Then, as the tumultuous battle began between Bhoja and Krishna, Shatadhanvan did not see Akrura anywhere in any direction.
Though able, Akrura did not join, due to age, after Bhoja and Janardana had dismounted from their chariots with their horses unharmed.
Then, filled with fear, he resolved again to flee, and traveled over a hundred yojanas in his flight.
The horse named Vijñātahṛdayā, capable of going a hundred yojanas, was the mare of Bhoja, by which he fought Krishna.
That mare, with greatly increased speed, covered a hundred yojanas of road, but when seen from the chariot, she exhausted Shatadhanvan.
Then, O twice-born, the horses, exhausted and fatigued, gave up their lives on the chariot, and Krishna spoke to Rama.
'Stay here, O mighty-armed one; I have seen the horses are spent. Going on foot, I will seize the Syamantaka jewel.'
Then Achyuta, proceeding on foot, slew Shatadhanvan, the king of Mithila and master of supreme weapons.
But after slaying the mighty Bhoja, he did not see the Syamantaka jewel; then the wielder of the plough said to Krishna, 'Return the jewel.'
Krishna replied, 'It is not here.' Then Rama, filled with anger, repeatedly uttered words of reproach to Janardana.
Out of brotherly affection, I forgive this; may all be well with you, I shall depart now. I have no grievance with the woman, with you, nor with the Vṛṣṇis.
Then Rāma, destroyer of enemies, entered Mithilā and was honored by the king of Mithilā with all desired offerings.
At that very time, Babhrū, foremost among the wise, performed all kinds of unrestricted sacrifices of various forms.
The illustrious king, son of Gādhi, entered the consecrated enclosure, wearing armor for protection, for the sake of the Syamantaka jewel.
He dedicated wealth, excellent jewels, and various kinds of goods in the sacrifices when sixty years had passed.
These famous sacrifices of that great soul were called 'Akrūra-yajñas,' all abundant in food and gifts, fulfilling every desire.
Then King Duryodhana, the mighty lord, went to Mithilā and there received divine training in mace-fighting from Balabhadra.
Afterward, having pleased the Brāhmaṇas together with the great warriors of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, he was brought to Dvārakā by the great-souled Kṛṣṇa.
The best of men, accompanied by Akrūra and the Andhakas, arrived; in battle, the mighty one slew Śatrughna together with Bandhumān.
To the sons of Śvaphalka, the two illustrious and exceedingly strong sons of Bhaṅgakāra, renowned among men, were born in Nara.
Those two, Śatrughna and Bandhumān, were born to the chief of the Andhakas for the destruction of Bhaṅgakāra; Kṛṣṇa was not pleased because of this.
Fearing discord among his kin, he overlooked it; and when Akrūra departed, Indra did not send rain.
Because of the drought, the land was ruined and famine threatened; then the Kukuras and Andhakas sought to appease Akrūra.
When that lord of gifts returned again to Dvāravatī, then the thousand-eyed one caused rain to fall into the ocean's womb.
Akrūra, the glorious chief of the Yadus, gave his virtuous sister as a bride to Vāsudeva, to win his favor.
Then Kṛṣṇa, knowing through yoga that the jewel had gone to Babhrū, spoke to Akrūra in the midst of the assembly.
O lord, that precious jewel which is in your hand—give it up; do not harbor any resentment in this matter.
When sixty years had passed, the anger that arose in me then became deeply rooted, having once arisen, and remained great from that time.
Then, at Krishna's word, in the assembly of all the Sātvatas, Babhrū, wise and untroubled, gave that jewel.
Thereafter, the enemy-subduer received the jewel from Babhrū's hand with sincerity, and joyfully gave it back to Babhrū.
