अहं तृतीय इत्यर्थस्तस्मादत्रिः स कीर्त्त्यते। केशैश्च निशितैर्भूतः पुलस्त्यस्तेन स स्मृतः ।। ४.
'I am the third'—thus is the meaning, and so he is called Atri; Pulastya was produced from sharp hair, and is thus remembered.
केशैर्लम्बैः समुद्भूतस्तस्मात्तु पुलहः स्मृतः । वसुमध्यात्समुत्पन्नो वसुमान् वसुधाश्रयः ।। ४.
Pulaha was born from long hair, and is thus remembered; Vasuman, who rests upon the earth, arose from the midst of the Vasus.
वसिष्ठ इति तत्त्वज्ञैः प्रोच्यते व्रह्मवादिभिः । इत्येते ब्रह्मणः पुत्रा मानसाः षण्महर्षयः ।। ४.
He is called Vasiṣṭha by those who know the truth, by the speakers of Brahman; thus these six great seers are the mind-born sons of Brahma.
लोकस्य सन्तानकरास्तैरिमा वर्द्धिताः प्रजाः। प्रजापतय इत्येवं पठ्यन्ते ब्रह्मणः सुताः ।। ४.
These, the progenitors of the world, increased these creatures; thus the sons of Brahma are called the lords of creation.
अपरे पितरो नाम एतैरेव महर्षिभिः। उत्पादिता ऋषिगणाः सप्त लोकेषु विश्रुताः ।। ४.
Other ancestors, known by that name, were also produced by these very great sages—seven groups of seers, renowned in the worlds.
मारीचा भार्गवाश्चैव तथैवाङ्गिरसोऽपरे। पौलस्त्याः पौलहाश्चैव वासिष्ठाश्चैव विश्रुताः। आत्रेयाश्च गणाः प्रोक्ताः पितॄणां लोकविश्रुताः ।। ४.
The lineages of Marīci, Bhṛgu, and also those of Aṅgiras, as well as the Paulastyas, Paulahas, and the famous Vāsiṣṭhas, and the Ātreyas—these groups of ancestors are declared, renowned throughout the worlds.
एते समासतस्तात पुरैव तु गुणास्त्रयः। अपूर्वश्च प्रकाशाश्च ज्योतिष्मन्तश्च विश्रुताः ।। ४.
These, O dear one, in summary, long ago possessed three qualities: they were unprecedented, radiant, and luminous, as is well known.
तेषां राजा यमो देवो यमैर्विहितकल्मषाः। अपरे प्रजानां पतयस्ताञ्छृणुध्वमतन्द्रिताः ।। ४.
Among them, Yama, the god, is king, and those with faults are restrained by the Yamas; others are lords of beings—listen to their names attentively.
कर्द्दमः कश्यपः शेषो विक्रान्तः सुश्रुवास्तथा। बहुपुत्रः कुमारश्च विवस्वान् स शुचिश्रवाः ।। ४.
Kardama, Kaśyapa, Śeṣa, Vikrānta, Suśruvas, Bahuputra, Kumāra, Vivasvān, and Śuciśravā—these are named.
प्रचेतसोऽरिष्टनेमिर्बहुलस्व प्रजापतिः। इत्येवमादयोऽन्येऽपि बहवश्च प्रजेश्वराः ।। ४.
Pracetas, Ariṣṭanemi, Bahulasva, and Prajāpati—thus, and many others as well, are lords of progeny.
कुशोच्चया वालखिल्याः सम्भूताः परमर्षयः। मनोजवाः सर्वगताः सार्वभौमाश्च तेऽभवन् ।। ४.
The Vālakhilyas, exalted sages, were born from the tips of Kuśa grass; they are swift as thought, all-pervading, and sovereign over the earth.
जाता भस्मव्यपोहिन्यां ब्रह्मर्षिगणसम्मताः। वैखानसा मुनिगणास्तपःश्रुतपरायणाः ।। ४.
Born from the ashes that dispel impurity, the Vaikhānasa groups of sages, esteemed among the Brahmarṣis, are devoted to austerity and sacred knowledge.
स्रोतोभ्यस्तस्य चोत्पन्नावश्विनौ रूपसम्मितौ। विदुर्जन्माक्षरजसो विमला नेत्रसम्भवाः ४.
From his streams were born the Aśvins, equal in form, whose birth is known to be pure, free from stain, and arising from the eyes.
ज्येष्ठाः प्रजानां पतयः स्रोतोभ्यस्तस्य जज्ञिरे। ऋषयो रोमकूपेभ्यस्तथा स्वेदमलोद्भवाः ।। ४.
The eldest lords of beings were born from his streams; the seers from his hair follicles, and others arose from the impurities of sweat.
दारुणा हि रुते मासा निर्यासाः पक्षसन्धयः। वत्सरा ये त्वहोरात्राः पित्रं ज्योतिश्च दारुणम् ।। ४.
The months are indeed harsh, the fortnights are their junctions; the years, days and nights, and the father is the harsh light.
रौद्रं लोहितमित्याहुर्लोहितं कनकं स्मृतम्। तन्मैत्रमिति विज्ञेयं धूमश्च पशवः स्मृताः ।। ४.
That which is fierce is called red, and red is considered gold; that is to be known as friendly, and smoke is said to be the animals.
येऽर्च्चिषस्तस्य ते रुद्रास्तथादित्याः समुद्भवाः। अङ्गारेभ्यः समुत्पन्ना ज्योतिषो दिव्यमानुषाः ।। ४.
Those who are his flames are the Rudras, and likewise the Ādityas are born; from the embers arose the divine and human lights.
आदिमानस्य लोकस्य ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मसमुद्भवः। सर्वकामदमित्याहुस्तत्र कन्यामुदाहरन् ।। ४.
Brahmā, born from Brahman, is the first of the world of mind; he is called the fulfiller of all desires, and there a maiden is mentioned.
ब्रह्मा सुरगुरुस्तत्र त्रिदशैः संप्रसीदति। इमे वै जनयिष्यन्ति प्रजाः सर्वाः प्रजेश्वराः ।। ४.
There, Brahmā, the teacher of the gods, is pleased with the thirty-three gods; these lords of beings will indeed generate all creatures.
स्वे प्रजानां पतयः सर्वे चापि तपस्विनः। तत्प्रसादादिमाँल्लोकान्धारयेयुरिमाः क्रियाः ।। ४.
All the lords of beings, and also the ascetics, by his favor, would sustain these worlds and their rites from the beginning.
द्वन्द्वं संवर्द्धयामास तव तेजोविवर्द्धनम्। देवेषु वेदविद्वांसः सर्वे राजर्षयस्तथा ।। ४.
He caused the pair to grow, increasing your brilliance; among the gods, all the knowers of the Veda, and likewise the royal sages.
वेदमन्त्र पराः सर्वे प्रजापतिगुणोद्भवाः। अनन्तं ब्रह्म सत्यञ्च तपश्च परमं भुवि ।। ४.
All are devoted to Vedic mantras, endowed with the qualities of the lords of beings; the infinite Brahman, truth, and supreme austerity on earth.
सर्वे हि वयमेते च तवैव प्रसवः प्रभो। ब्रह्म च ब्राह्मणाश्चैव लोकाश्चैव चराचराः ।। ४.
For indeed, all of us here are your progeny, O Lord—Brahma, the brahmins, and all the worlds, both moving and unmoving.
मरीचिमादितः कृत्वा देवाश्च ऋषिभिः सह। अपत्यानीह सञ्चिन्त्य तेऽपत्यङ्कामयामहे ।। ४.
Having first created Marici, along with the gods and the sages, we have contemplated offspring here and now desire progeny.
तस्मिन् यज्ञे महाभागा देवाश्च ऋषिभिः सह। एतद्वंशसमुद्भूताः स्थानकालाभिमानिनः ।। ४.
In that sacrifice, O illustrious one, the gods together with the sages, born from this lineage, became lords of their respective places and times.
न च तेनैव रूपेण स्थापयेयुरिमाः प्रजाः। युगादिनिधनाच्चैव स्थापयेयुरिमाः प्रजाः ।। ४.
Yet, they did not establish these beings in that same form; rather, from the beginning of the age to its end, they established these creatures.
ततोऽब्रवील्लोकगुरुः परमित्यविचारयन् । एवं देवा विनिश्चित्य मया सृष्टा न संशयः। भवतां वंशसम्भूताः पुनरेते महर्षयः ।। ४.
Then the teacher of the worlds spoke, considering the highest truth: 'Thus, O gods, having deliberated, you were created by me, without doubt; these great sages are again born from your lineage.'
तेषां भृघोः कीर्तयिष्ये वंशं पूर्वमहात्मनः। विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्या च प्रथमस्य प्रजापतेः ।। ४.
Of them, I shall recount the lineage of Bhrigu, the ancient great soul, in detail and in order, beginning with the first progenitor.
भार्या भृगोरप्रतिमे उत्तमेऽभिजने शुभे। हिरण्यकशिपोः कन्या दिव्या नाम परिश्रुता। पुलोम्नश्चापि पौलोमी दुहिता वर वर्णिनी ।। ४.
The incomparable, noble, and auspicious wife of Bhrigu was the renowned divine daughter of Hiranyakashipu, and Paulomi, the beautiful daughter of Puloman.
भृगोस्त्वजनयद्दिव्या काव्यं वेदविदां वरम्। देवासुराणामाचार्यं शुक्रङ्कविसुतं ग्रहम् ।। ४.
From Bhrigu, the divine one gave birth to Kavi, foremost among those who know the Vedas, the teacher of gods and asuras, known as Shukra, the planet and son of Kavi.
