Desire is never quenched by enjoyment of objects; like a fire fed with offerings, it only grows all the more.
Whatever rice and barley, gold, cattle, and women there are on earth—all that is not enough for one man; seeing this, one does not become deluded.
When one kindles the fire of purity in all beings—by action, mind, and speech—then one attains Brahman.
When one does not fear others, and others do not fear him; when one neither desires nor hates—then one attains Brahman.
That craving which is hard to abandon by those of distorted mind, which does not wither even as the body withers, that passion, whose end is ruin—happiness comes to the one who abandons that thirst.
The treasuries of the aging man decay, his teeth decay as he ages; but the hope for life and wealth, even as he ages, does not decay.
Whatever happiness in the world is without desire, and whatever great divine happiness there is—the happiness of freedom from craving does not equal even a sixteenth part of it.
Having spoken thus, that royal sage, with his wife, set out for the forest; performing austerities at Bhṛgu’s peak, that illustrious one, having observed a hundred vows, attained heaven there itself.
His five lineages, virtuous and honored by divine sages, by whom the entire earth was pervaded, just as by the rays of the sun.
Blessed, prosperous, long-lived, and renowned becomes the man, especially the best of twice-born, who reads or hears the entire story of Yayāti.
I shall now recount the lineage of Yadu, the most illustrious and supremely powerful; listen as I narrate it in detail and in order.
Yadu had five sons, comparable to the sons of the gods: Sahasrajit, the foremost; then Kroshtu, Nila, Jita, and Laghu.
Sahasrajit had a son, the illustrious king named Shatajit; Shatajit had three sons, renowned and supremely righteous.
They were Haihaya, Haya, and the king Venuhaya; Haihaya's heir is known as Dharmatatva, according to tradition.
Dharmatantra is the son of Kirtis, and is to be known as such; Samjneya was the son of Samjneya, whose heir was the king named Mahishman.
Mahishman had a son, the valiant Bhadrasrenya, who was the king of Varanasi, as has been told before.
Bhadrasrenya's heir was the king named Durmada; from Durmada came the wise and famed Kanka.
Kanka had four sons, renowned throughout the world: Kritavirya, Kartavirya, Kritavarma, and likewise Krita.
Krita was born as the fourth; from Kritavirya came Arjuna, the king who was born with a thousand arms and ruled over the seven islands.
Kartavirya performed severe austerities for ten thousand years and, having pleased Dattatreya, who was born of Atri, worshipped him.
To him, Dattatreya, of great brilliance, granted four boons; first, he chose as his boon to have a thousand arms.
He asked that he be restrained by the virtuous when acting unrighteously, that he conquer the earth by righteousness, and that he rule it by righteousness alone.
Having conquered many battles and slain thousands of enemies, he wished that, if he should fall in battle, it would be only in a great war.
By him, this entire earth with its seven islands and cities, encircled by the seven oceans, was governed according to the Kshatriya law.
For him, as he fought with his thousand arms, a battle-standard and a chariot would manifest by his power.
In those seven islands, ten thousand uninterrupted sacrifices were performed by that wise one, as is heard.
All the sacrifices of that mighty-armed, greatly radiant one were with golden altars and all with golden sacrificial posts.
All were adorned by the blessed gods dwelling in their aerial chariots, and always graced by Gandharvas and Apsaras.
Then the Gandharva Nārada sang a song about that king, having observed the deeds and greatness of that royal sage.
Surely, no humans will attain the path of Kārtavīrya—whether by sacrifices, gifts, austerities, valor, or learning.
