Having obtained the concluding bath, untroubled and worshipped by all the gods and sages, the supreme king of kings shone forth, ruling over the ten directions.
Then, having attained that sovereignty, difficult to obtain and praised by the sages, O Brahmins, his mind became unsteady and discipline was destroyed in him.
Though requested by the gods and likewise by the divine sages, he did not return Tārā to Aṅgiras at that time.
Uśanas seized her from Aṅgiras, O Brahmins, for he, of great brilliance, was formerly the disciple of Bṛhaspati, his father.
Because of that affection, the blessed Rudra became the supporter of Bṛhaspati, seizing his heel and taking up his bow.
By that great soul, the foremost among Brahmarshis, the supreme weapon was directed at the gods, by which their fame was destroyed.
There, a great battle took place, visible to the desire of Tārakā, between the gods and the Dānavas, causing destruction of the worlds.
There, the three remaining gods and those called Tuṣitas sought refuge in Brahmā, the primeval god and grandfather.
Then, restraining Uśanas and Rudra, the eldest Śaṅkara, the Grandfather himself gave Tārā to Aṅgiras.
Seeing her pregnant, Tārā, the wife of the lord of stars, Bṛhaspati said, 'You must not cast out the embryo.'
'In my body, in my womb, the embryo must be held at all costs.' Yet she did not retain that son, the destroyer of enemies.
Coming to a reed stalk, blazing like fire, the blessed one, as soon as he was born, assumed a form that astonished the gods.
Then, the gods, filled with doubt, questioned Tārā: 'Speak the truth—whose son is this, Soma's or Bṛhaspati's?'
Ashamed before the gods, she did not say whether it was proper or improper; then the son, destroyer of enemies, began to curse her.
Then Brahmā restrained him and said to Tārā, 'O Tārā, tell the truth—whose son is this of yours, Soma's or not?'
With joined palms, she spoke to Brahmā, the gracious lord: 'He is the son of Soma, the great-souled one, the destroyer of enemies.'
Then Soma, the giver and lord of creatures, embraced him; he gave his wise son the name Budha.
In the course of their union, Budha was approached by the royal maiden, who then bore him a son.
His son, Pururavas, possessed great brilliance; from Urvashi, he begot six sons of immense strength.

There, forcibly violated and afflicted by royal disease, Soma, his circle diminished by illness, sought refuge with his father, Atri.
The illustrious Atri performed the expiation for his sin; freed from royal disease, Soma shone forth in all his glory.
This account of Soma's birth has been narrated, O best of twice-born; now listen as his lineage is proclaimed, O foremost of Brahmins.
Blessed, healthy, long-lived, virtuous, and purifying of sin—by hearing the birth of Soma, one is freed from all evils.
Suta said: Budha was the son of Soma, and Pururavas was Budha's son; he was radiant, generous, a sacrificer, and gave abundant gifts.
He was learned in Brahman, courageous, invincible in battle against enemies, and he performed Agnihotra and gave land to sacrificers.

Urvashi, renowned and glorious, chose him—learned in Brahman, self-controlled, righteous, and truthful—setting aside her pride.
