The demons said: Prahlāda is our Indra; for his sake we seek victory. At this time, O king, remain on our side, not with Aditi’s son.
He replied, 'So be it,' and was urged by the gods as well; the gods also invited him, saying, 'You will become Indra after victory.'
He struck down all the demons before the wielder of the thunderbolt; he, the master of fortune, restored the supreme splendor lost by the gods.
Having slain all the demons, the mighty Rajī spoke; then, there, Indra together with the gods addressed Rajī.
Declaring, 'I am Rajī’s son,' he spoke again: 'You are Indra, king of the gods, without doubt; since I am your son, O slayer of foes, I will attain fame.'
But hearing these words of Indra, he was deceived by that illusion; the king, pleased, replied to Indra, 'So be it.'
When that king, equal to the gods, ascended to heaven, the sons of Rajī took from Indra his share of the inheritance and his position.
Those hundreds of sons, and the seat of Śacī’s lord, entered in many ways the heavenly world, the realm of the gods.
Then, after a long time had passed, the mighty Indra, deprived of his kingdom and share, spoke to Bṛhaspati.
Prepare for me an offering the size of a jujube fruit, O Brahmarṣi, so that, nourished by its energy, I may endure.
O Brahman, I am emaciated, dispirited, deprived of my kingdom and food, my strength destroyed, weak and bewildered by Rajī’s sons; be gracious to me.
Bṛhaspati said: If, O Śakra, you had asked me thus before, for your sake I would not have done what should not be done, O sinless one.
O Indra, illustrious one, I will go for the sake of that benefit, so that you may soon regain your share and kingdom.
Thus, O Śakra, I shall go; let your mind not be troubled. Then he performed for him a great act to increase his power.
And the best among the wise caused confusion in their understanding, when those sons, deluded and unrighteous due to passion, arose.
They became haters of Brahman, deprived of strength and valor; then he obtained the lordship of the gods, the excellent station of Indra.
Having slain all the sons of the king, devoted to desire and anger, whoever hears this pure account of the station and establishment of Śatakratu, or of the king, does not encounter misfortune.
How was the maiden given by the great-souled Marut to the king, and what valor did the noble sons born from Marut's daughter possess?
Desiring food, the lord of people, month after month for sixty years, offered to Marutsoma, the mighty one.
By that, the Maruts were pleased with him through Marutsoma, and, delighted, they gave him inexhaustible food and all desired enjoyments.
The food cooked once for him in a day and night does not diminish, even if given away by the millions from sunrise onward.
From the union of Mitrājyoti, the maiden, and the wise Marut, were born those of great strength, knowers of dharma, and seers of liberation.
Having renounced household duties, they became established in detachment; attaining the discipline of ascetics here, they reached the state of Brahman.
From them was born Anapāya, who was then a giver of dharma; from him arose the kṣatriya duty, and from that, Pratipakṣa, the great ascetic.
And Pratipakṣa's son was the renowned Sañjaya; Sañjaya's son was Jaya, and from him was born Vijaya.
Vijaya's son was Jaya, and his son was known as Haryandva; from Haryandva came the king Sahadeva, possessed of great prowess.
Sahadeva's righteous son was the famed Adīna; Adīna's son was Jayasena, and his son was Saṃkṛti.
Saṃkṛti's son was also righteous, Kṛtadharma, of great fame; thus, these are the kṣatriya lineages of Nahuṣa—know them.
Nahuṣa had six heirs, equal in splendor to Indra, born of the noble Virajā, daughter of his father.
They were Yati, Yayāti, Saṃyāti, Āyāti, and two named Tudvaya; among them, Yati was the eldest, and Yayāti was next.
