पुत्रः सर्वगुणोपेतो मम भूयादिति स्म ह। संयोज्यात्मानमेवं सवर्णा सा जलमस्पृशत् ।। ३४.
He wished, 'May I have a son endowed with all virtues.' Thus, joining herself in this way, Savarṇā touched water.
सा चोपस्पर्शनात्तस्य चकार ऋषिमापगा। कल्याणञ्च नरपतेस्तस्य सा निम्नगोत्तमा ।। ३४.
By her touching, the river became a sage, and that excellent river became auspicious for the king.
चिन्तयाभिपरीताङ्गा जगामाथ विनिश्चयम्। नाधिगच्छामि तां नारीं यस्यामेवंविधः सुतः ।। ३४.
Her body overwhelmed by thought, she reached a decision: 'I cannot find a woman whose son would be like this.'
भवेत्सर्वगुणोपेतो राज्ञो देवावृधस्य हि। तस्मादस्य स्वयं चाहं भवाम्यद्य सहव्रता। जज्ञे तस्याः स्वयं हस्तो भावस्तस्य यथेरितः ।। ३४.
A son endowed with all virtues should be born to King Devāvṛdha; therefore, today I myself shall become his wife in the vow. Her own hand was created for her, and her disposition was as desired.
अथ भूत्वा कुमारी तु सावित्री परमं वचः। चिन्तयामास राजानं तामियेष स पर्थिवः ।। ३४.
Then, having become a maiden, Sāvitrī spoke the supreme word; the king desired her, and sought her.
तस्यामाधत्त गर्भं स तेजस्विनमुदारधीः। अथ सा नवमे मासि सुषुवे सरितांवरा ।। ३४.
She conceived by him, radiant and noble-minded; and in the ninth month, the river goddess gave birth.
पुत्रं सर्वगुणोपेतं यथा देवावृधेप्सितः। तत्र वंशे पुराणज्ञा गाथां गायन्ति वै द्विजाः ।। ३४.
She bore a son endowed with all virtues, as Devāvṛdha desired; in that lineage, the learned brahmins sing ancient verses.
गुणान् देवावृधस्यापि कीर्त्तयन्तो महात्मनः। यथैव श्रृणुते दूरात् संपश्यति तथान्तिकात् ।। ३४.
Reciting the virtues of the great-souled Devāvṛdha, just as he hears from afar, so he perceives from near.
बभ्रुः श्रेष्ठो मनुष्याणां देवैर्देवावृधः समः। पुरुषाः पञ्चषष्टिश्च सहस्राणि च सप्ततिः। येऽमृतत्वमनुप्राप्ता बभ्रुर्देवावृधादपि ।। ३४.
Babhru was the best among men, equal to the gods was Devāvṛdha; sixty-five men and seventy thousand who attained immortality surpassed even Devāvṛdha.
यज्वा दानपतिर्वीरो ब्रह्मण्यः सत्य वाग् बुधः। कीर्त्तिमांश्च महाभागः सात्त्वतानां महारथः ।। ३४.
He was a sacrificer, generous lord, heroic, devoted to Brahmins, truthful in speech, wise, renowned, greatly fortunate, and a mighty chariot-warrior among the Sāttvatas.
तस्यान्ववाये सुमहाभोजयेमार्तिकावलाः। गान्धारी चैव माद्री च वृष्णेर्भार्य्ये बभूवतुः ।। ३४.
In his lineage, the Sumahābhojas and the Mārtikāvalas flourished; Gāndhārī and Mādrī became wives of Vṛṣṇi.
गान्धारी जनयामास सुमित्रं मित्रनन्दनम्। माद्री युधाजितं पुत्रं सा तु वै देवमीढुषम् ।। ३४.
Gāndhārī gave birth to Sumitra, the delight of friends; Mādrī bore Yudhājit as her son, and also Deva-mīḍhuṣa.
अनमित्रं सुतञ्चैव तावुभौ पुरुषोत्तमौ। अनमित्रसुतो निघ्नो निघ्नस्य द्वौ बभूवतुः ।। ३४.
Both Anamitra and his son were excellent men; Anamitra's son was Nighna, and Nighna had two sons.
प्रसेनश्च महाभागः शक्रजिच्च सुतावुभौ। तस्य शक्रजितः पूर्वः सखा प्राणसमोऽभवत् ।। ३४.
Prasena, greatly fortunate, and Śakrajit were both sons; Śakrajit was formerly his companion, equal to his own life.
स कदाचिन्निशापाये रथेन रथिनांवरः। तोयकूलादपः स्प्रष्टुमुपस्थातुं ययौ रविम् ।। ३४.
Once, at the end of the night, the best among charioteers, with his chariot, went to touch water at the riverbank and to approach the sun.
तस्योपतिष्ठतः सूर्यो विवस्वानग्रतः स्थितः। अस्पष्टमूर्तिर्भगवां स्तेजोमण्डलवान् विभुः ।। ३४.
As he was approaching, the sun, Vivasvān, stood before him; the blessed lord, possessing a circle of radiance, appeared indistinct in form.
अथ राजा विवस्वन्तमुवाच स्थितमग्रतः। यथैव व्योम्नि पश्यामि त्वामहं ज्योतिषाम्पते ।। ३४.
Then the king spoke to Vivasvant, who stood before him: 'Just as I see you in the sky, O lord of lights, so I see you now.'
तेजोमण्डलिनञ्चैव तथैवाप्यग्रतः स्थितम्। को विशेषो विवस्वंस्ते साक्षादुपगतेन वै ।। ३४.
'And just as you stand before me, radiant and encircled with light—what difference is there between you appearing directly and as you appear in the sky?'
एतच्छ्रुत्वा स भगवान् मणिरत्नं स्यमन्तकम्। स्वकण्ठादवमुच्याथ बबन्ध नृपतेस्तदा ।। ३४.
Hearing this, the venerable one removed the Syamantaka gem from his own neck and then gave it to the king.
ततो विग्रहवन्तं तं ददर्श नृपतिस्तदा। प्रतिमामथ तां दृष्ट्वा मुहूर्त्तं कृतवांस्तथा ।। ३४.
Then the king saw him with a tangible form; and, having seen that image, he stood in contemplation for a moment.
तमतिप्रस्थितं भूयो विवस्वन्तं स शक्रजित्। प्रोवाचाग्निसवर्णं त्वं येन लोकान् प्रयास्यति। तदैव मणिरत्नं तन्मां भवान् दातुमर्हति ।। ३४.
As Vivasvant was about to depart, Śakrajit spoke again: 'You, who are of fiery splendor and by whom the worlds are traversed—at that very moment, you ought to give me that gem.'
स्यमन्तकं नाम मणिं दत्तवांस्तस्य भास्करः। स तमाबद्ध्य नगरं प्रविवेश महीपतिः ।। ३४.
The radiant Bhāskara gave him the gem called Syamantaka; and the king, having received it, entered his city.
तं जनाः पर्यधावन्त सूर्योऽयं गच्छतीति ह। सभां विस्माययित्वाथ पुरीमन्तःपुरं तथा ।। ३४.
People ran after him, saying, 'This is the Sun himself going!' Astonishing the assembly, he entered the inner city and the palace.
तं प्रसेनिजिते दिव्यं मणिरत्नं स्यमन्तकम्। ददौ भ्रात्रे नरपतिः प्रेम्णा शक्रजिदुत्तमम् ।। ३४.
The king, Śakrajit, lovingly gave the divine Syamantaka gem to his brother Prasena.
स्यमन्तको नाम मणिर्यस्य राष्ट्रे स्थितो भेवत् । कालवर्षी च पर्जन्यो न च व्याधिभयं तदा ।। ३४.
Wherever the Syamantaka gem resides in a kingdom, there is timely rain from the clouds and no fear of disease.
लिप्सां चक्रे प्रसेनात्तु मणिरत्नं स्यमन्तकम्। गोविन्दो न च तं लेभे शक्तोऽपि न जहार च ।। ३४.
Govinda desired to obtain the Syamantaka gem from Prasena, but though able, he did not seize it nor did he acquire it.
कदा चिन्मृगयां यातः प्रसेनस्तेन भूषितः। स्यमन्तककृते सिंहाद्वधं प्राप्तः सुदारुणम् ।। ३४.
Once, Prasena went hunting adorned with that gem, and because of the Syamantaka, he met a terrible death at the hands of a lion.
जाम्बवानृक्षराजस्तु तं सिंहं निजघान वै । आदाय च मणिं दिव्यं स्वं बिलं प्रविवेश ह ।। ३४.
Then Jāmbavān, king of the bears, slew that lion, took the divine gem, and entered his own cave.
तत्कर्म कृष्णस्य ततो वृष्ण्यन्धकमहत्तराः। मणौगृध्नुन्तु मन्वानास्तमेव विशशङ्किरे ।। ३४.
Because of this deed, the great Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas suspected Kṛṣṇa himself, thinking he coveted the gem.
मिथ्याभिशस्तिं तेभ्यस्तां बलवानरिसूदनः। अमृष्यमाणो भगवान् वनं स विचचार ह ।। ३४.
Unable to bear their false accusations, the mighty slayer of enemies, Bhagavān, wandered into the forest.
