तमतिप्रस्थितं भूयो विवस्वन्तं स शक्रजित्। प्रोवाचाग्निसवर्णं त्वं येन लोकान् प्रयास्यति। तदैव मणिरत्नं तन्मां भवान् दातुमर्हति ।। ३४.
As Vivasvant was about to depart, Śakrajit spoke again: 'You, who are of fiery splendor and by whom the worlds are traversed—at that very moment, you ought to give me that gem.'
स्यमन्तकं नाम मणिं दत्तवांस्तस्य भास्करः। स तमाबद्ध्य नगरं प्रविवेश महीपतिः ।। ३४.
The radiant Bhāskara gave him the gem called Syamantaka; and the king, having received it, entered his city.
तं जनाः पर्यधावन्त सूर्योऽयं गच्छतीति ह। सभां विस्माययित्वाथ पुरीमन्तःपुरं तथा ।। ३४.
People ran after him, saying, 'This is the Sun himself going!' Astonishing the assembly, he entered the inner city and the palace.
तं प्रसेनिजिते दिव्यं मणिरत्नं स्यमन्तकम्। ददौ भ्रात्रे नरपतिः प्रेम्णा शक्रजिदुत्तमम् ।। ३४.
The king, Śakrajit, lovingly gave the divine Syamantaka gem to his brother Prasena.
स्यमन्तको नाम मणिर्यस्य राष्ट्रे स्थितो भेवत् । कालवर्षी च पर्जन्यो न च व्याधिभयं तदा ।। ३४.
Wherever the Syamantaka gem resides in a kingdom, there is timely rain from the clouds and no fear of disease.
लिप्सां चक्रे प्रसेनात्तु मणिरत्नं स्यमन्तकम्। गोविन्दो न च तं लेभे शक्तोऽपि न जहार च ।। ३४.
Govinda desired to obtain the Syamantaka gem from Prasena, but though able, he did not seize it nor did he acquire it.
कदा चिन्मृगयां यातः प्रसेनस्तेन भूषितः। स्यमन्तककृते सिंहाद्वधं प्राप्तः सुदारुणम् ।। ३४.
Once, Prasena went hunting adorned with that gem, and because of the Syamantaka, he met a terrible death at the hands of a lion.
जाम्बवानृक्षराजस्तु तं सिंहं निजघान वै । आदाय च मणिं दिव्यं स्वं बिलं प्रविवेश ह ।। ३४.
Then Jāmbavān, king of the bears, slew that lion, took the divine gem, and entered his own cave.
तत्कर्म कृष्णस्य ततो वृष्ण्यन्धकमहत्तराः। मणौगृध्नुन्तु मन्वानास्तमेव विशशङ्किरे ।। ३४.
Because of this deed, the great Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas suspected Kṛṣṇa himself, thinking he coveted the gem.
मिथ्याभिशस्तिं तेभ्यस्तां बलवानरिसूदनः। अमृष्यमाणो भगवान् वनं स विचचार ह ।। ३४.
Unable to bear their false accusations, the mighty slayer of enemies, Bhagavān, wandered into the forest.
स तु प्रसेनमृगयामचरत्तत्र चाप्यथ। प्रसेनस्य पदं गृह्य पुरुषै राप्तकारिभिः ।। ३४.
There he searched for Prasena in the forest, and, with his men, followed Prasena's tracks.
ऋक्षवन्तं गिरिवरं विन्ध्यञ्च नगमुत्तमम्। अन्वेषणपरिश्रान्तः स ददर्श महामनाः ।। ३४.
Exhausted from searching, the high-minded one saw the mountain of the bears and the excellent Vindhya mountain.
साश्वं हतं प्रसेनं तं नाविन्दत्तत्र वै मणिम्। अथ सिंहः प्रसेनस्य शरीरस्याविदूरतः ।। ३४.
He did not find the gem there, but saw Prasena slain along with his horse; and nearby was the lion, not far from Prasena's body.
ऋक्षेण निहतो दृष्टः पादैऋक्षस्य सूचिताम्। पदैरन्वेषयामास गुहामृक्षस्य यादवः ।। ३४.
He saw the lion slain by a bear, and, following the bear's tracks, the Yādava began to search for the bear's cave.
महत्यतिबिले वाणीं शुश्राव प्रमदेरिताम्। धात्र्या कुमारमादाय सुतं जाम्बवतो द्विजाः। प्रीतिमत्याथ मणिना मारोदीरित्युदीरिताम् ।। ३४.
He heard a great tumultuous cry, uttered by a woman in distress; the nurse, taking the son of Jāmbavat, spoke to the child with affection, saying, 'Do not weep, dear one, for the jewel.'
प्रसेनमवधीत् सिंहः सिंहो जाम्बवता हतः। सुकुमारक मारोदीस्तव ह्येष स्यमन्तकः ।। ३४.
The lion killed Prasena, and the lion was slain by Jāmbavat; 'Do not weep, gentle child, for this is the Syamantaka jewel.'
व्यक्तीकृतञ्च शब्दं तं तूर्णं सोऽपि ययौ बिलम्। अपश्यच्च विलाभ्याशे प्रसेनमवदारितम्।। ३४.
He made that sound clear and quickly went to the cave; and there, near the entrance, he saw Prasena lying dead.
प्रविश्य चापि भगवास्तदृक्षबिलमञ्जसा। ददर्श ऋक्षराजानं जाम्बवन्तमुदारधीः ।। ३४.
Entering that cave directly, the blessed one saw the king of bears, Jāmbavat, of noble intellect.
युयुधे वासुदेवस्तु बिले जाम्बवता सह। बाहुभ्यामेव गोविन्दो दिवसानेकविंशतिम् ।। ३४.
Vāsudeva fought with Jāmbavat in the cave, and Govinda battled with his arms for twenty-one days.
प्रविष्टे च बिलं कृष्णे वासुदेव पुरःसराः । पुनर्द्वारवतीमेत्य हतं कृष्णं न्यवेदयन् ।। ३४.
When Krishna entered the cave, accompanied by Vāsudeva, they returned to Dvāravatī and reported that Krishna had been slain.
वासुदेवस्तु निर्जित्य जाम्बवन्तं महाबलम्। लेभे जाम्बवतीं कन्यामृक्षराजस्य सम्मताम् ।। ३४.
Vāsudeva, having defeated the mighty Jāmbavat, received Jāmbavatī, the daughter of the king of bears, who was agreeable to him.
भगवत्तेजसा ग्रस्तो जाम्बवान् प्रसभं मणिम्। सुतां जाम्बवतीमाशु विष्वक्सेनाय दत्तवान् ।। ३४.
Overcome by the divine brilliance of the blessed one, Jāmbavat forcefully gave the jewel and his daughter Jāmbavatī swiftly to Viṣvaksena.
मणिं स्यमन्तकं चैव जग्राहात्म विशुद्धये। अनुनीय ऋक्षराजं निर्ययौ च तदा बिलात् ।। ३४.
He took the Syamantaka jewel for the purification of himself, and, having reconciled with the king of bears, then departed from the cave.
एवं स मणिमादाय विशोद्ध्यात्मानमात्मना। ददौ सत्राजिते तं वै मणिं सात्वतसन्निधौ ।। ३४.
Thus, taking the jewel and purifying himself, he gave that jewel to Satrājit in the presence of the Sātvatas.
कन्यां पुनर्जाम्बवतीमुवाच मधुसूदनः। तस्मान्मिथ्याभिशापात् स व्यमुच्यत जनार्दनः ।। ३४.
Madhusūdana spoke again to Jāmbavatī, and from that false accusation, Janārdana was released.
इमां मिथ्याभिशस्तिं यः कृष्णस्येह व्यपोहिताम्। वेद मिथ्याभिशस्तेः स नाभिशस्यति कर्हिचित् ।। ३४.
Whoever knows that this false accusation against Krishna has been dispelled here, will never utter a false accusation.
दश स्वसृभ्यो भार्य्याभ्यः शत्रजित्तः शतं सुताः। ख्यातिमन्तस्त्रयस्तेषां भङ्गकारस्तु पूर्व्वजः। वीरो व्रतपतिश्चैव ह्यपस्वान्तश्च सुप्रियः ।। ३४.
Satrājit had a hundred sons from his ten wives; three of them were renowned: Bhaṅgakāra, the eldest, Vīra, and Vratapati, and Supriya, who was the youngest.
अथ द्वारवती नाम भङ्गकारस्य सुप्रजा। सुषुवे सा कुमारीस्तु तिस्रो रूपगुणान्विताः ।। ३४.
Then, Dvāravatī, the daughter of Bhaṅgakāra, who had good progeny, gave birth to three sons, all endowed with beauty and virtue.
सत्य भामोत्तमा स्त्रीणां व्रतिनीव दृढव्रता। तथा तपस्विनी चैव पिता कृष्णस्य तां ददौ ।। ३४.
Among women, Satyabhāmā was the best, steadfast in her vows like an ascetic; her father gave her to Krishna.
यत्तत् सत्राजिते कृष्णो मणिरत्नं स्यमन्तकम्। प्रादात्तदाहरद्रत्नं भोजेन शतधन्वना ।। ३४.
That jewel, the Syamantaka, which Krishna gave to Satrājit, was later taken by Bhoja, Śatadhanvan.
