तस्य पुत्रशतं ह्येव तालजङ्घा इति श्रुतम्। तेषां पञ्च गणाः ख्याता हैहयानां महात्मनाम् ।। ३२.
He too had a hundred sons, known as the Tālavaṅghas; among the great Haihayas, five clans became renowned.
वीरहोत्रा ह्यसङ्ख्याता भोजाश्चावर्तयस्तथा। तुण्डिकेराश्च विक्रान्तास्तालजङ्घास्तथैव च ।। ३२.
The Vīrahotras, countless in number, the Bhojas, Avartas, the valiant Tuṇḍikeras, and likewise the Tālavaṅghas.
वीरहोत्रसुतश्चापि अनन्तो नाम पार्थिवः। दुर्जयस्तस्य पुत्रस्तु बभूवामित्रदर्शनः ।। ३२.
Vīrahotra’s son was a king named Ananta; his son was Durjaya, formidable and a terror to his foes.
अनष्टद्रव्यता चैव तस्य राज्ञो बभूव ह। प्रभावेण महाराजः प्रजास्ताः पर्य्यपालयत् ।। ३२.
That king possessed inexhaustible wealth; by his power, the great king protected his subjects.
न तस्य वित्तनाशश्च नष्टं प्रतिलभेत सः। कार्तवीर्यस्य यो जन्म कथयेदिह धीमतः ।। ३२.
He who recounts here the birth of the wise Kārtavīrya will not suffer loss of wealth, and whatever is lost, he shall regain.
वित्तवान् भवत्यत्रैव धर्म्मश्चास्य विवर्द्धते। यथा त्वष्टा यथा दाता तथा स्वर्गे महीयते ।। ३२.
In this very world, he becomes wealthy and his righteousness increases; just as Tvaṣṭṛ and Dātā, so too is he honored in heaven.
ऋषय ऊचुः।। किमर्थं भुवनं दग्धमपवस्यं महात्मनाम्। कार्तवीर्येण विक्रम्य तन्नः प्रब्रूहि पृच्छताम् ।। ३३.
The sages said: For what reason was the world, the abode of the great souls, burned by Kārtavīrya's might? Tell us, for we ask.
रक्षिता स तु राजर्षिः प्रजानामिति नः श्रुतम्। कथं स रक्षिता भूत्वानाशयत्तत्तपोवनम् ।। ३३.
We have heard that this royal sage was the protector of the people; how did he, being a protector, destroy that sacred grove?
सूत उवाच।। आदित्यो विप्ररूपेण कार्तवीर्यमुपस्थितः। तृप्तिकामः प्रयच्छान्नमादित्योऽहं न संशयः ।। ३३.
Sūta said: The Sun, taking the form of a Brāhmaṇa, approached Kārtavīrya, desiring satisfaction, and asked for food, saying, 'I am the Sun, without doubt.'
राजोवाच।। भगवन् केन ते तुष्टिर्भवेद्ब्रूहि दिवाकर। कीदृशं भोजनं दझि श्रुत्वा च विदधाम्यहम् ।। ३३.
The king said: O blessed one, tell me, O Sun, by what offering will you be satisfied? What kind of food shall I give? Tell me, and I shall provide it.
सूर्य उवाच।। स्थावरं देहि मे सर्वमाहारं ददतां वर। तेन तृप्तो भवेयं वै न तुष्येऽन्येन पार्थिव ।। ३३.
The Sun said: Give me all immovable things as food, O best of givers; by that I would be satisfied—by nothing else, O king.
राजोवाच ।। न शक्यं स्थावरं सर्व्वं तेजसा मानुषेण तु। निर्द्दग्धुं तपतां श्रेष्ठ त्वामेव प्रणमाम्यहम् ।। ३३.
The king said: It is not possible for a human's power to burn all that is immovable; O foremost of the burning ones, I bow to you alone.
आदित्य उवाच।। तुष्टस्तेऽहं शरान् दझि अक्षयान् सर्वतः सुखान्। प्रक्षिप्ताः प्रज्वलिष्यन्ति मम तेजःसमन्विताः ।। ३३.
The Sun said: I am pleased with you; shoot arrows—unfailing and delightful in every way. When released, they will blaze, endowed with my energy.
आदिष्टं तेजसा मेघसागरं शोषयिष्यति। शुष्कं भस्म करिष्यामि तेन प्रीतो नराधिप ।। ३३.
By my command, your energy will dry up the ocean of clouds; I shall make it dry and turn it to ashes—thus am I pleased with you, O king.
ततः शरानथादित्यस्त्वर्जुनाय प्रयच्छति। ततः संप्राप्य सुमहत्स्थावरं सर्व्वमेव हि ।। ३३.
Then the Sun gave arrows to Arjuna; having received them, he indeed destroyed all that was immovable.
आश्रमानथ ग्रामांश्च घोषांश्च नगराणि च। तपोवनानि रम्याणि वनान्युपवनानि च ।। ३३.
Then hermitages, villages, cowherd settlements, cities, delightful sacred groves, forests, and gardens were all burned.
एवं प्राचीनमदहत्ततः सूर्य्यप्रदक्षिणम्। निर्वृक्षा निस्तृणा भूमिर्दग्धा सूर्येण तेजसा ।। ३३.
Thus, beginning in the east and circling the Sun, the earth was burned by the Sun's energy—left without trees or grass.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु अपो निलयमाश्रितः। दशवर्षसहस्राणि जलवासा महानृषिः ।। ३३.
At that very time, a great sage, dwelling in water for ten thousand years, had taken refuge in the waters.
पूर्णे व्रते महातेजा उदतिष्ठत्तपोधनः। सोऽपश्यदाश्रमं दग्धमर्जुनेन महानृषिः। क्रोधाच्छशाप राजर्षिं कीर्त्तितं वो यथा मया ।। ३३.
When his vow was complete, the great ascetic, radiant with austerity, rose up; he saw his hermitage burned by Arjuna, and, in anger, cursed the royal sage, as I have recounted to you.
सूत उवाच।। क्रोष्टोः श्रृणुत राजर्षेर्वंशमुत्तमपूरुषम्। यस्यान्ववाये संभूतो वृष्णिर्वृष्णिकुलोद्वहः ।। ३३.
Sūta said: Hear of the noble lineage of the royal sage, descended from Kroṣṭṛ, from whose line Vṛṣṇi, the foremost of the Vṛṣṇi clan, was born.
क्रोष्टोरेकोऽभवत् पुत्रो वृजिनीवान् महायशाः। वार्जिनीवतमिच्छन्ति स्वाहिं स्वाहोवतां वरम् ।। ३३.
Kroṣṭṛ had a son, Vṛjinīvat, of great fame; those who desire the best among the Svāhi and Svāhova lineages seek Vārjinīvat.
स्वाहेः पुत्रोऽभवद्राजा रशादुर्ददतां वरः। घृतम्प्रसूतमिच्छन्ति रशादोरग्र्यमात्मजम् ।। ३३.
From Svāhā was born a son, the king Raśādu, best of givers; those who desire the foremost son of Raśādu, born of clarified butter, seek him.
महाक्रतुभिरीजे स विविधैराप्तदक्षिणैः। चित्रैश्चित्ररथस्तस्य पुत्र कर्म्मभिरन्वितः ।। ३३.
He was consecrated with great sacrifices, various and generously endowed with gifts; his son Citraratha was distinguished by remarkable deeds.
एवं चित्ररथो वीरो यज्ञान् विपुलदक्षिणान्। शशबिन्दुः परं वृत्तो राजर्षीणामनुष्ठितः ।। ३३.
Thus Citraratha, the valiant one, performed sacrifices with abundant offerings; Śaśabindu was renowned among royal sages for his conduct.
चक्रवर्त्ती महासत्त्वो महावीर्यो बहुप्रजः। तत्रानुवंशश्लोकोऽयं यस्मिन् गीतः पुराविदैः ।। ३३.
A universal monarch, possessing great strength, valor, and many offspring; concerning him, this ancestral verse was sung by the sages of old.
शशबिन्दोस्तु पुत्राणां शतानामभवच्छतम्। धीमतामनुरूपाणां भूरिद्रविणतेजसाम् ।। ३३.
Śaśabindu had a hundred sons, all wise, fittingly endowed with abundant wealth and brilliance.
तेषां षट् च प्रधानास्तु पृथुषाट्का महाबलाः। पृथुश्रवा पृथुयशाः पृथुधर्म्मा पृथुञ्जयः ।। ३३.
Among them, six were foremost, mighty and powerful: Pṛthuṣāṭka, Pṛthuśravā, Pṛthuyaśā, Pṛthudharma, Pṛthuñjaya.
पृथुकीर्त्तिः पृथुन्दाता राजानः शाशिबिन्दवाः। शंसन्ति च पुराणानि पार्थश्रवसमन्तरम्। अन्तरः स पुरा यस्तु यज्ञस्य तनयोऽभवत् ।। ३३.
Pṛthukīrtti and Pṛthundāta were also kings among the Śaśibindus; the ancient texts recount, apart from Pārthaśravas, that Antara was the son born of the sacrifice.
उशना सुतधर्म्मात्मा अवाप्य पृथिवीमिमाम्। आजहाराश्वमेधानां शतमुत्तमधार्म्मिकः ।। ३३.
Uśanā, whose nature was righteous, having obtained this earth, performed a hundred horse sacrifices, most excellent and virtuous.
मरुत्तस्तस्य तनयो राजर्षीणामनुष्ठितः। वीरः कम्बलबर्हिस्तु मरुत्ततनयः स्मृतः ।। ३३.
Marutta was his son, renowned among royal sages; the heroic Kambalabarhi was remembered as Marutta's son.
