Having spoken thus to his wife, Ṛcīka, descendant of Bhṛgu, devoted to austerity, entered the forest, ever engaged in penance.
At that time, Gādhi, together with his wife, approached Ṛcīka's hermitage, O king, on the pretext of a pilgrimage, to see his daughter.
Satyavatī, always faithful to her husband, took both portions prepared by the sage, and joyfully, without distraction, reported them to her mother.
Her mother, by fate, gave her own portion to her daughter; and Satyavatī, out of ignorance, prepared her own portion for herself.
Then Satyavatī bore a pregnancy, auspicious yet destined to destroy Kshatriyas, with a radiant form and a terrifying appearance.
Ṛcīka, seeing this and discerning by yogic insight, then addressed his wife, the beautiful one, O best of twice-born.
O gentle one, your mother will succeed, due to the exchange of portions; your son will be born, fierce in deeds and exceedingly cruel.
Your mother will bear such a son, rich in austerity; for I have dedicated the entire Brahman, through my penance, to that.
Thus addressed by her husband, Satyavatī, the illustrious one, sought to appease him: 'Let my son not be like this; let another be an outcast among Brahmins,' she said, and the sage replied.
O gentle one, neither I nor you have desired this; your son will be fierce in action, due to both his father and mother.
Again, Satyavatī, thus addressed, spoke: 'O sage, you could create worlds if you wished—why not a son?'
O husband, you ought to grant me a son who is peaceful and upright; let such a son be mine, if you so wish, O lord.
O best of twice-born, it cannot be done otherwise in my case; then, by the power of her austerity, he granted her favor.
I make no distinction between son and grandson, O beautiful one; as you have spoken, so it shall be, O gentle lady.
Therefore, Satyavatī gave birth to a son of the Bhārgava lineage, devoted to austerity and self-restraint—Jamadagni, peaceful in nature.
Due to the ancient exchange of portions between Bhṛgu's fiery and Vaiṣṇava offerings, Jamadagni was born from the Vaiṣṇava fire.
Gādhi, the son of Kuśika, having obtained Viśvāmitra as his heir, went, together with the Brahmarṣis and surrounded by Brahmins, to Savitṛ.
That Satyavatī, virtuous and devoted to truth, became known as Kauśikī, and this great river began to flow.
The illustrious Kauśikī, best of rivers, became renowned; and in the Ikṣvāku lineage there was a king named Suveṇu.
His blessed daughter, named Reṇukā, was called Kāmalī; from Kāmalī and Reṇu, endowed with austerity and steadfastness, Jamadagni, fierce and powerful, was born to Ṛcīka.
He (Jamadagni) begot Rāma, the destroyer of Kṣatriyas, who was supreme in all branches of knowledge, accomplished in the science of archery, and blazing like fire.
Thus, from Aurva and Ṛcīka, in Satyavatī, the great-minded Jamadagni was born, foremost among knowers of Brahman, by his power; and his middle son was Śunaḥśepha, and the youngest was Śunaḥpuccha.
Viśvāmitra, righteous in soul and known as Viśvaratha, was born by the grace of Bhṛgu, increasing the lineage of Kauśika.
Śunaḥśepha, the sage, became the son of Viśvāmitra; in the sacrifice of Hariścandra, he was bound as a sacrificial victim, but was given by the gods, and thus became known as Devarāta.
Among the sons of Viśvāmitra, Śunaḥśepha is remembered as the eldest; Madhucchanda, Naya, Kṛtadeva, and Dhruvāṣṭaka are also named.
Kacchapa and Pūraṇa are also sons of Viśvāmitra; their lineages, of the great-souled Kauśikas, are many and various.
The Pārthivas, Devarātas, Yājñavalkyas, Samarṣaṇas, Udumbaras, Udumlānas, Tārakas, and Yamamuñcatas are also mentioned.
The Lohinyas, Reṇavas, and likewise the Kārīṣavas are remembered; also the Babhravas, Pāṇinas, and those who meditate and recite.
From Śālāvatī came the Hiraṇyākṣas, Syaṅkṛtas, and the Gālavās; also the Devalas, Yāmadūtas, Śālaṅkāyanas, and Bāṣkalas.
Dadāti, Bādaras, and others are also descendants of the wise Viśvāmitra; many other lineages, called Śauśikas, arose from different sages.
