The son of Brihaspati, Bharadvaja, of great austerity; Autathya, Gautama, the learned one, and Sharadvana, righteous by name.
Svayambhuva, the venerable Atri, Brahmaka is the fifth; the sixth is Vasuman, son of Vasishtha, renowned in the worlds.
Vatsara and Kashyapa—these seven are esteemed as virtuous; these seven accomplished sages exist in the present interval.
Ikshvaku, Nabhaga, Dhrishta, and also Sharyati; Narisyanta, famed, Nabha, and Uddishta as well.
Karusha and Prishadhra, and Vasuman is remembered as the ninth; these are declared as the nine sons of Manu Vaivasvata. Indeed, I have recounted these, and this is the seventh interval.
Thus, I have narrated the second section, O twice-born, in detail and in order; what more shall I now describe?
Having heard the second section recited by the wise Suta, then Shaunaka inquired about the third section.
The second section has been recited by you in sequence; now recount in detail the third section, along with its upodvata. Thus addressed, Suta spoke with inner delight.
I shall recount the third section, along with its upodvata, in full detail; O Brahmins, listen as I speak of the origin.
Hear in detail and in order, O twice-born, of the origin of the present great-souled Manu Vaivasvata.
Previously, it has been enumerated as seventy-one sets of four yugas, together with hosts of gods, sages, and also with the Danavas.
With the Pitris, Gandharvas, Yakshas, and also with the hosts of Rakshasas and Bhutas; with humans, animals, birds, and immobile beings as well.
From the beginning of Manu to the end of the future, with many extensive accounts, I shall declare the creation of Vaivasvata, having bowed to Vivasvat.
In the first Manvantara, the past creations and those that began; in the interval of Svayambhuva, the seven great sages who existed before; and in the interval of Chakshusha that has passed, and again at the coming of Vaivasvata.
Because of the curse of Maheshvara upon Daksha and the sages, upon Bhrigu and others of great energy, there was the manifestation of these great souls.
Again, those seven sages were born, the seven mind-born ones, appointed as sons by Svayambhuva himself.
By those great souls, creators of progeny, as they were born, creation was again set in motion, as before and in due order.
I shall declare their progeny, of pure knowledge and action, both in summary and in detail, properly and in sequence.
This world, with all its moving and unmoving beings, was again filled by those born from their lineage, and creation was adorned with planets and constellations.
Hearing these words, the sages became doubtful; then, filled with uncertainty, those sages of steadfast vows respectfully questioned Sūta, the one who resolves doubts.
How were the seven ancient seers and the seven mind-born sons previously created and considered as sons? Tell us this, O noble one. Then the illustrious Sūta, knower of the Purāṇas, spoke auspicious words.
How did the seven perfected seers, who existed in the Svāyambhuva Manvantara, reach the Vaivasvata Manvantara again?
Due to the curse of Bhava, they were struck and did not attain ascetic practice at that time; yet, being once-returners, they appeared among people in the world.
Then all the great sages in the world spoke among themselves, and those illustrious ones spoke likewise at the great sacrifice of Varuṇa.
We shall all be born in the Cākṣuṣa Manvantara as sons of the Grandfather; from this, greater good will arise.
In the Svāyambhuva Manvantara, they were cursed by Bhava for the sake of seven; then, being born again, they went from the world of men to heaven.
In the great sacrifice of the god, as he assumed the form of Vāruṇī and Brahmā offered the pure essence into the fire desiring progeny, the seers were first born—this is what we have heard as the second creation.
Bhṛgu, Aṅgirā, Marīci, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Atri, and also Vasiṣṭha—these eight were sons of Brahmā.
Thus, at his extended sacrifice, all the gods assembled, along with all the limbs of the sacrifice and the embodied Vaṣaṭkāra.
There, thousands of Sāman hymns and Yajus formulas appeared in embodied form, and the Ṛgveda arose, adorned with the sequence of words.
