃsa killed these ten sons as well.
विजयं रोजनञ्चैव वर्द्धमानं तथैव च। एतान् सर्व्वान् महाभागानुपदेवा व्यजायत ।। ३४.
Vijaya, Rojana, and Vardhamāna—these illustrious sons were born from Upadevā.
स्वगाहवं महात्मानं वृक देवी त्वजायत । आगाही च स्वसा चैव सुरूपा शिशिरायिणी ।। ३४.
Vṛka Devī gave birth to Svagāhava, a great soul; Āgāhī and Svasā, as well as Surūpā and Śiśirāyiṇī, were also born.
सप्तमं देवकीपुत्रं सुनासा सुषुवे भुवम्। गवेषणं महाभागं सङ्ग्रामे चित्र योधिनम् ।। ३४.
The seventh son of Devakī, Sunāsā, was born on earth; Gaveṣaṇa, illustrious and a distinguished warrior in battle.
श्राद्धदेवं पुरा येन वने विरचिता द्विजाः। शैब्यायामददच्छौरिः पुत्रं कौशिकमव्ययम् ।। ३४.
Śrāddhadeva, for whom the twice-born performed rites in the forest, was given by Śauri to Śaibyā as an imperishable son, Kauśika.
सुगन्धी वनराजी च शौरेरास्तां परिग्रहः। पुण्ड्रश्च कपिलश्चैव वसुदेवात्मजौ हि तौ। तयो राजाऽभवत् पुण्ड्रः कपिलस्तु वनं ययो ।। ३४.
Sugandhī and Vanarājī were wives of Śauri; Puṇḍra and Kapila, sons of Vasudeva, were born to them. Puṇḍra became king, while Kapila went to the forest.
तस्यां समभवद्वीरो वसुदेवात्मजो बली। राजा नाम निषादोऽसौ प्रथमः स धनुर्द्धरः ।। ३४.
A mighty hero was born to Vasudeva from her; he was the first king named Niṣāda, bearer of the bow.
विख्यातो देवरातस्य महाभागः सुतोऽभवत्। पण्डितानां मतं प्राहुर्देवश्रवसमुद्भवम् ।। ३४.
The illustrious son of Devarata became renowned; the learned declare that he was born of Devaśravas.
अस्मक्यां लभते पुत्रमनादृष्टिं यशस्विनम्। निवर्त्तः शक्रशत्रुघ्नं श्राद्धदेवं महाबलम् ।। ३४.
In the Asmaka lineage, a son was obtained, famed and respected; Nivartta, mighty in strength, destroyer of Indra’s foes, and devoted to ancestral rites.
अजायत श्राद्धदेवो निषधादिर्यतः श्रुतः। एकलव्यो महावीर्यो निषादैः परिवर्द्धितः ।। ३४.
Śrāddhadeva was born, from whom Niṣadha and others are known; Ekalavya, of great valor, was raised among the Niṣādas.
गण्डूषायानपत्याय कृष्णस्तुष्टोऽददत् सुतौ। चारुदेष्णञ्च साम्बञ्च कृतास्त्रौ शस्तलक्षणौ ।। ३४.
To Gaṇḍūṣā, who was childless, Kṛṣṇa, being pleased, gave two sons: Cārudeṣṇa and Sāmba, both skilled in weapons and bearing auspicious marks.
तन्तिजस्तन्तिमालश्च स्वपुत्रौ कनकस्य तु। वस्तावनेस्त्वपुत्राय वसुदेवः प्रतापवान्। सौतिर्ददौ सुतं वीरं शौरिं कौशिकमेव च ।। ३४.
Tantija and Tantimāla were the own sons of Kanaka; to Vastāvan, who was sonless, the powerful Vasudeva gave, as a foster son, the heroic Śauri and also Kauśika.
तपाश्च कोधनुश्चैव विरजाः श्यामसृञ्जिमौ। अनपत्योऽभवच्छ्यामः श्यामकस्तु वनं ययौ। जुगुप्समानो भोजत्वं राजर्षित्वमवाप्नुयात् ।। ३४.
Tapā and Kodhanu, as well as Virajā and Śyāmasṛñji, were born; Śyāma remained childless, and Śyāmaka went to the forest, shunning the state of being a Bhoja, yet attained royal sagehood.
य इदं जन्म कृष्णस्य पठते नियतव्रतः। श्रावयेद्ब्राह्मणञ्चापि सुमहत्सुखमाप्नुयात् ।। ३४.
Whoever recites this birth of Kṛṣṇa with steadfast discipline, or has it recited to a Brāhmaṇa, attains great happiness.
देवदेवो महातेजाः पूर्व्वं कृष्णः प्रजापतिः । विहारार्थं मनुष्येषु जज्ञे नारायणः प्रभुः ।। ३४.
The god of gods, of great splendor, Kṛṣṇa, was formerly the lord of creatures; for the sake of sport among humans, Nārāyaṇa, the master, was born.
देवक्यां वसुदेवेन तपसा पुष्करेक्षणः। चतुर्बाहुः स विज्ञेयो दिव्यरूपः श्रियान्वितः ।। ३४.
Through the austerities of Devakī and Vasudeva, the lotus-eyed one, four-armed, divine in form and endowed with fortune, was to be known.
प्रकाशो भगवान् योगी कृष्णो मानुषमागतः। अव्यक्तोऽव्यक्तलिङ्गस्थः स एव भगवान् प्रभुः ।। ३४.
The blessed Lord, the yogin Kṛṣṇa, manifest in human form, though unmanifest and abiding in an unmanifest sign, is that very Lord and master.
नारायणो यतश्चक्रे प्रभवं चाव्ययो हि सः। देवो नारायणो भूत्वा हरिरासीत्सनातनः ।। ३४.
Nārāyaṇa, from whom creation arose and who is imperishable, having become the god Nārāyaṇa, was the eternal Hari.
योऽसृजच्चादिपुरुषं पुरा चक्रे प्रजापतिम्। अदितेरपि पुत्रत्वमेत्य यादवनन्दनः। देवो विष्णुरिति ख्यातः शक्रादवरजोऽभवत् ।। ३४.
He who formerly created the primeval man and made him lord of creatures, having become the son of Aditi, was known as the delight of the Yādavas, and as the god Viṣṇu, he became the younger brother of Indra.
प्रसादजं यस्य विभोरदित्याः पुत्रकारणम्। वधार्थं सुरशत्रूणां दैत्यदानवरक्षसाम् ।। ३४.
By whose favor Adityā obtained a son, for the purpose of destroying the enemies of the gods—the Daityas, Dānavas, and Rākṣasas.
ययातिवंशजस्याथ वसुदेवस्य धीमतः। कुलं पुण्यं यतः कर्म भेजे नारायणः प्रभुः ।। ३४.
Then, of the lineage of Yayāti, the virtuous Vasudeva’s family, due to its merit, was chosen by the Lord Nārāyaṇa for his deeds.
सागराः समकम्पन्त चेलुश्च धरणीधराः। जज्वलुश्चाग्निहोत्राणि जायमाने जनार्दने ।। ३४.
The oceans trembled, the mountains shook, and the sacrificial fires blazed brightly at the birth of Janārdana.
शिवाश्च प्रववुर्वाताः प्रशान्तिमभवद्रजः। ज्योतींष्यभ्यधिकं रेजुर्जायमाने जनार्दने ।। ३४.
Auspicious winds blew, the dust became calm, and the lights shone with greater brilliance at the birth of Janārdana.
अभिजिन्नाम नक्षत्रं जयन्ती नाम शर्वरी। मुहूर्त्तो विजयो नाम यत्र जातो जनार्दनः ।। ३४.
The star named Abhijit, the night called Jayantī, and the victorious moment—at that time Janārdana was born.
अव्यक्तः शाश्वतः कृष्णो हरिर्नारायणः प्रभुः। जायते स्मैव भगवान् नयनैर्मोहयन् प्रजाः ।। ३४.
Kṛṣṇa, eternal, imperceptible, Hari, Nārāyaṇa, the Lord, was indeed born, deluding people with his appearance.
आकाशात् पुष्पवृष्टीश्च ववर्ष त्रिदशेश्वरः। गीर्भिर्मङ्गलयुक्ताभिः स्तुवन्तो मधुसूदनम्। महर्षयः सगन्धर्वा उपतस्थुः सहस्रशः ।। ३४.
From the sky, the lord of the gods showered a rain of flowers; thousands of great sages and Gandharvas, singing auspicious praises, honored Madhusudana.
वसुदेवस्तु तं रात्रौ जातं पुत्रमधोक्षजम्। श्रीवत्सलक्षणं दृष्ट्वा दिवि दिव्यैः सुलक्षणैः। उवाच वसुदेवः स्वं रूपं संहर वै प्रभो ।। ३४.
But Vasudeva, seeing his son, the transcendent one, born that night with the mark of Śrīvatsa and other divine signs, said: 'O Lord, withdraw your true form.'
भीतोऽहं कंसतस्तात एतदेव ब्रवीम्यहम्। मम पुत्रा हतास्तेन ज्येष्ठास्तेऽद्भुतदर्शनाः ।। ३४.
'Father, I am afraid of Kamsa; this alone I say. My elder sons, wondrous to behold, have been slain by him.'
वसुदेववचः श्रुत्वा रूपं स हृतवान् प्रभुः। अनुज्ञातः पिता त्वेनं नन्दगोपगृहं गतः। उग्रसेनमते तिष्ठन् यशोदायै तदा ददौ ।। ३४.
Hearing Vasudeva's words, the Lord withdrew his form; permitted by his father, he went to the house of Nandagopa, and, following Ugrasena's counsel, then gave him to Yashoda.
