Vayu Purana

अधर्म्मे दीयमानस्य सद्भिस्तस्मान्निवारणम्। धर्म्मेण पृथिवीञ्जित्वा धर्म्मेणैवानुपालनम् ।। ३२.

He asked that he be restrained by the virtuous when acting unrighteously, that he conquer the earth by righteousness, and that he rule it by righteousness alone.

संग्रामांस्तु बहून् जित्त्वा हत्वा चारीन् सहस्रशः। संग्रामे युद्धयमानस्य वधः स्यादधिकाद्रणे ।। ३२.

Having conquered many battles and slain thousands of enemies, he wished that, if he should fall in battle, it would be only in a great war.

तेनेयं पृथिवी कृत्स्ना सप्तद्वीपा सपत्तना । सप्तोदधिपरिक्षिप्ता क्षात्रेण विधिना जनाः ।। ३२.

By him, this entire earth with its seven islands and cities, encircled by the seven oceans, was governed according to the Kshatriya law.

तस्य बाहुसहस्रन्तु युद्ध्यतः किल धीमतः। यौद्धो ध्वजो रथश्चैव प्रादुर्भवति मायया ।। ३२.

For him, as he fought with his thousand arms, a battle-standard and a chariot would manifest by his power.

दशयज्ञसहस्राणि तेषु द्वीपेषु सप्तसु। निरर्गलाः स्म निर्वृत्ताः श्रूयन्ते तस्य धीमतः ।। ३२.

In those seven islands, ten thousand uninterrupted sacrifices were performed by that wise one, as is heard.

सर्वे यज्ञा महाबाहोस्तस्यासन् भूरितेजसः। सर्वे काञ्चनवेदीकाः सर्वे यूपैश्च काञ्चनैः ।। ३२.

All the sacrifices of that mighty-armed, greatly radiant one were with golden altars and all with golden sacrificial posts.

सर्वे देवैर्म्माहाभागैर्विमानस्थैरलंकृताः। गन्धर्व्वैरप्सरोभिश्च नित्यमेवोपशोभिताः ।। ३२.

All were adorned by the blessed gods dwelling in their aerial chariots, and always graced by Gandharvas and Apsaras.

तस्य राज्ञो जगौ गाथां गन्धर्वो नारदस्तथा। चरितं तस्य राजर्षेर्महिमानं निरीक्ष्य च ।। ३२.

Then the Gandharva Nārada sang a song about that king, having observed the deeds and greatness of that royal sage.

न नूनं कार्त्तवीर्यस्य गतिं यास्यन्ति मानवाः। यज्ञैर्दानैस्तपोभिश्च विक्रमेण श्रुतेन च ।। ३२.

Surely, no humans will attain the path of Kārtavīrya—whether by sacrifices, gifts, austerities, valor, or learning.

द्वीपेषु सप्तसु स वै खड्गी वरशरासनी। रथी राजाप्यनुचरोऽन्योऽगाच्चैवानुदृश्यते ।। ३२.

On the seven islands, he alone, armed with sword and excellent bow, riding in a chariot, was the king; no other attendant is seen there.

अनष्टद्रव्यश्चैवासीन्न शोको न च विभ्रमः। प्रभावेण महाराज्ञः प्रजा धर्म्मेण रक्षतः ।। ३२.

There was no loss of property, no sorrow, nor confusion, due to the power of the great king who protected his subjects with righteousness.

पञ्चाशीतिसहस्राणि वर्षाणां स नराधिपः। सप्त सप्त वारान् सम्राट् चक्रवर्त्ती बभूव ह ।। ३२.

That lord of men, the universal emperor, ruled for eighty-five thousand years, reigning seven times seven cycles.

स एव पशुपालोऽभूत् क्षेत्रपालस्तथैव च। स एव वृष्ट्या पर्जन्यो योगित्वादर्ज्जुनोऽभवत् ।। ३२.

He himself became the protector of cattle and also the guardian of the fields; by his yoga, he became Parjanya, the bringer of rain, and Arjuna.

स वै बाहुसहस्रेण ज्याघातकठिनेन च । भाति रश्मिसहस्रेण शारदेनेव भास्करः ।। ३२.

With his thousand arms, hardened by the bowstring, he shone with a thousand rays, like the autumn sun.

स हि नागसहस्रेण माहिष्मत्यां नराधिपः। कर्कोटकसभाञ्जित्वा पुरीं तत्र न्यवेशयत् ।। ३२.

That king, with a thousand elephants, conquered the assembly of Karkoṭaka in Māhiṣmatī and established his city there.

स वै वेगे समुद्रस्य प्रावृट्कालाम्बुजेक्षणः । क्रीडन्निव सुखोद्विग्नः प्रावृट्कालञ्चकार ह ।। ३२.

With the speed of the ocean in the rainy season, his eyes like lotuses, he played joyfully, bringing the monsoon season.

लुलिता क्रीडता तेन हेमस्रग्दाममालिनी। ऊर्म्मिभ्रूकुटिसन्नादा शङ्किताभ्येति नर्मदा ।। ३२.

By his playful stirring, the Narmadā, adorned with garlands of golden flowers, approaches in fear, her waves frowning and roaring.

पुरा स तामनुसरन्नवगाढो महार्णवम्। चकारोद्धृत्त्य वेलान्तं स कालः प्रावृणोद्वनम् ।। ३२.

Once, pursuing her, he plunged into the great ocean, and, having reached the shore, he brought the rainy season to the forest.

तस्य बाहु सहस्रेण क्षोभ्यमाणे महादधौ। भवन्ति लीना निश्चेष्टाः पातालस्था महासुराः ।। ३२.

When the great ocean was agitated by his thousand arms, the mighty demons dwelling in the underworld became submerged and motionless.

चूर्णीकृतमहावीचिलीनमीनमहाविषाः। पतिता विद्धफेनौघमावर्त्तक्षिप्तदुस्सहम् ।। ३२.

The great poisonous beings and fish, crushed by the mighty waves, fell down, tossed by the whirlpools and the mass of foam.

चकार क्षोभयन्राजा दोःसहस्रेण सागरम्। देवासुरपरिक्षिप्तं क्षीरोदमिव सागरम् ।। ३२.

The king, with his thousand arms, churned the ocean, as if it were the milk ocean surrounded by gods and demons.

मन्दरक्षोभणकृता ह्यमृतोदकशङ्कि ताः। सहसोत्पादिता भीता भीमं दृष्ट्वा नृपोत्तमम् ।। ३२.

Frightened, thinking the nectar-ocean was being churned by Mandara, they suddenly rose up, seeing the mighty king.

नतनिश्चलमूर्द्धानो बभूवुश्च महोरगाः। सायाह्ने कदलीषण्डा निर्वातस्तिमिता इव ।। ३२.

The great serpents became bowed and motionless, like banana groves in the evening, still and windless.

स वै बद्ध्वा धनुर्यान उत्सिक्तः पञ्चभिः शतैः। लङ्कायां मोहयित्वा तु सबलं रावणं बलात्। निर्जित्य बद्ध्वा चानीय माहिष्मत्यां बबन्ध तम् ।। ३२.

He, mounting his chariot and stringing his bow with five hundred arrows, bewildered Rāvaṇa and his army in Laṅkā, defeated and bound him, and brought him captive to Māhiṣmatī.

ततो गत्वा पुलस्त्यस्तु अर्जुनं च प्रसादयत्। मुमोच राजा पौलस्त्यं पुलस्त्येनानुपालितम् ।। ३२.

Then Pulastya went and appeased Arjuna; the king released the Paulastya, Rāvaṇa, at Pulastya's request.

तस्य बाहुसहस्रस्य बभूव ज्यातलस्वनः। युगान्तेऽम्बुदवृक्षस्य स्फुटितस्याशनेरिव ।। ३२.

The twang of his thousand arms resounded like the cracking of a great cloud-tree struck by lightning at the end of an age.

अहो मृधे महावीर्यं भार्गवो यस्य सोऽच्छिनत्। मृधे सहस्रं बाहूनां हेमतालवनं यथा ।। ३२.

Ah, what immense might in battle, whose thousand arms Bhārgava severed in combat, as if cutting a grove of golden palm trees.

तृषितेन कदाचित्स भिक्षितश्चित्रभानुना। सप्त द्वीपांश्चित्रभानोः प्रादाद्भिक्षां विशाम्पतिः ।। ३२.

Once, when he was thirsty, Citrabhānu begged him, and the lord of men gave Citrabhānu alms—the seven islands.

पुराणि घोषान् ग्रामांश्च पत्तनानि च सर्व्वशः ३२.

He gave away ancient settlements, villages, and cities entirely.
