तदा हि प्रार्थयामास सत्यभामामनिन्दिताम्। अक्रूरो रत्नमन्विच्छन् मणिञ्चैव स्यमन्तकम् ।। ३४.
Then Akrūra, desiring the jewel, sought the blameless Satyabhāmā and also the Syamantaka jewel.
भद्रकारं ततो हत्वा शतधन्वा महाबलः। रात्रौ तं मणिमादाय ततोऽक्रूराय दत्तवान् ।। ३४.
After killing Bhadrakāra, the mighty Śatadhanvan took the jewel at night and then gave it to Akrūra.
अक्रूरस्तु तदा रत्नमादाय स नरर्षभः। समयं कारणं चक्रे बोध्यो नान्यैस्त्वयेत्युत ।। ३४.
Then Akrura, that foremost of men, took the jewel and made an agreement, saying, 'Let no one else but you be informed of this.'
वयमभ्युपपत्स्यामः कृष्णेन त्वं प्रधर्षितः। मम च द्वारकाः सर्वा वशे तिष्टन्त्यसंशयम् ।। ३४.
'We shall comply; if you are overpowered by Krishna, all the people of Dvaraka will certainly remain under my control.'
हते पितरि दुःशार्त्ता सत्यभामा यशस्विनी। प्रययौ रथमारुह्य नगरं वारणावतम् ।। ३४.
When her father was slain, the illustrious Satyabhama, stricken with grief, mounted her chariot and went to the city of Varanavata.
सत्यभामा तु तद्वृत्तं भोजस्य शतधन्वनः। भर्तुर्निवेद्य दुःखार्त्ता पार्श्वस्थाश्रूण्यवर्तयत् ।। ३४.
Satyabhama, afflicted by sorrow, reported to her husband the deeds of Shatadhanvan, son of Bhoja, and wept at his side.
पाण्डवानान्तु दग्धानां हरिः कृत्वोदकक्रियाम् । तुल्यार्थे चैव भ्रातॄणां नियोजयति सात्यकिम् ।। ३४.
Hari performed the funeral rites for the burned Pandavas, and for the same purpose he instructed Satyaki regarding their brothers.
तत स्त्वरितमागम्य द्वारकां मधुसूदनः। पूर्व्वजं हलिनं श्रीमानिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।। ३४.
Then Madhusudana swiftly came to Dvaraka and spoke these words to his elder brother, the illustrious wielder of the plough.
हतः प्रसेनः सिंहेन सत्राजिच्छतधन्वना। स्यमन्तकमहं मार्गे तस्य प्रहर हे प्रभो ।। ३४.
'Prasena was killed by a lion, and Satrajit by Shatadhanvan; Syamantaka is on his path—attack there, O lord!'
तदारोह रथं शीघ्रं भोजं हत्वा महाबलम्। स्यमन्तको महाबाहो तदास्माकं भविष्यति ।। ३४.
'Now mount the chariot quickly; after slaying the mighty Bhoja, O strong-armed one, the Syamantaka jewel will be ours.'
ततः प्रवृत्ते युद्धे तु तुमुले भोजकृष्णयोः। शतधन्वा न चाक्रूरमवैक्षत् सर्वतो दिशि ।। ३४.
Then, as the tumultuous battle began between Bhoja and Krishna, Shatadhanvan did not see Akrura anywhere in any direction.
अनष्टाश्वावरोहन्तु कृत्वा भोजजनार्दनौ। शक्तोऽपि साध्याद्वार्द्धक्यान्नाक्रूरोऽभ्युपपद्यत ।। ३४.
Though able, Akrura did not join, due to age, after Bhoja and Janardana had dismounted from their chariots with their horses unharmed.
अपयाने ततो बुद्धिं भूयश्चक्रे भयान्वितः। योजनानां शतं साग्रं यया च प्रत्यपद्यत ।। ३४.
Then, filled with fear, he resolved again to flee, and traveled over a hundred yojanas in his flight.
विज्ञातहृदया नाम शतयोजनगामिनी। भोजस्य वढवादित्यो यया कृष्णमयोधयत् ।। ३४.
The horse named Vijñātahṛdayā, capable of going a hundred yojanas, was the mare of Bhoja, by which he fought Krishna.
प्रवृद्धवेगा वडवा त्वध्वनां शतयोजनम्। दृष्टा रथगतिस्तस्य शतधन्वानमर्द्दयत् ।। ३४.
That mare, with greatly increased speed, covered a hundred yojanas of road, but when seen from the chariot, she exhausted Shatadhanvan.
ततस्तस्य हयास्ते तु श्रमात् खेदाच्च वै द्विजाः। खमुत्पेतू रथप्राणाः कृष्णो राममथाब्रवीत् ।। ३४.
Then, O twice-born, the horses, exhausted and fatigued, gave up their lives on the chariot, and Krishna spoke to Rama.
तिष्ठस्वेह महाबाहो दृष्टदोषा मया हयाः। पद्य्भां गत्वा हरिष्यामि मणिरत्नं स्यमन्तकम् ।। ३४.
'Stay here, O mighty-armed one; I have seen the horses are spent. Going on foot, I will seize the Syamantaka jewel.'
पद्भ्यामेव ततो गत्वा शतधन्वानमच्युतः। मिथिलाधिपतिं तं वै जघान परमास्त्रवित् ।। ३४.
Then Achyuta, proceeding on foot, slew Shatadhanvan, the king of Mithila and master of supreme weapons.
स्यमन्तकं न चापश्यद्धत्वा भोजं महाबलम्। निवृत्तं चाब्रवीत् कृष्णं रत्नं देहीति लाङ्गली ।। ३४.
But after slaying the mighty Bhoja, he did not see the Syamantaka jewel; then the wielder of the plough said to Krishna, 'Return the jewel.'
नास्तीति कृष्णश्चोवाच ततो रामो रुषान्वितः। धिक्छब्दमसकृत् पूर्व्वं प्रत्युवाच जनार्द्दनम् ।। ३४.
Krishna replied, 'It is not here.' Then Rama, filled with anger, repeatedly uttered words of reproach to Janardana.
भ्रातृत्वान्मर्षयाम्येष स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु व्रजाम्यहम्। कृत्यं न मे द्रारकया न त्वया न च वृष्णिभिः ।। ३४.
Out of brotherly affection, I forgive this; may all be well with you, I shall depart now. I have no grievance with the woman, with you, nor with the Vṛṣṇis.
प्रविवेश ततो रामो मिथिलामरिमर्द्दनः। सर्व्वकामैरुपहृतैर्मैथिलेनैव पूजितः ।। ३४.
Then Rāma, destroyer of enemies, entered Mithilā and was honored by the king of Mithilā with all desired offerings.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु बभ्रुर्मतिमतांवरः। नानारूपान् क्रतून् सर्व्वानाजहार निरर्गलान् ।। ३४.
At that very time, Babhrū, foremost among the wise, performed all kinds of unrestricted sacrifices of various forms.
दीक्षामयं सकवचं रक्षार्थं प्रविवेश ह। स्यमन्तककृते राजा गाधिपुत्रो महायशाः ।। ३४.
The illustrious king, son of Gādhi, entered the consecrated enclosure, wearing armor for protection, for the sake of the Syamantaka jewel.
अर्थान् रत्नानि चाग्र्याणि द्रव्याणि विविधानि च । षष्टिवर्षगते काले यज्ञेषु विन्ययोजयत् ।। ३४.
He dedicated wealth, excellent jewels, and various kinds of goods in the sacrifices when sixty years had passed.
अक्रूरयज्ञ इत्येते ख्यातास्तस्य महात्मनः। बह्वन्नदक्षिणाः सर्व्वे सर्व्वकामप्रदायिनः ।। ३४.
These famous sacrifices of that great soul were called 'Akrūra-yajñas,' all abundant in food and gifts, fulfilling every desire.
अथ दुर्य्योधनो राजा गत्वाऽथ मिथिलां प्रभुः। गदाशिक्षां ततो दिव्यां बलभद्रादवाप्तवान् ।। ३४.
Then King Duryodhana, the mighty lord, went to Mithilā and there received divine training in mace-fighting from Balabhadra.
प्रसाद्य तु ततो विप्रा वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथैः। आनीतो द्वारकामेव कृष्णेन च महात्मना ।। ३४.
Afterward, having pleased the Brāhmaṇas together with the great warriors of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, he was brought to Dvārakā by the great-souled Kṛṣṇa.
अक्रूरमन्धकैः सार्द्धमुपायात् पुरुषर्षभः। युद्धे हत्वा तु शत्रुग्नं सह बन्धुमता बली ।। ३४.
The best of men, accompanied by Akrūra and the Andhakas, arrived; in battle, the mighty one slew Śatrughna together with Bandhumān.
श्वफल्कतनयायान्तु नरायां नरसत्तमौ। भङ्गकारस्य तनयो विश्रुतौ सुमहाबलौ ।। ३४.
To the sons of Śvaphalka, the two illustrious and exceedingly strong sons of Bhaṅgakāra, renowned among men, were born in Nara.
