Vayu Purana

चकार क्षोभयन्राजा दोःसहस्रेण सागरम्। देवासुरपरिक्षिप्तं क्षीरोदमिव सागरम् ।। ३२.

The king, with his thousand arms, churned the ocean, as if it were the milk ocean surrounded by gods and demons.

मन्दरक्षोभणकृता ह्यमृतोदकशङ्कि ताः। सहसोत्पादिता भीता भीमं दृष्ट्वा नृपोत्तमम् ।। ३२.

Frightened, thinking the nectar-ocean was being churned by Mandara, they suddenly rose up, seeing the mighty king.

नतनिश्चलमूर्द्धानो बभूवुश्च महोरगाः। सायाह्ने कदलीषण्डा निर्वातस्तिमिता इव ।। ३२.

The great serpents became bowed and motionless, like banana groves in the evening, still and windless.

स वै बद्ध्वा धनुर्यान उत्सिक्तः पञ्चभिः शतैः। लङ्कायां मोहयित्वा तु सबलं रावणं बलात्। निर्जित्य बद्ध्वा चानीय माहिष्मत्यां बबन्ध तम् ।। ३२.

He, mounting his chariot and stringing his bow with five hundred arrows, bewildered Rāvaṇa and his army in Laṅkā, defeated and bound him, and brought him captive to Māhiṣmatī.

ततो गत्वा पुलस्त्यस्तु अर्जुनं च प्रसादयत्। मुमोच राजा पौलस्त्यं पुलस्त्येनानुपालितम् ।। ३२.

Then Pulastya went and appeased Arjuna; the king released the Paulastya, Rāvaṇa, at Pulastya's request.

तस्य बाहुसहस्रस्य बभूव ज्यातलस्वनः। युगान्तेऽम्बुदवृक्षस्य स्फुटितस्याशनेरिव ।। ३२.

The twang of his thousand arms resounded like the cracking of a great cloud-tree struck by lightning at the end of an age.

अहो मृधे महावीर्यं भार्गवो यस्य सोऽच्छिनत्। मृधे सहस्रं बाहूनां हेमतालवनं यथा ।। ३२.

Ah, what immense might in battle, whose thousand arms Bhārgava severed in combat, as if cutting a grove of golden palm trees.

तृषितेन कदाचित्स भिक्षितश्चित्रभानुना। सप्त द्वीपांश्चित्रभानोः प्रादाद्भिक्षां विशाम्पतिः ।। ३२.

Once, when he was thirsty, Citrabhānu begged him, and the lord of men gave Citrabhānu alms—the seven islands.

पुराणि घोषान् ग्रामांश्च पत्तनानि च सर्व्वशः ३२.

He gave away ancient settlements, villages, and cities entirely.

स तस्य पुरुषेन्द्रस्य प्रभावेण महायशाः। ददाह कार्तवीर्यस्य शैलांश्चापि वनानि च ।। ३२.

By the power of that lord of men, the illustrious one burned the mountains and forests of Kārtavīrya.

स शून्यमाश्रमं सर्वं वरुणस्यात्मजस्य वै। ददोह सवनद्वीपांश्चित्रभानुः सहैहयः ।। ३२.

Citrabhānu, together with the Haihayas, drained all the deserted hermitage and the islands of Varuṇa’s son.

संलेभे वरुणः पुत्रं पुरा भास्विनमुत्तमम्। वसिष्ठनामा स मुनिः ख्यातश्चापः श्रितः श्रुतः ।। ३२.

Long ago, Varuṇa had a distinguished son, a sage named Vasiṣṭha, renowned and devoted to the waters.

तत्रापदस्तदा क्रोधादर्जुनं शप्तवान्विभुः। यस्मान्न वर्जितमिदं वनं ते मम हैहय ।। ३२.

Then, in anger and distress, the mighty one cursed Arjuna, saying, 'Because you did not spare this forest of mine, O Haihaya—'

तस्मात् ते दुष्करं कर्म्म कृतमन्यो हनिष्यति। अर्जुनो नाम कौन्तेयो न च राजा भविष्यति ।। ३२.

'Therefore, for this difficult deed you have done, another will slay you. Arjuna, son of Kunti, will not be king.'

अर्जुन त्वां महावीर्यो रामः प्रहरतां वरः। छित्त्वा बाहुसहस्रं वै प्रमथ्य तरसा बलीं ।। ३२.

Arjuna, Rama of great might, foremost among warriors, will cut off your thousand arms, subduing you with force.

तपस्वी ब्राह्मणश्चैव वधिष्यति महाबलः। तस्य रामस्तदा ह्यासीन्मृत्युशापेन धीमतः ।। ३२.

A powerful ascetic brāhmaṇa will slay you; for him, Rama became the agent of death by the curse of that wise one.

राज्ञा तेन वरश्चैव स्वयमेव वृतः पुरा। तस्य पुत्रशतं ह्यासीत् पञ्च तत्र महारथाः ।। ३२.

That king had formerly chosen a boon for himself; he had a hundred sons, among whom five were great chariot-warriors.

कृतास्त्रा बलिनः शूरा धर्म्मात्मानो यशस्वनः । शूरश्च शूरसेनश्च वृष्ट्याद्यं वृष एव च ।। ३२.

Skilled in arms, strong, valiant, righteous, and renowned: Śūra, Śūrasena, Vṛṣṭi, Vṛṣa, and Jayadhvaja were his sons.

जयध्वजश्च वै पुत्रा अवन्तिषु विशांपतेः। जयध्वजस्य पुत्रस्तु तालजङ्घः प्रतापवान् ।। ३२.

Jayadhvaja, son of the lord of Avanti, had a son named Tālavaṅgha, famed for his prowess.

तस्य पुत्रशतं ह्येव तालजङ्घा इति श्रुतम्। तेषां पञ्च गणाः ख्याता हैहयानां महात्मनाम् ।। ३२.

He too had a hundred sons, known as the Tālavaṅghas; among the great Haihayas, five clans became renowned.

वीरहोत्रा ह्यसङ्ख्याता भोजाश्चावर्तयस्तथा। तुण्डिकेराश्च विक्रान्तास्तालजङ्घास्तथैव च ।। ३२.

The Vīrahotras, countless in number, the Bhojas, Avartas, the valiant Tuṇḍikeras, and likewise the Tālavaṅghas.

वीरहोत्रसुतश्चापि अनन्तो नाम पार्थिवः। दुर्जयस्तस्य पुत्रस्तु बभूवामित्रदर्शनः ।। ३२.

Vīrahotra’s son was a king named Ananta; his son was Durjaya, formidable and a terror to his foes.

अनष्टद्रव्यता चैव तस्य राज्ञो बभूव ह। प्रभावेण महाराजः प्रजास्ताः पर्य्यपालयत् ।। ३२.

That king possessed inexhaustible wealth; by his power, the great king protected his subjects.

न तस्य वित्तनाशश्च नष्टं प्रतिलभेत सः। कार्तवीर्यस्य यो जन्म कथयेदिह धीमतः ।। ३२.

He who recounts here the birth of the wise Kārtavīrya will not suffer loss of wealth, and whatever is lost, he shall regain.

वित्तवान् भवत्यत्रैव धर्म्मश्चास्य विवर्द्धते। यथा त्वष्टा यथा दाता तथा स्वर्गे महीयते ।। ३२.

In this very world, he becomes wealthy and his righteousness increases; just as Tvaṣṭṛ and Dātā, so too is he honored in heaven.

ऋषय ऊचुः।। किमर्थं भुवनं दग्धमपवस्यं महात्मनाम्। कार्तवीर्येण विक्रम्य तन्नः प्रब्रूहि पृच्छताम् ।। ३३.

The sages said: For what reason was the world, the abode of the great souls, burned by Kārtavīrya's might? Tell us, for we ask.

रक्षिता स तु राजर्षिः प्रजानामिति नः श्रुतम्। कथं स रक्षिता भूत्वानाशयत्तत्तपोवनम् ।। ३३.

We have heard that this royal sage was the protector of the people; how did he, being a protector, destroy that sacred grove?

सूत उवाच।। आदित्यो विप्ररूपेण कार्तवीर्यमुपस्थितः। तृप्तिकामः प्रयच्छान्नमादित्योऽहं न संशयः ।। ३३.

Sūta said: The Sun, taking the form of a Brāhmaṇa, approached Kārtavīrya, desiring satisfaction, and asked for food, saying, 'I am the Sun, without doubt.'

राजोवाच।। भगवन् केन ते तुष्टिर्भवेद्ब्रूहि दिवाकर। कीदृशं भोजनं दझि श्रुत्वा च विदधाम्यहम् ।। ३३.

The king said: O blessed one, tell me, O Sun, by what offering will you be satisfied? What kind of food shall I give? Tell me, and I shall provide it.
